Benidorm ...my idea of actual hell

I can't think of anything worse than going to Benidorm.
I go on holiday to have a relaxing holiday away from normal day to day life.
My friend has just gone and every night is just drunken Brit's dancing to sweet Caroline drinking cheap alcohol.
Am I alone in this? I'm only 32 but this is just my idea of hell.

Emperor. No they don’t exclude same sex couples just kids, yay.

EmperorTomatoRetchup · 29/09/2018 15:23

If indeed, they do now allow gay couples to book, then it is well overdue. Sandals definitely had a no gay couples policy until comparatively recently.

WhenIWasAYoungWarthog · 29/09/2018 15:25

I think Sandals is still mixed couples only isn’t it?

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 29/09/2018 15:25

It appears to mean someone I know and like to bitch about online but will pretend to like IRL.

More likely there is no friend and the OP wanted to vent about how much she despises Benidorm.

HemanOrSheRa · 29/09/2018 15:27

I took DS and his friend for a last minute short break in the summer holidays. I was always a bit 'Oof. No. Not for me'. We had a fantastic time! Short flight with good flight times, hotel, beach, old town, walk along the promenade at night - all lovely! I'd like to go back at October half term, when the weather is cooler, so we can do more sightseeing.

glintandglide · 29/09/2018 15:28

I think it’s quite common to slag off places you’ve never been to based on their reputation, but very narrow minded. I bet there are some lovely parts around Benidorm.

HemanOrSheRa · 29/09/2018 15:31

The hotel we stayed in had lots and lots of Spanish families of all ages enjoying their holiday. Lots of Spanish families around the resort too. So I don't think it's true that they hate it, as a PP said.

fieryginger · 29/09/2018 15:35

Yes I agree OP. I know lots of people who go regularly, fair does, glad they have the holiday they want.

tierraJ · 29/09/2018 15:35

It's not for me (too many tower blocks) but I've got very lively distant relatives in their 70s who go in a group every year for the bars & clubs & booze & English food... they are quite old but probably a laugh to socialise with!!

Ucantpo1ishaturd · 29/09/2018 16:30

The Spanish low income Pensioners get a free Two Week stay, I believe it’s to keep the Hotels running in the low Season they love it.

spanishwife · 29/09/2018 17:23

Ok ok when I said 'the Spanish hate it' perhaps my pool was too small. The 'Spanish' from where I live (way over the other side of the country) hate it.

Chocolatecoffeeaddict · 29/09/2018 17:25

It wouldn't be my choice either. I'm 30 and used to love nights out drinking but for the last 5 years at least, there's nothing more unappealing.

Sunnymeg · 29/09/2018 17:41

There is beautiful countryside A couple of miles out of Benidorm. We go there because of the excellent hotels and spend our days in a hire car exploring.

Aspenfrost · 29/09/2018 17:51

I am pleased to say I have never been. Imagine stranding in the flight queue at the airport. The shame! Lol

Aspenfrost · 29/09/2018 17:52

...standing

SoyDora · 29/09/2018 17:54

DH’s parents live about an hour and a half from Benidorm but the nearest airport to both their house and to Benidorm is Alicante. We fly there about 4 times a year, it’s hardly shameful!

BarbaraofSevillle · 29/09/2018 18:04

Lol at the idea of dedicated planes for Benidorm. Great idea though. We go to Spain a lot and I'd pay extra to be able to fly to Mallorca, Tenerife etc on a plane that is free of stags and hens on their way to Magaluf or Las Americas.

spanishwife · 29/09/2018 18:28

I travel to and from a Spanish city to the UK a lot for work and I would also pay extra for a hen and stag free flight. Mostly to avoid delays when police have to come on board to arrest the drunk and disorderly when we land. 5 times and counting.

ConcreteUnderpants · 29/09/2018 21:51

Never fancied Benidorm until I read this thread.
Actually looks like quite an interesting place now if you choose to get out and see things.

I've stayed in San Antonio, Ibiza when my DD was little and loved it. Just because a place has bars and clubs doesn't mean you have to go in them!

GunpowderGelatine · 29/09/2018 22:31

I hated every second. We went on an extended-family holiday there chosen by someone else and I was pregnant so couldn't even drink to numb the pain of how awful it was. The old town (which sadly we didn't discover until our last day) was beautiful though.

BeardedMum · 29/09/2018 22:39

I have been to Benidorm on a day trip and its the worst place I have ever been. Full of Brits drinking in bars at 10 am and just the types of families you usually only see on Jeremy Kyle.

Basecamp65 · 29/09/2018 22:45

My normal holiday is festivals or camping in as much wilderness you can get or city breaks.

Few years ago I was having major work done at home and at last minute decided I could not bear to be at home whilst it was done and booked at 48hrs notice a week in Benidorm. It was my first ever package holiday to sun type resort.

We had an absolute blast - did day trips and I remember swimming under a waterfall, went to a medieval banquet- all sorts of things.

I have never done a package or this type of holiday again but I loved it.

Bimgy85 · 29/09/2018 22:46

@BeardedMum yup it really is. I mean obviously there are regular people and families that go there but the majority is full of loud lager louts drinking their beer with breakfast and the tackiest bars ever. It does Have a beautiful old town however that often gets missed

EmperorTomatoRetchup · 29/09/2018 23:21

I think Sandals is still mixed couples only isn’t it

If this is the case, then I probably would judge people for going there, just as I'd judge folk for going to a resort that had a no blacks or no Jews policy (assuming they were aware of it)

Ucantpo1ishaturd · 30/09/2018 07:26

Benidorm is really pretty just stay away from Levante Beach which is usually full of fat Brits with Tattoos and that’s just the Women 😂
