Cutlery.

Cut-le-ree
Not cuttle-ree

Sets my teeth on edge. What pronunciations annoy you?

IVflytrap

Tooz-dee. My grandma used to say it like that. I loved it.

Yabbers · 12/10/2018 09:12

DD came up with a couple this morning.

Zeeeebra

Poyem

AnElderlyLadyOfMediumHeight · 12/10/2018 09:14

David Attenborough says zeebra, IIRC.

Can anyone help with a pronunciation query as to how Stüssy is pronounced; Stoozy, or Stuzzy. I believed it was Stoozy, ( as in Uber) as there are two dots over the ü. Son's friend insists it is pronounced Stuzzy.

AnElderlyLadyOfMediumHeight · 12/10/2018 09:15

Does anyone say, or know someone who says, 'dizzabled' and 'dizz-gusting'? I used to know someone who did and really disliked it.

AnElderlyLadyOfMediumHeight · 12/10/2018 09:17

The ü sound isn't really 'oo' - the closest approximation I guess is a very short oo. But they don't seem to be a German company (from a very quick google - never heard of them!) so tbh I guess the umlaut doesn't really mean anything.

Don’t you mean dizzliked?

SoupDragon · 12/10/2018 09:27

Son's friend insists it is pronounced Stuzzy.

I think this is how DS told me it is pronounced. That or stussy anyway. It definitely wasn’t Stoozy (although what you say makes sense with the ü)

AnElderlyLadyOfMediumHeight · 12/10/2018 09:27

Grin I did think of that - after posting. Oh for an edit window.

XscoutX · 12/10/2018 09:28

Baff (bath)
Free (three)
Kin (king)
My DD says spee-rit instead of spirit (we are Scottish not American)
My ex said carNtoons instead of cartoons really irritated me Hmm

Threads like this always crack me up. It's weird that people can't seem to accept that experiences different from their own are not "wrong". To the PP who said that people who pronounce J as JAI where not taught this in school; trust me, I was. I often find that people see some dialects (Northern/Scottish) as lesser but they don't realise that attitude is actually indicative of ignorance

YeTalkShiteHen · 12/10/2018 09:33

Thatstheendofmytether that came across on the programme to be fair, he seemed like a lovely guy just a wee bit lost and surrounded by fairly horrid people. I really really disliked that Dayna girl, she was horrible to him!

mundungus · 12/10/2018 09:47

Those of you who think you are spelling phonetically (and indisputably) when you write “ar” for “long a”: you’re not! To a person with a rhotic accent, “ar” is not pronounced the same as “ah”.

We should all learn the phonetic alphabet that’s used in dictionaries. Mind you, that would make threads like this less entertaining.

mikapatika · 12/10/2018 09:53

Stüssy like pussy isn’t it?

buscaution · 12/10/2018 09:58

I think the R in the middle of a word actually shows the long A sound. I have no idea what people write an R, but from previous threads that's what I have worked out.

When they write Sharn for Sian what they actually mean is Shaaan. For some u known reason people write a random R to show the heavy A.

Weird.

buscaution · 12/10/2018 09:59

Cross posted there because I took so long to write that. Thanks to DH providing me with tea and toast Blush

Seafour · 12/10/2018 09:59

I haven't rtft as I don't have time but the one that I can't stand is Eltse instead of Else it makes me so 😡

I understand dialects. But in the case of Jai it is not a local dialect, it's absolutely wrong. Pronunciation of words being different across the country is ok, but to change a letter sound at the basic alphabet level? That's not local dialect.

ThisIsTheFirstStep · 12/10/2018 10:07

bus well people learn it in school and everyone in their vicinity says it so...what do you want? For them to magically know that they’re pronouncing it ‘wrong’?

Funny how it’s always Scottish and Northern accents but SE English is allllll perfectly normal.

Thehop · 12/10/2018 10:07

I hate when people say “brought” instead of “bought”

My old GP pronounced it ibup-rofen, which totally threw me as I was used to ibu-pro-fen.
