to ask if you wear leggings?

My DH keeps making comments about my leggings - he says things like "are all your other clothes in the wash?"

I always wear a longish, flowy top which covers my hips and bum. When I ask him why he's making these comments he just says he's joking and I need to get a sense of humour!

Are leggings just for very slim women?

Too tight jeans look just as bad as too tight cheap ass leggings

FurryDogMother · 07/10/2018 13:04

I wear leggings all the time - and what's more, I wear them in Brighton so have probably been disapproved of in person by a PP :) Didn't feel a thing! I prefer them to black opaque tights because if I wore tights I wouldn't get to wear my black socks with yellow ducks on them, and I love those socks :)

hendricksy · 07/10/2018 13:05

Leggings are not flattering on most people . I know my dh doesn't like them . Can you maybe try tights and boots and dresses rather than leggings . Or just ignore him 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

HenryInTheTunnel · 07/10/2018 13:06

Ah bridge, see i approach it differently. If it's long enough to wear with bare legs then i would choose tights. If it's bum covering, but still short i'd choose leggings or jeans!

mrsglowglow · 07/10/2018 13:09

Love leggings but always dark and worn with long tops.

I've seen some terrible photos of flesh coloured leggings being worn with short teashirts and it looks as though the wearer has forgotten to put clothes on half their body.

Tallzarazara · 07/10/2018 13:10

Well it's wonderful to see that feminism is alive and kicking - not.

A lovely thread of women berating other women over some material that they choose to cover their legs with.

A nice bit of size judgment and "what do men prefer", added in.

Because being a feminist and having an opinion on fashion are mutually exclusive Hmm

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 07/10/2018 13:15

I wear pretty much nothing but Blush

MaryBoBary · 07/10/2018 13:15

About 5 days per week, the other 2 days I wear back up joggers. They are wonderful and comfy and I’m at home all day everyday anyway so would be uncomfortable and feel over dressed in say jeans.

MaisyPops · 07/10/2018 13:17

Feminism isn't blindly saying 'yes hun' to everything another woman says you know.

It's not anti feminist to think wandering around with your arse out in faded leggings showing your knickers print and camel toe looks ridiculous. It means someone has a different view on fashion.

I hate the idea that feminism is all yey hun you go girl and mindless encouragement of anything because a woman says it.

CharlotteWebb · 07/10/2018 13:17

My DH has apologised and said he thinks I look gorgeous whatever I wear. I have forgiven him and have moved on - I still have my leggings on :)

Hmm yes, because having an opinion on fashion is all it is Hmm

I wonder if men sit around discussing what other men look like in their clothes, whether the bigger guy should be wearing those joggers and wondering what women would think...

CharlotteWebb · 07/10/2018 13:18

Maisy LOL at camel toe I haven't heard that term for ages ha ha ha ha

Leggings are on par with tights in my books. So I would only wear them under clothing I could hypothetically wear with nothing underneath without exposing myself.

Ninoo25 · 07/10/2018 13:23

I’m size 18-20 and wear them under longish tunics or dresses. I wear very thick ones and normally wear them with boots, so I suppose you could think they were tights. I hate tights and find them uncomfortable and a bit sweaty so wear leggings instead. When I wear them with shoes as opposed to boots I do feel a bit scruffy, but at the end of the day I’d rather be comfortable

Tallzarazara · 07/10/2018 13:24

I have opinions on fashion, I certainly don't blindly say oh ye you go hun. Or whatever it was you said.

Yet funnily enough men's clothing never seems to come under nearly as much scrutiny. I wonder why.

Methe · 07/10/2018 13:26

Not outside the house unless they’re being used as a tights substitute under a dress. I might wear them for gardening or decorating. Leggings as trousers don’t look good on anyone.

HeyHoSwashbucklersGo · 07/10/2018 13:29

Thick black ones only, with a top that covers my bum. Really comfy. Although my main jeans right now are M&S jeggings, they’re comfy, don’t give me baggy knees when I’m up and down off the floor with my DC, and they don’t give baggy ankles to tuck into boots.

