That a male just won a women’s cycling World Championship?

Can’t really get my mind round this tbh though i was aware of another male Laurel Hubbard taking medals in the Women’s Weight Lifting World Championships earlier this year. Are we really ready for males winning the Women’s Wimbledon Title and the women’s Olympic 100m Final?

For those quibbling on this: men have longer reach, more powerful grip, bigger lung capacity, more muscle mass etc. All the biological advantages to compete for a mate and hunt on the plains. No amount of hormone therapy is going to change that. The weakest man on earth is still physically more advantaged than a lot of women of the same size. And they bloody know it.

He's taking drugs in order to qualify into a category he doesn't belong in.

It's cheating at its most basic level.

This with bells on

I just showed the picture to my OH.
He agreed that this is an utterly ridiculous state of affairs. If we are entering a world with more than 3 genders then we need sporting categories for however genders there are. So Olympic catagories for men, women, trans men, trans women or it isn't a true competition.
I also have the concern of rouge nations cheating by taking promising young male competitors and forcing them into gender reassignment in order to gain an advantage, like the east Germans/ Russians used to do by pumping the female athletes with steroids/ hormones in the 70's.
There is a debate though as to if it's a male/ female issue, as the trans women don't see themselves as male and he can't imagine any man gaining any satisfaction at all out of competing in this way. I'm inclined to agree with him. This is a definite woman/ trans community issue, and one that seems to show that some trans women appear to have a degree of contempt for other women and their own fight for recognition and equality.
It seems sad that these trans women are creating a hostile situation when we could be allies.
I think I need to learn more about these issues. I'll get me off too the feminist board.

SlowlyShrinking · 15/10/2018 18:41

To those who are saying ‘how can he enjoy his win when he knows he’s cheating?’ he might get a buzz out of violating boundaries and knowing that he has the power to trample all over women who’ve trained hard in their sport. Not saying he does get off on it, but it’s definitely a possibility.

lljkk · 15/10/2018 18:41

It's not a very important competition (not missing point, but don't think this event will be the one to spark any change, either).

pigsDOfly · 15/10/2018 18:43

He's taking drugs in order to qualify into a category he doesn't belong in.

Absolutely. But in truth he isn't qualifying for that category is he because he still has the body of a man and he always will have.

How can anyone justify this? It's beyond crazy.

Tomatoesrock · 15/10/2018 18:44

Does drug testing no apply to trans. I can't get my head around this, how is it been allowed it is ridiculous.

Onceuponatime21 · 15/10/2018 18:45

I hate this. It's so awful, and the fact that the IOC et al are allowing this to happen is like something from 1984. Completely beggars belief that the trans athlete is proud to stand on that podium. I just hope this farce is over soon, before it puts off too many young women from playing sport.

Loopytiles · 15/10/2018 18:48

“Not a very important competition”: depends on your point of view. Probably pretty important for those who have trained for and are competing in it.

Adelino · 15/10/2018 18:49

I'm thinking about self IDing as a 5 year old and entering next summer's egg and spoon race so that I can flaunt it on twitter.
Those little reception. Children can just get over it and had better be gracious in defeat.

Newsofas · 15/10/2018 18:50

If you think this is wrong then you need to complete the government gender consultation which closes on FRIDAY. This will be your only chance to say what you think about this. This will happen in the U.K. if men and women don’t do something about it. The olympics committee have already changed the rules regarding how much testosterone a woman can have in her body to compete which will open up the opportunity for men self identifying as women to compete in traditional women’s sports. If you need help to complete the consultation (govt have made it difficult to understand) then head over to the FairPlay website and use their assistance.

lljkk · 15/10/2018 18:58

Females age 35-39 who do track cycling performing at a level to compete at this level & have resources to travel to LA: not many.

tbh, I thought there were at least 4 annual world track championships, but that's not Masters level events.

Olympics will the sort of event to truly draw attention to the problem.

shamofamockery · 15/10/2018 19:01

Women (actual real ones) boycotting all sporting events as soon as trans women ie men enter. That is the only way to deal with this shit.

This. Absolutely this.

placemats · 15/10/2018 19:02

I'm so looking forward to the women's volleyball.

WillNotBeSilenced · 15/10/2018 19:03

This is the link to the quick version of the consultation:

He raced as a woman because there were only 99 of them in the competition, versus 411 men ....

Please can someone explain this bit to me: Confused

"I’m still forced to have an unhealthily low endogenous testosterone value… it’s virtually undetectable it’s so low… way below the average for women,” wrote the champion."

BigChocFrenzy · 15/10/2018 19:29

iirc, Transwomen are allowed to compete if they have a testosterone level that would disaqualify any women.

kaitlinktm · 15/10/2018 19:31

Does that make a difference to their performance then?

lljkk · 15/10/2018 19:33

Weird, the results aren't posted yet. No video on youtube, even. There is 2014 footage of women's sprint final, but nothing from 2018. I think the win was on 12 October?

Ariclock · 15/10/2018 19:35

Kaitlinktm read the comments that timetidothis made above, that will hopefully answer your question.

ShotsFired · 15/10/2018 19:37

kaitlinktm "I’m still forced to have an unhealthily low endogenous testosterone value… it’s virtually undetectable it’s so low… way below the average for women,” wrote the champion."

Given the situation, it may be relevant to apply Occams Razor to this - the simplest explanation is the right one.

In which case I simply assume that anything Rachel Mckinnon says is utter bilgewater, until and unless I am proven otherwise.

BigChocFrenzy · 15/10/2018 19:38

I would gladly support & campaign for separate categories for transmen and transwomen, if they don't want to compete as their biological sex

However, transwomen are simply cheating if they compete against women
and transmen have no chance of winning a serious competition against men

There is competition at all levels of sport, from the most local village teams - where a lot of women are in with a shot if we train hard - up through town and city events, then regional, national, European, World / Olympics

Several years ago, I took pride in winning a couple of press-up competitions at my gym - I beat the nearest woman by quite a way, but the man who won their category managed 2 x the number I did

That's opportunities at a great variety of levels, all lost if we end up with only men's and transwomen's sports.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 15/10/2018 19:41

Olympics will the sort of event to truly draw attention to the problem

Actually that's a pretty good point

Even if this kind of behaviour makes a mockery of the whole thing, at least people might finally sit up and take notice
