Grandmother hijacking MY wedding day

It's my wedding day today - we've all just left the church. So as not to drip-feed, my immediate family have long connections to York, but my very elderly DGM was insistent that we have the service at her local parish church in Berkshire. Fair enough, I didn't object to this.

Normally, I get on really well with her, although she's never been particularly fond of my DM (she and my DF - her DS - divorced many years ago), so I was more than happy to make this concession as I knew it would mean so much to her. Plus, she did very kindly pretty much pay for the whole wedding, so I couldn't really deny her that, could I?

But let's get one thing straight: it's MY wedding - not hers. She had hers decades ago. It's MY turn now - MY big, special day, right? It's all about my new husband and me and what WE want on this one single occasion, no?

Well, everything went really beautifully. We had the service that we'd specifically chosen - hymns and readings that mean a lot to us personally as a couple. All very naice. We were so happy to finally be married and prepared to leave the church as husband and wife.

So you can imagine my absolute horror when, right at the very end - the grand climax of OUR one-off, very special day - I discovered that it had been arranged for everybody to sing a big, triumphant-sounding song that somebody had written quite a while back ABOUT MY GRANDMOTHER and how important SHE is!!!!

AIBU (and I know I'm not) for being absolutely furious that our perfect wedding day was hijacked right at the end by my 'D'GM and, suddenly, my new husband and I were completely forgotten as she made it all about her, her, her?

That was a cracking full court curtesy OP, you obviously haven’t got bad knees like me.

YoThePussy · 12/10/2018 15:33

curtsy

Christmasplanner · 12/10/2018 15:52

Granny did wear a particularly nice hat though, one of her best.

ambereeree · 12/10/2018 16:31

Good one OP! You looked absolutely gorgeous by the way. Very elegant dress.

RomanyRoots · 12/10/2018 17:09

I would love to nominate this for classics.

yy558 · 12/10/2018 17:26

Don't return the tiara to your grandmother and go NC. It's the very least you deserve Grin

HildaZelda · 12/10/2018 17:38

Absolutely bloody brilliant thread OP GrinGrinGrin

MissusGeneHunt · 12/10/2018 17:43

Hahaha!!! Excellent!!! Took me a while... Doh!

MissusGeneHunt · 12/10/2018 17:44

Yes, nomination for classics @MNHQ please!

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 12/10/2018 17:52

Congrats Eugenie Wine

BlueJava · 12/10/2018 18:23

Concentrate on the amazing car you had, forget the stuff about the song. Old ppl do weird things.

florenceheadache · 12/10/2018 18:49

It was a beautiful day, stay focused E. It is your special day after all.

runsmidgeOMG · 12/10/2018 19:10

Love this thread !! Off to google the pictures !

Mammylamb · 12/10/2018 19:24

Brilliant!

strawberrisc · 12/10/2018 20:23

Nominate for classics? It was clever but no “snapped and farted” or “man without rhythm”.

chilledteacher · 12/10/2018 22:33

On the plus side, the BBC subtitler was kind to highlight your natural err...assets today. :)

I think your Gran has every right to insist on the song, it was that amazing curtsey that you had to perform in your fabulous dress that got me.

Knittedfairies · 12/10/2018 23:21

Why did your mum wear a hat with a Golden Snitch attached to it? (Although to be fair, your immediate family does have form for wearing odd hats)

TheCherries · 13/10/2018 18:01

You looked stunning, a slight waddle with the heavy weight of the dress and tiara and no doubt a bit unpractised in your new shoes too, gorgeous all the same.

Just a bit of a shame your uniformed attendants were so busy making sure the roads were clear of any device on Thursday, standing out in the gales on Friday to line the empty streets and now making sure you are all safe in your second private bash of today, that they don’t have anyone about to investigate the unprovoked attack on my darling son.

Not to worry, I am sure you will all have had a marvellous time.

Jayfee · 13/10/2018 18:14

Just don't go involving yourself in any toe sucking and you should have a happy married life

AviatorShades · 13/10/2018 18:21

And I'm sure it's true - she probably DOES have beautiful breasts Grin

LouH1981 · 13/10/2018 18:26

Brilliant! Told my hubby if I get married again I’m having a dress like yours! PS - I’m guessing your Grandma is sick of hearing that song!

onefootinthegrave · 13/10/2018 18:29

You've got one detail wrong... your DGM didn't pay for the lot, us plebs did.

Stillonthatbloodycomputer · 13/10/2018 18:40

👏👏👏👏 I must be getting slow in my old age, took me forever before I cottoned on.....well done op

pollymere · 13/10/2018 18:48

GM was the only guest wearing an appropriate colour. Dark navy is not a suitable colour for a wedding as it could suggest mourning.
