To let 10 YO DS watch a horror film?

DS10 has decided he doesn't want to trick or treat this year and wants to stay in and watch a "horror film".

He's seen most of the children's ones like Miss Peregrine, Hotel Transylvanias, The Witches etc.

He'd like to watch something a little more "grown up" but I can't seem to think of any that are suitable, or a 12A.

DH thinks Woman in Black is a good place to start but I was horrified that it's a 12 as I found it really scary and definitely unsuitable for a 10 year old!

What's your favourite mild horror?

Carry On Screaming Grin

SeagIass · 07/10/2018 11:49

What about The Hole? Please note there are two horror films called The Hole and one of them is for younger viewers and the other, starring Thora Birch and Keira Knightley, is ABSOLUTELY NOT.

blurredspeech · 07/10/2018 11:49

Close Encounters of the Third Kind?

CaptainKirkssparetupee · 07/10/2018 11:51

Gremlins 1 and 2?

And all the knock off movies that came after with like Critters, Ghoulies, Munchies and so on.

adviceonthepox · 07/10/2018 11:52

Jumanji? Ghostbusters, gremlins, critters? They were all firm favourites of my boys at around that age.

CaptainKirkssparetupee · 07/10/2018 11:53

Addams family?

SharedLife · 07/10/2018 11:58

We've been to see House With the Clock in the Walls this week, very scary and very fun. I'd say it's suitable for a child who enjoys jump scares and creepy animatronic doll thingies!

JacquesHammer · 07/10/2018 12:01

I'm not sure if you can still get Point Horrors but I'm going to try

Charity shops. I’ve got almost a full collection again Grin

RockYourSocksOff · 07/10/2018 12:03

Shared, I need to see this with Ds. We love Jack Black!

PanchoBarnes · 07/10/2018 12:10

ï¿£
The Ghost and Mr. Chicken

Fun and a little goofy, but with a scare element -- if he wouldn't mind an older one. I loved that movie when I was a kid.
wouldn't mind seeing again!

I also loved The Birds and Psycho (the original) and those were old back then, but I still liked watching them.
And, To Kill a Mockingbird.

Notquiteagandt · 07/10/2018 12:12

Not a film. But I used to love the "are you afraid of the dark" series at that age. I used to watch it every night before bed.

Halloween town? Or is that a bit young?

Sleepy hollow.

I used to love all the 60s & 70s horrors as they looked so dated and obvioualy fake they didnt seem quite so scary. The thing the blob etc

Poltergeist or dark skies. More jumpy than anything actually happening. No swearing or anything sexual etc from memory.

If he loves sixth sense what about the village? Same director so simular feel.

Notquiteagandt · 07/10/2018 12:22

The mummy
Cloverfield
Pirates of the carribean
Dark knight

Not horrors but still quite dark and suspense films. All 12a nothing too sexual or swearing etc.

Nooo to 'the others' I'm in my 20's and that film still terrifies me Blush
My mum made me watch it with her when I was about 11 and I had to sleep with the light on for weeks.
I can do horror but creepy mind shit
No thanks Grin

Rosehip10 · 07/10/2018 12:25

Green mile?

princ3ssconsuelabananahammock · 07/10/2018 12:26

If he’s a child that isn’t easily scared Woman in Black should be fine- no awful grotesque violence. My parents weren’t fussed on what we watched as kids and I watched much worse at that age, never did me any harm I’ve always just enjoyed being scared in that sense- maybe he’s the same.

nocutsnobuttsnococonuts · 07/10/2018 13:50

I started watching horror films around 11/12, was fine with slash ones like scream/halloween/friday 13th but nightmare on elm street freaked me out the concept of him coming in dreams made sleeping difficult! What freaks us out as adults is different. My dds can only just handle Coraline and Scooby doo, my eldest is coming up 10 so won't be watching any of these soon! Dd1 freaked out seeing the bride of chucky box!

How about the mummy and it's sequels.
tv series like the vampire diaries/the originals, bitten, buffy the vampire slayer/angel.
Sharknado and it's sequels are gory but very silly.
Something a bit different there's some anime that's quite gory - Tokyo ghoul, death note and attack on titan.

Common sense media is good to see why films are rated as they are so you can decide before watching.
Not personally a fan but twilight and others like it.

Sheena99 · 07/10/2018 15:28

I liked the Frighteners, nothing too bad in it for a 10 year old.

Lemontart25 · 07/10/2018 15:42

Gremlins, Sleepy Hollow, Van Helsing, Twilight... not scary I know but a good film.
IT, Final destinantion.

angieloumc · 07/10/2018 16:17

I'm very surprised at some of the films being suggested for a 10 year old. I'm not a fuddy-duddy I don't think but Sixth Sense, The Others, Paranormal Activity or Blair Witch are really scary films!
Mind you my DD who's now 14 was terrified of Coraline at 10 and still is.

Oysterbabe · 07/10/2018 16:21

Beetlejuice is a fantastic suggestion.
How about the Craft?

FloofyDoof · 07/10/2018 16:27

Shaun of the Dead?

JustDanceAddict · 07/10/2018 16:28

Coralline

Miladymilord · 07/10/2018 16:29

Blair witch project - are you serious?

Beetlejuice is really nasty in places, I watched it the other day.

Miladymilord · 07/10/2018 16:30

And I loved it when it came out.

The Hole? It's a pg or a 12 but fucking terrifying. If you think Blair witch is suitable then you'll be fine with it.
