Grandmother hijacking MY wedding day

It's my wedding day today - we've all just left the church. So as not to drip-feed, my immediate family have long connections to York, but my very elderly DGM was insistent that we have the service at her local parish church in Berkshire. Fair enough, I didn't object to this.

Normally, I get on really well with her, although she's never been particularly fond of my DM (she and my DF - her DS - divorced many years ago), so I was more than happy to make this concession as I knew it would mean so much to her. Plus, she did very kindly pretty much pay for the whole wedding, so I couldn't really deny her that, could I?

But let's get one thing straight: it's MY wedding - not hers. She had hers decades ago. It's MY turn now - MY big, special day, right? It's all about my new husband and me and what WE want on this one single occasion, no?

Well, everything went really beautifully. We had the service that we'd specifically chosen - hymns and readings that mean a lot to us personally as a couple. All very naice. We were so happy to finally be married and prepared to leave the church as husband and wife.

So you can imagine my absolute horror when, right at the very end - the grand climax of OUR one-off, very special day - I discovered that it had been arranged for everybody to sing a big, triumphant-sounding song that somebody had written quite a while back ABOUT MY GRANDMOTHER and how important SHE is!!!!

AIBU (and I know I'm not) for being absolutely furious that our perfect wedding day was hijacked right at the end by my 'D'GM and, suddenly, my new husband and I were completely forgotten as she made it all about her, her, her?

I didn't see the wedding as really not interested.
I love your thread though, well done, OP Grin

Not just paid for your wedding, gave you a home too, get a job. The tiara is better than the hat.

ThistleAmore · 12/10/2018 14:17

Ha! Top work. Wink

Has the penny dropped yet...????

MiggledyHiggins · 12/10/2018 14:30

Any fights at the reception yet?

Did the racist one (not Philip, the other one) pretend to mistake Meghan for the hired help yet?

shakeyourcaboose · 12/10/2018 14:36

I see people are saying Cara is 'out there' for wearing morning dress, am sure not as ground breaking as being made out to be! Although shes really reminding me of the Perdita character from Jilly Cooper! complete derail!

strawberrisc · 12/10/2018 14:41

At least my DSis wore much nicer head-attire this time - a jaunty sort of purple bandana (think Rambo batik). At a family wedding 7 years ago, she wore this monstrosity of a hat thing - it looked just like a toilet seat complete with wavy whiff-lines streaming from it.

Don’t worry OP. Your Mum made up for it on the hat front this time. Fret not.

Giraffey1 · 12/10/2018 14:42

Sorry. I’ve just sussed this thread. I’m so embarrassed .... I am clearly more gullible that I’d realised ....

hibeat · 12/10/2018 14:47

Giraffey1 you made my day.

IDoLoveToBeBesideTheSeaside · 12/10/2018 14:50

You're such a princess, E.

oyYou · 12/10/2018 14:56

OP, I didn't tune in this morning, so I don't know if GF was there, if so, did he have a making up snuggle with your Ma?

can you come back later and tell us how the party went, and did your Ma kick off her shoes at all?

Havaina · 12/10/2018 14:56

Haha, you had me until paragraph 5! I was getting very indignant on your behalf until then :)

JakeBallardswife · 12/10/2018 14:59

Well done OP, and enjoy your wedding day. Maybe if your honeymoon isn't in centreparcs, you'll still get to have bumsex?

FlowThroughIt · 12/10/2018 14:59

I completely forgot about the wedding so didn't immediately get this thread. A Friday seems like an odd choice for a royal wedding day.

Blondeshavemorefun · 12/10/2018 15:11

Brilliant thread, thank you, OP. Your curtesy was awesome, by the way.

Jeippinghmip · 12/10/2018 15:18

I’m so pleased you looked so good on your wedding day. Great choice of dress and the tiara without a veil was inspired.

GunpowderGelatine · 12/10/2018 15:20

You look stunning, but it's a shame your mother wore green Grin
