To let 10 YO DS watch a horror film?

DS10 has decided he doesn't want to trick or treat this year and wants to stay in and watch a "horror film".

He's seen most of the children's ones like Miss Peregrine, Hotel Transylvanias, The Witches etc.

He'd like to watch something a little more "grown up" but I can't seem to think of any that are suitable, or a 12A.

DH thinks Woman in Black is a good place to start but I was horrified that it's a 12 as I found it really scary and definitely unsuitable for a 10 year old!

What's your favourite mild horror?

Hocus pocus
Beetle juice
Nightmare before Christmas

ProfessorMoody · 07/10/2018 11:03

Thanks everyone! He's seen most of the younger ones you've listed, some are HUGE family favourites like Nightmare Before Christmas and Labyrinth! He's seen Arachnophobia and Swarm.

Beetlejuice seems like a good idea, I also wondered about Blair Witch as I remember watching it and thinking that nothing actually happens apart from it being intense, so that might be an idea too.

Yeah see, I remember seeing Scream when I was young, and I Know What you Did Last Summer as well as Poltergeist, Child's Play and even the Exorcist at about 12! I don't think people cared as much back then.

Has he watched the Goosebumps film?

Maybe start watching the Stranger Things series with him on Netflix? Been thinking my son could watch this too, he also loved the Miss P film!

Grimbles · 07/10/2018 11:14

I found Blair witch disturbing precisely because not much happens. The last scene really stayed with me for a while Blush

Reaa · 07/10/2018 11:17

Sixth Sense - My 10 year old watched it a few weeks ago and enjoyed it, was not scared at any point and realised what the film was about about halfway through.

CaptainKirkssparetupee · 07/10/2018 11:18

Monster squad, for some reason it's now a 15, but there's nothing bad horrorwise in it.

ClashCityRocker · 07/10/2018 11:18

It depends what you're comfortable with really.

The paranormal activity series (OK, I've only seen the early ones) are scary but no gore or anything too psychologically damaging - think they're a fifteen, but suspect that is more to do with language than horror. Jumpy more than anything else.

Hocus pocus is good for a younger audience.

Legend of sleepy hollow?

Celestia26 · 07/10/2018 11:19

Hocus Pocus! Perfect for Halloween. I watched it when I was 9.

Ilovehamabeads · 07/10/2018 11:21

Has he seen Goosebumps? That’s an absolute favourite of my DS who’s also 10. There’s also a Goosebumps 2 coming to cinemas this month which DS has asked to go and watch around Halloween, plus there’s the bazillion goosebumps books if he likes reading too.

NotUmbongoUnchained · 07/10/2018 11:22

Old horror movies like nightmare on elmstreet aren't remotely scray anymore. maybe something like that. Something with really dodgy effects.

ProfessorMoody · 07/10/2018 11:25

He's seen Hocus Pocus, Sixth Sense, Goosebumps etc.

Not seen Sleepy Hollow though!

Hmm yes the old ones I don't think would be scary any more. I'll look up Monster Squad!

The Paranormal Activities scared me but I am a massive wuss Grin

Oh yes, Stranger Things would be brilliant! He loves D&D and nerdy 80s stuff, and we really enjoyed it.

I don't think he's read any Goosebumps actually, I'll have to suggest it. He's into Narnia atm.

I remember reading Point Horror at about the same age, they were awesome!

If you will let him watch stranger things then The Lost Boys is a must.

I'll look up Monster Squad

A bunch of kids fight the universal movie monsters.

Straighttalkersneeded · 07/10/2018 11:31

I find the imdb parents guide ratings helpful when babysitting my brother's 10-14 year olds.

JacquesHammer · 07/10/2018 11:34

My DD is a horror freak. She’s just 12 but at a similar age to your DS devoured Point Horror.

She then read Woman in Black and Dracula.

She loved Goosebumps, The Others etc also is a massive fan of retro movies like Jumanji.

RockYourSocksOff · 07/10/2018 11:35

Ds keeps asking if he can watch It! Hmm

RockYourSocksOff · 07/10/2018 11:36

Will have to look into Point Horror for Ds. He loved all of the Goosebump books, Pittacus Lore and has just devoured Zom-B!

Hushnownobodycares · 07/10/2018 11:38

League Of Extrordianary Gentlemen

Van Helsing

Donnasaurus · 07/10/2018 11:40

We've just watched happy death day which was quite good, jumpy but not scary, my daughter's 11 and loved it

ProfessorMoody · 07/10/2018 11:42

Monster Squad sounds great. I'm wondering why I haven't seen it! We've watched Lost Boys, another family favourite, and Jumanji! He didn't enjoy Goonies though Confused

I'm not sure if you can still get Point Horrors but I'm going to try Grin

MoistCantaloupe · 07/10/2018 11:42

I second The Lost Boys - watched it at that age and still love it now!

MoistCantaloupe · 07/10/2018 11:43

Argh, I see he’s seen it! Smile

CaptainKirkssparetupee · 07/10/2018 11:43

There are two terrible sequals to The Lost Boys made about 10 years ago.

CaptainKirkssparetupee · 07/10/2018 11:45

The Karate Kid is technically a Halloween movie.....

RockYourSocksOff · 07/10/2018 11:46

Takes me back (too) many years ago when we used to watch the Carry On horror film which was always on during Halloween/bonfire night!
