To let 10 YO DS watch a horror film?

DS10 has decided he doesn't want to trick or treat this year and wants to stay in and watch a "horror film".

He's seen most of the children's ones like Miss Peregrine, Hotel Transylvanias, The Witches etc.

He'd like to watch something a little more "grown up" but I can't seem to think of any that are suitable, or a 12A.

DH thinks Woman in Black is a good place to start but I was horrified that it's a 12 as I found it really scary and definitely unsuitable for a 10 year old!

What's your favourite mild horror?

Mine both thought Goosebumps was quite scary enough when it first came out.

That one with Nicole Kidman in a big house with her two children is a 12 (the Others). It's quite scary though.

fishonabicycle · 07/10/2018 18:54

Monster House is great though

Have you seen it recently? It's got a lot of swearing, some really weird bits and some pretty gruesome special effects. I would say it's too much for a 10 year old. My 12 year.old is found it quite disturbing!! It's very dark.

SeagIass · 07/10/2018 19:19

The Babadook?!? Is that a joke? It has a masturbation scene in it for a start!

ThanosSavedMe · 07/10/2018 19:20

I agree with pp. Some of the films suggested are totally unsuitable. There’s a reason why they’re a 15 or 18.

Onlyfamandclosefknow · 07/10/2018 19:21

I know! There are some strange suggestions on here!

Passmethecrisps · 07/10/2018 19:26

I am pretty surprised by some of the films suggested here.

I had to put Coraline on at work the other day and two girls had to get paper to draw at the same time as they couldn’t face watching it. A senior pupil was genuinely surprised we were showing it, saying it was too scary.

themuttsnutts · 07/10/2018 19:28

Monster House

SubtitlesOn · 07/10/2018 19:29

Not sure if you would class it as horror film

But STAND BY ME (1986) is good film

With bits of tension like on train track over bridge etc

Tors33 · 07/10/2018 19:31

What about labyrinth or fantastic beasts I love both of those films

MissionItsPossible · 07/10/2018 19:35

Wow, point horror! Forgot about that! Does anyone remember the one where the rollercoaster fell off the track and then the killer was the brother and he fell to his death in the funhouse!? And the one with the babysitter getting creepy phone calls? (The original Scream)

Tors33 · 07/10/2018 19:35

Or haunted mansion with Eddie Murphy

SubtitlesOn · 07/10/2018 19:36

Sorry just seen it is rated 15

Duskqueen · 07/10/2018 19:36

Babadook? Really, j watched that as an adult who loves scary films and didn't sleep for a week. I found the fact that she nearly killed her son horrific.

MissionItsPossible · 07/10/2018 19:37

What about Ginger Snaps? An excellent film.

JacquesHammer · 07/10/2018 19:38

Funhouse is one of my favourites! The roller coaster is called The Devil’s Elbow Grin

ClashCityRocker · 07/10/2018 19:46

Yes, the fun house one was great.... Was the roller coaster called the devil's elbow or something or did I dream that?

What about An American Werewolf?

CaptainKirkssparetupee · 07/10/2018 19:48

What about An American Werewolf?

For a 10 year old?

no.

ClashCityRocker · 07/10/2018 19:48

Oops that'll teach me to read all the way to the end Blush

Was there one called the snowman too?

And one about summer camp that was suspiciously similar to a well known horror franchise....

I also loved Christopher Pike in a similar vein... I remember reading Road To Nowhere and deciding that I would be naming my first born Freedom Jack....

JellieEllie · 07/10/2018 19:49

Edward Scissorhands. Not too scary but scary enough for a 10 year old

Miladymilord · 07/10/2018 19:55

Spirited away?

Tbh I wouldn't have shown my 10 year olds anything suggested on this bizarre thread. They even found monster house terrifying at that age!

The idea.of.watching the Babadook with a 10 year old is making me laugh.
