Cutlery.

Cut-le-ree
Not cuttle-ree

Sets my teeth on edge. What pronunciations annoy you?

OP posts:
Hellsbells35 · 12/10/2018 17:52

I’m in Portsmouth and here people say ‘scrazed’ for grazed and ‘squinny’ for whining

FallenIvy · 12/10/2018 17:55

Draw instead of draw-er
I never heard this. Where do people say this?

I've seen this everywhere recently, especially on selling sites.

CowesTwo · 12/10/2018 17:56

I'm Scottish. I have never said JAI (J EYE) for JAY. I don't know anyone who does.

LostaraYil · 12/10/2018 17:57

The Welsh and, based on Poldark, Cornish pronunciation of nephew makes me cringe every time. Nevew instead of nefew. Arrggghhh!

FallenIvy · 12/10/2018 17:59

I was taught J-eye in school in Scotland. Also taught haitch.

Graphista · 12/10/2018 18:03

Yetalkahitehen thank you

YeTalkShiteHen · 12/10/2018 18:05

Graphista you’re most welcome. I’ve spent the last few minutes trying to think of a time when I’ve disagreed and there isn’t one so that should be 10/10! Grin

FermatsTheorem · 12/10/2018 18:05

Early primary in SE Scotland - j-eye and aitch here. (Took me ages and being on the receiving end of a lot of bullying in my subsequent English primary to turn that in to j-aye, and lose the rhotic "R" in "doing the ironing.")

BlueJava · 12/10/2018 18:06

I don't mind any of it... as long as I understand. I used to be a pedant but since living abroad and learning Chinese I stopped worrying about English, as I'm sure I murder their language!

FermatsTheorem · 12/10/2018 18:07

My least favourite - "chester draws for sale, good condition."

buscaution · 12/10/2018 18:07

Incidentally, I have lived in Scotland for over 40 years."

So you're not a Scot and you're criticising scots for how they pronounce something?

Eh?

I AM Scottish Confused

Also, just to clarify, I am not criticising sottish people, what with actually being one, I am criticising the people who say Jai. If nothing else is clear in this thread, the fact that not all Scottish people say jai is.

YeTalkShiteHen · 12/10/2018 18:09

I am criticising the people who say Jai

You’ve got no right and are actually being really fucking rude.

If nothing else is clear in this thread, the fact that not all Scottish people say jai is.

Nobody said they did. It’s you who has a problem with it.

buscaution · 12/10/2018 18:12

Another thing that's quite apparent. Not everyone can read.

YeTalkShiteHen · 12/10/2018 18:14

Not everyone can read

Aye you’re right, you’re just wrong about who Grin

prettybird · 12/10/2018 18:15

But you are criticising them because you are stating definitively and repeatedly, with no proof except for your opinion, that those that say Jeye are wrong. Confused

And I am saying that as a Scot who herself says Jay and hates Jeye. But at least I will admit that it is because I am a snob posh Grin

Graphista - I agreed with your post (which was much more articulately argued than anything Buscaution has asserted). My extremely vague memory of linguistics and history of language (as part of my degree, c 40 years ago Blush - but then I dropped Russian, which was the bit of History of Language I enjoyed) was that the Great Vowel Change in Medieval times might account for some of the regional differences.

Blackoutblinds · 12/10/2018 18:15

Crummy H said haitch is standard pronounciation in certain parts of Ireland and Northern Ireland.

Asteria36 · 12/10/2018 18:19

AL-mond. It's aahmund. We don't say cALm down...
My son gets very upset about nikey instead of Nike - his argument is that we don't say bikey instead of bike. He has a point.

buscaution · 12/10/2018 18:21

pretty.

I said I was not criticising Scottish people. As a whole. It came as a response to a post in which I was told I am not even a soft and I am criticising Scottish people. Well I am a Scot and I was not criticising Scottish people. I said I was criticising people who said jai. That's just some Scottish people.

I agree with your point about a PP being more articulate. I wish I could be better.

YeTalkShiteHen · 12/10/2018 18:23

I said I was criticising people who said jai. That's just some Scottish people

And that’s why I said you were being a snob. Because you are.

Cronaca66 · 12/10/2018 18:25

The pronunciation of the letter H as ‘ haitch’ - it’s spelling is AITCH therefore pronounced the same.
‘ secetary’ Is another - also ‘ restraunteur’ . Maybe I’m too picky!

buscaution · 12/10/2018 18:25

And that’s why I said you were being a snob. Because you are

Interesting.

Graphista · 12/10/2018 18:27

"You’ve got no right and are actually being really fucking rude"

Completely agree, also I'm not convinced you're a Scot as why say "I've lived here over 40 years" rather than just say you're a scot? Doesn't make sense.

Nobody else is saying "all scots say X" or anything similar, nobody else is being so rude as to arrogantly assume that THEIR way of speaking is the ONLY correct way.

And the comment about reading is weak and VERY rude and as you well know completely inaccurate.

"Great Vowel Change in Medieval times might account for some of the regional differences." Yes if I recall correctly there's still a few examples in original Chaucer texts, among others. It's coming on 15 years ago for me! But I still read articles and watch presentations when I can.

Blackoutblinds · 12/10/2018 18:28

Not in Ireland it isn’t. Or certain parts of Derry or Belfast. And definitely not in Armagh or Monaghan.

It’s haitch there and always has been.

brizzledrizzle · 12/10/2018 18:30

Cutlery is pronounced 'knives and forks' or 'spoons'

treaclesoda · 12/10/2018 18:30

Blackout I was told earlier that the Irish are wrong. The end. Grin
