To let 10 YO DS watch a horror film?

DS10 has decided he doesn't want to trick or treat this year and wants to stay in and watch a "horror film".

He's seen most of the children's ones like Miss Peregrine, Hotel Transylvanias, The Witches etc.

He'd like to watch something a little more "grown up" but I can't seem to think of any that are suitable, or a 12A.

DH thinks Woman in Black is a good place to start but I was horrified that it's a 12 as I found it really scary and definitely unsuitable for a 10 year old!

What's your favourite mild horror?

Its very hard for this age group. We were looking for something last night as an intro to horror for DS2 (11) but everything is a 15. Gremlins is a 15 and so is the Mummy and Sleepy Hollow. So is Stranger Things for that matter.

Beetlejuice is probably the most appropriate of those mentioned.

Haggisfish · 07/10/2018 16:32

The others?

user187656748 · 07/10/2018 16:36

It isn't a horror but my DSs enjoyed Hocus Pocus when they were 10.

Miladymilord · 07/10/2018 16:37

Cloverfield is too grown up surely? Its a 15.

Monster house is a good shout.
Wallace and gromit and the were rabbit?
Frankenweenie?

Miladymilord · 07/10/2018 16:38

Has anyone that keeps recommending Beetlejuice seen it recently!? It's got loads of swearing, some really scary scenes and the ending is trippy as fuck.

Purplejay · 07/10/2018 16:39

Gremlins is probably your best bet

Vagndidit · 07/10/2018 16:40

DS (10) did ok with Poltergeist last year, but that's about as far as I'd go. I'd stick with more spooky rather than gory type films if you're keen.

ADastardlyThing · 07/10/2018 16:43

Unbreakable?
That other m Knight shamamalamalam one? The village?

DreamALittleDreamOf · 07/10/2018 16:48

I remember watching The Frighteners as a child.

DreamALittleDreamOf · 07/10/2018 16:48

Just seen it's a 15. Sorry!

Duskqueen · 07/10/2018 16:51

What about Hocus Pocus or Beetlejuice? Or an you find some of the old goosebumps? I think they are on Netflix.

Whizbang · 07/10/2018 16:54

Shaun of the Dead? Comedy detracts from the zombie horror. But not Woman in Black! That’s pretty scary...especially as it’s the children of the village who cop it.

Whizbang · 07/10/2018 16:56

Also Fifth Element? Not horror as such but some good aliens and not too scary.

Bubblysqueak · 07/10/2018 16:57

Not a horror but a Dracula film- dead and loving it. Great film.

CaptainKirkssparetupee · 07/10/2018 17:05

John carpenter's Village of the Damned

ihopeyoubitchesareready · 07/10/2018 17:07

ghostbusters
beetlejuice
hocus pocus
edward scissorhands

TSSDNCOP · 07/10/2018 17:12

We saw The House With The Clock In It’s Walls last night. Very jumpy and quite gruesome too.

Lolly86 · 07/10/2018 17:12

Don't know if it counts as a horror exactly...but what about Eight Legged Freaks my little brother loved it at that age 😁

Miladymilord · 07/10/2018 17:59

STOP SAYING BEETLEJUICE

a) you'll summon him
and
b) it's not suitable for a 10 year old

PinkFlamingo888 · 07/10/2018 18:07

How about The Babadook? I did see it as an adult rather than a child but I remember thinking that it wasn’t at all scary, and I am the biggest wimp around!

Miladymilord · 07/10/2018 18:19

The babadook

Shock

Yeah that's a good one op

didyouseetheflaresinthesky · 07/10/2018 18:33

Beetlejuice is fine! It's hardly scary at all.

Drop Dead Fred isn't a horror. I loved Little Monsters at his age and found it not too scary. Poltergeist was a favourite at age 10 so I'd absolutely let him watch that. Or Terminator? I loved that as a kid!

CaptainKirkssparetupee · 07/10/2018 18:34

Little Monsters

The film no one else remembers that monsters inc. copied?

Duskqueen · 07/10/2018 18:44

Also what about Haunted Mansion or Monster Family?

Duskqueen · 07/10/2018 18:44

Or the new Goosebumps, it's a PG.
