to think DS' school knows something the rest of us don't about Brexit?

This isn't a trip for his year group but they are organising a language trip to an EU country by air, leaving on, guess what, 29 March!

I think they come back on 3rd April or thereabouts.

I am a bit surprised to say the least. Do they have inside information that there will be a deal? They've also got a EU trip planned later in April but that was organised months before all this latest no-deal furore, and another one in July, but I'd probably expect things to have been sorted out (to an extent) by then, although they might have to get visas for the British passport holders at shortish notice.

Leaving on 29th seems like playing chicken to me; the kids (and teachers!) might not be able to get back.

Don’t think it matters a jot if Spanish hotelliers or Dutch farmers ‘need’ us. Surely they need to get the legal gubbins in place to be enable airlines to operate legally regardless of will. If this negotiation is anything like the last 2 years then god help us all. It’s like when you buy a house. You want the house, the sellers want you to have the house but 2 months later you are still waiting for everything to be finalised. You can’t just pretend that there is no law or process and move in and decorate like you are a character on eastenders.

If you want to worry, worry about the election of a hard left Marxist government under Corbyn and your council taxes tripling. You won’t be worrying about school trips because you won’t have the disposable to pay for them.

The UK’s business, insurance and financial sector have already facrored in Brexit and it will be business as usual. However, at the first hint of Corbyn government there will be an instant flight of £trillions of capital and therè will be no inward investment because of his confiscatory policies. The pound will crash and stocks lose value overnight which will mean ordinary people’s pensions will be decimated.

Remember the note New Labour left in the Treasury drawer reading, ‘Good luck, there’s no money left? It will be much, much worse than that. You will not be worrying about school trips as you will not have the cash to pay for them.

Hate the aviation industry, commercial and otherwise, like manufacturing industries have been trying over the last couple of years to get the UK Government to listen to their concerns. It has fallen on deaf ears by and large.

Of course the aviation industry are trying to do things to mitigate what they see as issues wrt Brexit. At the end of the day though they are rule takers and not rule makers and cannot in the event of a no deal Brexit break those rules.

frumpety · 19/10/2018 07:17

Council taxes are rising under the Conservative's, the roll out UC is destined to make over 3 million families poorer in the UK, far higher than the government initially proposed Teacher

Honestly though I don't think Labour want to be in power right now, I mean who on earth would want to grab hold of a stick as shitty as the Brexit one ?

ConfusedMum82 · 19/10/2018 07:38

DDs secondary has a French trip and another EU trip for football, all after March. One costing £150 and one £600.
I told DD I wasn't paying £750 for trips that may not happen, not to mention a passport that may be voided by March.

It's Mainland Europe, not Not North Korea ... It will be ok. ..

UnnecessaryFennel · 19/10/2018 07:57

Why do you think 'it will be ok', haloumi?

What part of the negotiations so far, and the warnings from trade and industry, and the govts own technical notices, make you feel optimistic?

Clavinova · 19/10/2018 07:59

2 million brits holiday in Spain every year

It's not 2 million Brits a year - it's almost 19 million - we contributed £13bn to Spain's economy last year - representing 21% of their tourism revenue. The Spanish and UK governments will be working on a contingency plan (right now) in the event of a no-deal.

surferjet · 19/10/2018 08:09

So we won’t be allowed to fly to Spain anymore. Ok, that’s fantastic.
we’ll be saving the planet, flying is so damaging don’t you know! & we’ll holiday in beautiful Cornwall, Wales, Scotland, & Dorset instead, bringing millions to our economy.
Win win.

We should all fly less. #savetheplanet.

Thomasinaa · 19/10/2018 08:09

Funny how Brexiters think that other governments will do what the UK wants to avoid their economy losing out on UK money. When our government is happily wrecking our economy, despite the entreaties of the business sector. Fuck business, remember?

MyBrexitGoesOnHoliday · 19/10/2018 08:17

Errr.... no one has said that the no flying will last forever.
But that for a weeks days/weeks ?? Planes won’t be able to fly UNTIL an agreement is reached.

Which is why the trip the OP’s school is proposing is crazy. Because it’s right in the middle of that period where it’s likely to be an issue.

In the long term, people will fly and go to Spain. But probably not as many of them (pound been weaker means more expensive hols) and with a visa (as most other 3rd countries).

Thomasinaa · 19/10/2018 08:23

I would be very unhappy with schoolteachers responsible for educating my child being ignorant about something as important as Brexit.

jamatkins that’s exactly the point we were making. I’m not a Brit, I’m in Germany and it’s not like people here are rubbing their hands in glee and sticking two fingers up to the UK. More like “WTF is going on, we don’t want this but what on earth can we do?”

People need to calm down

Helmetbymidnight · 19/10/2018 09:21

How do you mean calm down?

This is a discussion site and a discussion thread and we are discussing the issues.

TheElementsSong · 19/10/2018 09:23

They probably mean "be silent you traitor, every time you type something negative about Brexit, a unicorn dies."

I believe that the government has been handing out NDAs probably left, right and centre so although senior bosses at the airlines and airports (as well as a lot of industry) have some idea of what to expect, or at least a couple of choices they will not be releasing this information to anyone else.
The head of Heathrow has jiggled finances to cover up to 2 months shutdown. It may be needed, it may not, or it may not be enough, although after about 1 month there would be a lot of serious shouting going on.
Big industry, like BMW, Nissan etc have effectively said that they would shut down operations completely if necessary. They have schedules 2 - 4 weeks for now, to see how the dust settles on 30th March and if there is no suitable agreement in place they will wind down the plants. While the UK may consider the loss of BMW (for example) as a big deal it represents a fairly small percentage of BMWs worldwide production so yes it would 'sting' but not catastrophic to them.
Travel and holidays being disrupted around Brexit day are just 'tough' and unless something significant happens between now and mid December no one knows what will actually happen.

Jayfee · 19/10/2018 10:43

I feel like a salesperson on commission rather than a citizen worried about my country's future. But, I urge anyone who has not signed the final say petition to do so. They have 925000 signatures and are trying to get to a million before the march in London tomorrow.

LightastheBreeze · 19/10/2018 11:00

Some flights have said they will give refunds for cancelled flights for Brexit but not for any consequential loss, which I guess may be the case with most or no-one will book, best read small print before you book concerning refunds

Probably best to pay on a credit card to get money back through that if needs be, I do anyway for all stuff like that just in case.

Sorry, but you're not getting away with that one.

When Labour left government in 2010, the National Debt was £9.6 billion. After 8 years of Conservative government it stands at £2.1 trillion - i.e. it has more than doubled. During this time there has been 'Austerity', huge cuts to healthcare, social services and local council spending. Conservative Northamptonshire CC has already gone bust and others are set to follow as central government starves them of funds. 14 million people are living below the poverty line, including 4 million children. Food banks and charities are working round the clock just to keep the poorest fed, clothed and housed. All this in the world's 5th largest economy.

Havanananana · 19/10/2018 12:27

Oops - £960 billion of course, not £9.6 bn.

Still less than half the current level of over £2 trillion - www.nationaldebtclock.co.uk/
