"It's just bullshit that you all get "shouted down" by nasty bullies. Total rubbish. Use facts. Use logic. Use reason, if you have any."

I hope you can read this back and see the irony.

Gersemi · 04/10/2018 11:11

This thread has made me feel a lot better about Mumsnet in general. I was hoping that the liberal feminists were, like me, choosing to no longer engage in toxic and fruitless debate with people whose minds will never be changed, and that there were more of us out there. Phew.

This

Djnoun · 04/10/2018 11:17

I know exactly what it means and it's exactly what you are doing. You're attempting to convince people that, rather than their own perception of the situation, which is that they are trying to put across their own views in a calm and logical manner in the aim of having a sensible discussion, actually they're merely putting across controversial statements with the aim of firing up arguments. You are twisting reality to undermine other people. You're gaslighting.

Gersemi · 04/10/2018 11:22

It is NO exaggeration to say that transgenderism if left unchecked, will destroy EVERY right women ever fought for.

Of course it's a massive exaggeration. You only have to think about it for a few seconds to realise that. Transgenderism is going to take away women's rights to the vote, to own property, to see their children after divorce, to contraception, to terminate unwanted pregnancies ...? If you really believe that, you have lost any sense of perspective whatsoever.

But what is a serious threat is precisely that mindset. It's exactly the mindset that any totalitarian state seeks to foster as an excuse to persecute minorities. "Look, the nasty XYZs are taking YOUR jobs and houses and clogging up schools and hospitals". "We can't give any rights to those nasty XYZs because they're trying to take away your rights." "It's fine to persecute XYZs because they're trying to destroy our society". Not in my name, thanks.

GinIsIn · 04/10/2018 11:30

@Gersemi If I could high five you I would. that is EXACTLY it.

Lallypopstick · 04/10/2018 11:38

I do worry for female prisoners and other vulnerable women. Of course I do. But I think the ethos on the FWR board has become so focused on self ID that posters are prepared to throw other vulnerable women and children because they are "politically homeless" and couldn't possibly vote Labour now. They're pleased a few bigoted old Tories agree with them. So what about all the women and children who are living in poverty under a Tory government? Do they not deserve your concern?

They're also more than happy to side with right wing organisations because they're the only ones who agree with the extent of their beliefs. And there are definitely more and more people who have gone from "no self ID" to "no transwomen ever." How is that not transphobia?

RatRolyPoly · 04/10/2018 11:47

As someone who is not a FWR regular, even I can see that the only reason the "what is a woman" question is asked repeatedly is because IT IS NEVER ANSWERED

Oh god, this again? Actually I HAVE answered it. Several times. Don't believe me? You don't even have to use the advanced search function, you can literally Google "RatRolyPoly definition woman mumsnet".

You're welcome.

Am I allowed to give my perspective politely without facing abuse and derision now please? I'll give your a clue; I'm not.

...can't stop picturing adorable hedgehog babies!

NerrSnerr · 04/10/2018 11:48

I don't think that the discussion that happens on the feminist board and beyond (mainly twitter from what I can see) will change much. It seems to me that there are two extreme groups locking horns and fighting it out between each other and neither will back down or come to any agreement.

If we are going to work to keep vulnerable people safe then everyone needs to work together. I think the problem is that there will be people on both sides of the argument who don't care about trans rights or feminism but love the fight and will keep the unpleasantness going.

Wolfiefan · 04/10/2018 11:51

Only came back on to look at more cute animals. Horribly disappointed.
LEM. Hedgehogs? Bats? I love bats.

OrchidInTheSun · 04/10/2018 11:52

You're right it's not. Just wondered why Rat and Dionne are encouraging you all to hide the meany feminists when they're regular fwr posters.

But it's a lovely day and I can't be bothered to argue any more so I shall leave you to it. Smile

GinIsIn · 04/10/2018 11:54

Wait your turn @Wolfiefan - I already asked LEM for puppies!

RatRolyPoly · 04/10/2018 11:54

Just wondered why Rat and Dionne are encouraging you all to hide the meany feminists when they're regular fwr posters

Actually they encouraged ME Grin

DioneTheDiabolist · 04/10/2018 11:55

I'm not encouraging anyone to do anything. And I am certainly not and have never been a FWR regular Orchid.Shock

I'm the wrong kind of feminist you see.GrinGrinGrin

Conseulabananahammock · 04/10/2018 11:55

RatRolyPoly, to address your earlier point about having a place to discuss feminist issues, I think AIBU itself is a great place for that! I've seen lots of good threads with intelligent discussion about a range of women's issues. Occasionally they do get high jacked but I think you get a good quality and range of views on this board and I would be interested to see more feminist threads.

BustyDeLaGhetto · 04/10/2018 12:04

Thank you so much for this. I've just hidden the Feminism topics so fast I've given myself whiplash.

fruitpastille · 04/10/2018 12:05

I've hidden it as well now. To be honest it's not even about agreeing or disagreeing for me. It's just the same things being said over and over again day in day out and I want to have more variety! I think I might hide Brexit for the same reason.

dolorsit · 04/10/2018 12:11

Does active work differently on the app? I've never noticed feminist threads swamping the list. I can only see 4 feminist threads listed.

Anyway thanks for this I'm off to hide pregnancy and pets topics.

DioneTheDiabolist · 04/10/2018 13:27

I've just discovered you can buy hedgehog houses!Shock

StormTreader · 04/10/2018 13:44

I'm SO HAPPY to find that there are other liberal feminists on MN, I really thought it might be just me. @AuntBeastie I agree with everything you've said 100%.

I hid the Feminist topic a few weeks ago after a lot of internal debate with myself because I just couldn't take all the smug "I've just Self-IDed as a pot plant, give me my Feminist points! Hnnr hnnnr hnnnr!" posts any more. It made me so sad because with all the Kavenaugh and Trump stuff going on Feminism and Womens issues have never been more important, but there seems to be nothing left on that board that isn't "I just out-Peak Transed myself! LOL!"

I used to try and speak up against what seemed to be the nasty stuff but I just became a target for abuse. You can't debate anything with people who are already 100% sure they are right and you are wrong, especially when they have a chorus of yes-men behind them - I am not interested in screaming against the tide.

Wolfiefan · 04/10/2018 13:47

Don’t want to wait. Want cute things NOW!!!
Is your turtle a terrapin (don’t know spelling!) Haven’t seen one with quite that colouring.
Tell me it’s not a snapping turtle. Shock

Conseulabananahammock · 04/10/2018 13:49

Haha Wolfie no it's a Mississippi map turtle. Does have a bit where it gets out and spends most of its time on land. They sleep and eat.. and cuddle in the water though Grin

Wolfiefan · 04/10/2018 13:52

Too cute for words. Such pretty markings.

DioneTheDiabolist · 04/10/2018 13:55

Here's the hedgehog house thread Wolfie. www.mumsnet.com/Talk/_chat/3384086-My-first-hedgehog
Maybe that will tide you over.Smile
