I never used to go around with a water bottle, let alone, grab a cup of coffee

All these posters saying a coffee cup screams "look at me I am oh so busy." Really? you honestly think that? I just assumed that the person fancied a coffee and got one 'on the go' because they could. Never even thought for one second it was some kind of statement.

I’m taking small consolation that we seem to be much more important and noteworthy to other people than we had ever dreamed. Grin

Shitlandpony
I think that's one of the good things about MN. Even when you disagree with posters on some things There'll be threads where you think 'damn they're spot on'.
I've had a few of them. There's been some ones recently where I've noticed names and although we normally have really different views our replies have been almost identical. Smile

shrunkenhead · 18/10/2018 20:16

Surely if people weren't out to "make a statement" etc they'd put that bottle of water in their bag so no one would notice....or drink that coffee in a cafe, so no one would notice. They clearly want to be seen and noticed and judged (positively) or else why the permanent bottle/coffee cup in hand trend?!
As a PP said, it started with celebs in their "activewear" being posted in magazines with bottle/cup attached to hand that started this craze and now some women wish to mimic this trend....as I said earlier, I just eye roll and carry on with my life. They clearly care about it more than I do as I don't care about how I'm perceived, busy? celebrity?, hydrated? or not.

Delatron · 18/10/2018 20:18

What if they don’t have time to spend 30
minutes sitting in a cafe drinking coffee?

There are plenty of people walking around drinking coffee. You are seriously eye rolling them all? How strange.

Newerversion · 18/10/2018 20:24

Good god! Take away coffees are available and people take them away and drink them on the go. How is that any kind of statement? seriously?

Where I often walk my dogs there is little coffee van, many dog walkers grab a coffee to take on the walk with them (lots even bring their own reusable mug for him to fill) They are no more making a statement than if they used the loo that is available or sat on the bench that is available.

MNMH · 18/10/2018 20:48

This is REALLY getting ridiculous now. Some of you have a odd set of rules people need to abide by so they don't annoy YOU personally. You can't possibly know why people carry coffee or water!
Not a "fleeting" thought, and definitely not about environmentalism. Just people grasping at straws to feel superior.

CoughLaughFart · 18/10/2018 20:57

What absolute bollocks. You make it sound like being ‘noticed’ drinking coffee is somehow beyond shameful. If someone sees me putting on lipstick, does that mean I was desperate to be ‘noticed’ doing it? Or just that I happened to be in their eyeline whilst doing something perfectly innocent?

As for putting the bottle in their bag, doesn’t that rather defeat the object? How are they meant to drink it - through a really long invisible straw?

GloomyMonday · 18/10/2018 20:57

"Surely if people weren't out to "make a statement" etc they'd put that bottle of water in their bag so no one would notice....or drink that coffee in a cafe, so no one would notice."

I don't put my water in my bag because I once had a bottle leak disastrously.

I don't drink coffee in a cafe because it feels like 30 mins wasted, and not particularly enjoyable to sit there alone either. I want a coffee, not a sit down.

I'm not making a statement though. I don't actually know what sort of statement £1 bottle of water or a £3 coffee makes. I'm just having a drink, oblivious to what anyone else might think about that. Well, until now. Just one more thing in life to feel judged about. What a mean spirited thread.

ohshitonit · 18/10/2018 21:08

I'm so embarrassed for so many of these posters, it's all a bit 'mean girls' isn't it!

I think, basically, the posters being nasty about water bottles and activewear might actually be aware that they neglect their own fitness/basic health and so they are noticing others looking after themselves and feeling jealous.
Its the only explanation I can think of, I can't imagine drinking water annoying someone, and I don't believe for one second that anyone does it because it's a trend.

Vinegarchipsticks · 18/10/2018 21:19

Grin I like drinks from coffee shops, I don't like coffee shops to sit in though, nothing more to it for me then that. Think your overthinking this, no one is getting coffee to be noticed, I doubr anyone is craving f a 1 second glimpse off someone as they walk past with a coffee! Confused

Oh love. You think other people care about your opinion much more than they actually do.

I drink my coffee at the most convenient and enjoyable time for coffee in my day: my morning commute. Either I’ve just dropped the kids at school and nursery and am trying to get to work as quickly as possible, or I know I’m doing pickup so want to get to work as early as possible. I get a coffee on the way (reusable cup to spare the waste-swooners) and drink it either on the train or walking from the station to work. As soon as I get to work it’s batshit mental, plus coffee from the nice place would be on the cold side.

I never really considered that others saw it as performance art. Or that it was shameful, to be consumed indoors where ‘no one would notice.’ This thread has been an eye opener into how much people can read into ‘person consumes beverage in public.’

JassyRadlett · 18/10/2018 21:51

I'd kill to have enough free time in my day to loll about in a coffee shop drinking coffee!

I am envious that this is seriously an option for so many people on a daily basis. It’s my very occasional weekend treat, drinking a coffee in a cafe.

MNMH · 18/10/2018 21:55

Exactly. I don't think people go into coffee shops thinking "ooh, I'm gonna look SO COOL" holding something that massively produced. Everyone in those long lines are all doing so to impress judgy strangers? Most of them have better things to focus on and think about, unlike the people who make up weird baseless stories about them.

MNMH · 18/10/2018 21:56

*THAT'S massively produced

GloomyMonday · 18/10/2018 21:57

And surely the water-carriers are doing it to be thrifty, and to avoid waste. Otherwise they'd be in danger of buying disposable bottles willy nilly and then where would we all be eh? So, if there is a statement being made, it's 'I'm thinking of the environment' or 'I'm trying to save a few quid by carrying my own water around'.

Sometimes I get my coffee at a drive thru so I drink it in the car. Nobody even sees me drink it, so how is it a performance?
