Cutlery.

Cut-le-ree
Not cuttle-ree

Sets my teeth on edge. What pronunciations annoy you?

OP posts:
YeTalkShiteHen · 12/10/2018 18:30

buscaution you’ve repeatedly and confidently asserted that there can be no alternative accepted pronunciations for letters.

But zeee/zed and aitch/haitch have been mentioned repeatedly.

And you tell me I can’t read 😂

You’re one of those Scots who hates Scotland and anything that is remotely Scottish aren’t you?

RhythmStix · 12/10/2018 18:31

'Flaccid' being pronounced as 'flassid' IT'S FLAX-ID. As in 'accident' or 'vaccine'. Grrr.

buscaution · 12/10/2018 18:31

also I'm not convinced you're a Scot as why say "I've lived here over 40 years" rather than just say you're a scot? Doesn't make sense.

Mostly because I'm over 40, but yes, please do accuse me of lying about that!

Blackoutblinds · 12/10/2018 18:33

Treacle lets all band together and teach these English how to say now.

I can’t dven spell it how I say it 😂😂😂

Blackoutblinds · 12/10/2018 18:33

*even

FermatsTheorem · 12/10/2018 18:33

According to Oxford dictionary flaxid or flassid will do!

en.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/flaccid

(I've always gone with flaccid myself... well, not gone with, been disappointed by, but you see what I mean...)

neurotransmittens · 12/10/2018 18:34

Pitt-sa for pizza 🤨
But then I pronounce bath as bar-th and not everyone says that.
I sound posh but I’m not.

Bloody hell thats a bit of a stretch from me saying jai is wrong!

Read your posts back, it’s really not.

Also, you declined to answer my point about other alternatively pronounced letters. Probably because it doesn’t suit your agenda of being wrong

OkPedro · 12/10/2018 18:35

blackoutblinds Nahhhaww
Is the closest I get to it :-D

JessieLemon · 12/10/2018 18:38

I hear Cuttle-Ree all the time. Mind boggling.

I also hear people mispronounce bought for brought. ‘I brought a house’ 😂

prettybird · 12/10/2018 18:38

FWIW, I say I'm Scottish and I've been here for 54 years, having arrived in Scotland when I was 3 Grin My mum was a very good English teacher too! Wink

Did have a few years away in NZ in my teens, in France as part of my degree and then 10 years in England after I graduated though Wink

Blackoutblinds · 12/10/2018 18:39

Pedro maybe nighhaye?

buscaution · 12/10/2018 18:40

Actually it was because I cba.

However, since you suggested I read my posts back, maybe you should. I addressed H ages ago. The confusion comes from mixing the phonetic sound Huh with the letter sound aitch. Zee/zed? I have no idea.

I don't see why thinking jai is wrong means I hate my heritage though. That's just ridiculous and a desperate dig.

What o don't like is Jai. It's quite simple.

FallenIvy · 12/10/2018 18:41

I said I was criticising people who said jai

That's a lot of people to criticise.

OkPedro · 12/10/2018 18:42

Yes I missed out the nigh part! blackout

amusedbush · 12/10/2018 18:43

It's definitely jag, not jab.

Though I say J to rhyme with K, and I dislike "jai" and "haitch".

No, you don’t have any idea, but for some reason it’s one group of people you’ve chosen to attack, repeatedly and sneer at.

Hence my apparently “desperate” comment. Only it’s not desperate, unlike your insistence on dictating what people say based on their own lives, education and experiences.

That’s not desperate, it’s pathetic.

simbobs · 12/10/2018 18:44

Sickth instead of sixth, just for starters.

Blackoutblinds · 12/10/2018 18:45

Seriously it’s ok for people to say things differently.

That’s why accents and regional variations.

Not everyone needs or wants to speak RP.

buscaution · 12/10/2018 18:47

There was no attack and no sneering.

A very factual comment 'jai is wrong, yes it is a criticism, but I did not attack or sneer at anybody.

I have been called fucking rude, accused of lying about being Scottish and told I hate Scotland and everything about it.

But yeah, I'm on the attack!

prettybird · 12/10/2018 18:47

It's fine to not like J-eye. I don't like J-eye either.

But I do try to stop myself mentally judging people who say J-eye, because I know that is wrong. Blush It's just different. Ditto with "haitch" - MN has taught me that in some regions and countries, that is an accepted pronounciation. So I've learnt. Smile

I don't however stop myself judging people who say "I seen" or "I done" or "I have went" though Grin

Middersweekly · 12/10/2018 18:49

It’s probably already been said but... scone! It’s pronounced s-gone NOT sc-own! I have loads but this one does my head in the most! Grin

buscaution · 12/10/2018 18:49

pretty I'm not mentally judging them. The letter sound has been taught to people incorrectly.
