To let 10 YO DS watch a horror film?

DS10 has decided he doesn't want to trick or treat this year and wants to stay in and watch a "horror film".

He's seen most of the children's ones like Miss Peregrine, Hotel Transylvanias, The Witches etc.

He'd like to watch something a little more "grown up" but I can't seem to think of any that are suitable, or a 12A.

DH thinks Woman in Black is a good place to start but I was horrified that it's a 12 as I found it really scary and definitely unsuitable for a 10 year old!

What's your favourite mild horror?

Hmmm a tough one... I'd say women in black probably! Is he nearer to 11 than 10 or recently just turned 10?

Bringonspring · 07/10/2018 00:40

Nothing too scary! I watched s horror film
For my 13th and was very scared for s long time after. The ratings are there for s reason’

cookiesandchocolate · 07/10/2018 00:42

I found miss peregrine really bloody scary tbh! So if he can handle that then he would be okay with most 12s.

I used to be terrified as a teenager and my first scary film I watched properly without being terrified or having bad dreams was the sixth sense.

adoggymama · 07/10/2018 00:43

Maybe get him some goosebumps books or some kind of low scare scary books? I remember reading those when I was younger and being creeped out.

Wouldn't recommend a horror film (especially woman in black) for a 10year old. The ratings are there for a reason!

Is he into Harry Potter? That can be sometimes spooky and is great for Halloween time of year! X

garethsouthgatesmrs · 07/10/2018 00:45

Woman in black for a 10YO that's terrifying!!

How about beetlejuice?

garethsouthgatesmrs · 07/10/2018 00:46

casper the friendly ghost?

ProfessorMoody · 07/10/2018 00:47

It definitely won't be Woman in Black, I know he'd be scared by that and I think the dead child scenes are way too much.

He's seen Sixth Sense and is Harry Potter MAD so has watched them all multiple times Grin

He's right in the middle of 10/11.

I understand the ratings are there for a reason, however 12s are 12A meaning that it's adult guidance. He's seen lots of 12s including the Potters, Star Wars x all, Titanic etc, so that's fine with me.

gremlins, little shop of horros, coraline, arachnophobia

ProfessorMoody · 07/10/2018 00:48

He's seen Casper.

Beetlejuice! Brilliant idea, thanks Grin

I also remember loving Drop Dead Fred at that age but I'm sure it is a 15, so will have to check why.

labrynth?

I watched beetlejuice a lot as a pre teen - nothing inappropriate really apart from the fact that he is a perv but i don't think i noticed that at the time and he gets his comeuppance. plus its a comedy really so meant to be taken with a pinch of salt.

Ohyoshimi · 07/10/2018 00:54

Ghostbusters? New or old. Or monster films - Jurassic world, kong skull island, rampage. I also thought Beetlejuice.

Peacockfeathers789 · 07/10/2018 00:56

Ghostbusters 2? I remember watching that as a kid and finding some parts of it really terrifying, but there’s enough action and humour in it to balance it out

Sparklesocks · 07/10/2018 00:56

Hocus pocus?
The witches?
The others is a bit like sixth sense

Sundayblues13 · 07/10/2018 00:57

I have a DC 10 we have 🎃 soup , trick or treat then watch a “horror “ so usually paranorman etc if he feels he can go to the next level do it with him , turn it off if it’s too much . If they understand it’s make believe then they can understand the film x

garethsouthgatesmrs · 07/10/2018 00:57

agree with ghostbusters,

also what about "the others" with nicole kidman, I couldn't have watched it at that age but if he was ok with sixth sense then it a similar vibe.

TeeniefaeTroon · 07/10/2018 00:59

I watched Drop Dead Fred with my 6 year old last week and apart from a few swear words it was fine. I searched first for a parents review and it said there were 4 swear words in it, DS took great delight in telling me every time there was a swear word and that there was more than 4 😂

LadyLaSnack · 07/10/2018 03:45

The Burbs is a good mix of comedy/horror for a child that age.

vinegarqueen · 07/10/2018 04:16

Seconding Little Shop or Ghostbusters - also genuinely great films IMO. Hocus Pocus is my go-to Halloween film.

Courtney555 · 07/10/2018 04:29

DS also 10 watched gremlins the other day, he absolutely loved it. Scared the crap of of me as a child. I think things have moved on quite significantly. He also likes Jaws, although that's more action movie.

polkadotpixie · 07/10/2018 05:33

Zombieland? If you've not seen it, it's a comedy horror and really not scary at all (I hate scary movies and loved it). We showed it to my husband's 11 yr old half brother who is a massive wimp regarding anything slightly scary and he was fine so I'm sure a 10 yr old would be too

NerrSnerr · 07/10/2018 05:57

How about Signs?

brizzledrizzle · 07/10/2018 06:03

Ghostbusters.

ForTheLoveOfSleep · 07/10/2018 06:11

The 'Burbs
The Village
The Others
The Haunting
Signs

TeeniefaeTroon · 07/10/2018 10:44

Arachnophobia?

DayManChampionOfTheSun · 07/10/2018 10:53

Sixth sense scared the absolute shit out of me when I first saw it, it was the beginning bit with the man in the house. Eurgh still gives me shivers. If he can handle that, with the hangings and the girl in the tent etc, I would say he could handle most films of that age range.

I do love horror and always have done, I watched Scream when I was about 10 (mates older brother showed it to us) and that was then and will always be my favorite movie.