IABURQO · 07/10/2018 13:29

You're overthinking it. I live in leggings; I usually put a skirt on top to go out, but that's because I don't have many long tops.

MaisyPops · 07/10/2018 13:37

If I'm subjected to seeing men's ass crack, boxer prints and outlines of their balls then I consider them equally inappropriately dressed.
DH threw a pair of running longs out the other week because they were getting bobbly and faded (and as he rightly said the world shouldn't be subjected to that).

I love leggings. I have so many pairs that it's ridiculous. They are comfy and can look great.

I don't think faded, too thin leggings worn as trousers so the world can see underwear and outline of genitals is a good look. I think it looks ridiculous.

Kaykay06 · 07/10/2018 13:38

Used to wear them with tunic dresses skirts etc but stopped and I’m not sure if it’s because I put on weight of because I just didn’t like the fit anymore but have nothing against them or anyone who likes to wear them.

My sons friends who are girls are all tiny slim things who seem to wear them with crop tops etc and look rather fab in them (17 yr old girls) I just think lucky them I’ll never look like that again after 4 kids. Just wear what you’re comfy in and if you’re conscious about your weight be upfront with your partner and say that comments about what you’re wearing aren’t welcome and perhaps give him some fashion advice 😊😊

Lethaldrizzle · 07/10/2018 13:41

I've got very toned legs. Am I allowed to wear leggings?

TooManyPaws · 07/10/2018 13:42

I wear them every day for work instead of tights. I have never yet found a pair of opaque tights that are as comfortable as leggings as they usually end up with the crotch around my knees and/or the waistband constantly rolling under my belly. I wear them with flowing black calf-length skirts, a pretty top, and various different pairs of Doc Martens with the tops of hand-knitted socks showing, all coordinated to my top. I'm a dumpy short-legged hourglass with arthritis in my feet and legs, and one joint fusion so far, so this suits me and my work. In between seasons, I swop the Docs and socks for FitFlops with the same type of clothes and leggings. It's also easy to wear my knee supports with them under my skirt, and leggings don't get pulled down by them unlike tights. I wear short leggings under skirts in the summer to avoid rubbing.

I buy Asda leggings which are now into their second or third year with no bobbling, bagging or loss of colour. M&S are good though more expensive.

Birdsgottafly · 07/10/2018 13:43

""Apart from appearance, I am concerned that leggings encourage denial of weight gain, especially where it gets to the level of being potentially health threatening.""

I find that the more comfortable I am, the more I walk etc.

I wear leggings and sketchers. I'm out a lot with my Grandchildren and toddlers in the family. That involves on and off buses, sometimes having to fold prams with shopping. I get a day travel pass, but if I can, I'll miss a bus out and walk it. I don't do that in proper clothes and even my Timberland/Uggs.

I'm very active. I see Mums going to soft play and parks in clothes they can barely move in, heels/tight jeans and it puzzles me tbh.

Leggings and long tops means that I can move easily, they wash and i'm not showing anything when I'm bending/getting up and down. I do my hair and wear make-up, but my clothes are practical.

I used to be dog walking and taking relatives out in wheelchairs, being post menopause, I'm too hot and restricted in jeans. I wear the much maligned (on here) Maxi dresses over summer.

Jeans look crap because I struggle to get them to fit.

As for appearance, if you honestly looked at Women in jeans, they don't look any better.

But then neither do the equivalent Men. I've been out with my Grandchildren and like the Mums, there have been Dads who don't want to get dirty/creased/wear appropriate clothing and it's ridiculous.

You are lucky if you fit well fitting cloths that are practical and in your budget. I spend on my face, I get radiotherapy/micro-needling and peels. Watch what I eat. I notice people's skin etc more than their clothes.

MaisyPops · 07/10/2018 13:45

TooManyPaws
Primark do really good fleese lined leggings. They're fabulous in autumn and winter with boots. Once October hits that's what I largely live in.
