Benidorm ...my idea of actual hell

I can't think of anything worse than going to Benidorm.
I go on holiday to have a relaxing holiday away from normal day to day life.
My friend has just gone and every night is just drunken Brit's dancing to sweet Caroline drinking cheap alcohol.
Am I alone in this? I'm only 32 but this is just my idea of hell.

Maybe Maui would be a better option for you OP?

I'm with you OP - wild horses could not drag me to Benidorm. Or Magaluf. Or Blackpool. Or indeed any foreign resort where the main selling points are full English breakfasts and ridiculously cheap booze.

Downmarket, tacky and just awful.

Luckily though there is lots of information out there about various resorts and with even 5 minutes googling you can get a feel for the place.

Not my cuppa - so I wouldn’t go
IF I did go ( Hell would freeze over first) I would try my best to enjoy it.
There must be nicer bits a short drive away

I have a friend going very soon . It’s a family event and she is not keen. So I looked at this thread with interest. Thanks to all the posters who posted the stuff about the old town , waterfalls etc. I think she would be interested in those and will pass the information on..

I've always wanted to go to Benidorm because I love the tv show but my Spanish DP refuses point blank to go

You know there are different areas of Benidorm?

Anyway I’ve been. Fucking loved it. Pissed every night. Dancing. Meet loads of mad people. One of my best holidays.

I wouldn't want any holiday where you're thinking "well, I can go to this bit, or that bit, but need to avoid X street and this beach as it'll be full if pissed people and vomit".

Far easier to give Benidorm a massive body swerve and choose somewhere else. It's not like there's a shortage of choice.

Not somewhere I've ever fancied going, but that's just me though. Lots of people love it, as shock horror everybody's different and have different tastes.
I just leave those who love Benidorm to go there and I go to places that I actually do fancy visiting.
Works out well for everyone that way.

I always said the same about Butlins.

Then we went and I really enjoyed it.

I wouldn’t want to go again now, but it was a perfect holiday for that particular time in our lives (little kids who needed lots of entertainment).

I put Benidorm in the same category as Cancun, Las Vegas and Sharm - not my first choice of holiday but I’d go if someone else was paying.

Did you really need to ask? Of course you're not the only person who thinks this – it attracts a very specific audience. You're in the majority.

And I'd say the average age of the people who go there to get drunk on the strip is far below 32 too. More like 21 at most.

I spent October- March there many moons ago. Poniente is really lovely as is the old town and Cala de Finistrat. It wouldn't be my first choice in the summer but if I saw a superb deal in the poniente side I'd take it. There are loads of beautiful places to see from there too.

I know exactly what you mean OP. I decided I didn't fancy toast for breakfast this morning and posted a thread called "Toast is my idea of actual hell" and people got very irate!

I would hate a drinking holiday with loads of full English breakfasts etc. But like others have said all that stuff is usually concentrated into one strip, outside of that is often quite nice.

Ive noticed that some people use the word “friend” strangely on MN. It appears to mean someone I know and like to bitch about online but will pretend to like IRL.

My idea of hell with the kids and DH.... but A girly weekend is a different story.

Places like Benidorm make Spain seem like a culture-less hell hole that only exists for cheap beers and beaches. The Spanish hate it of course.

It's not a part of Spain I would choose to visit, but I know plenty of people who go regularly and absolutely love it. Different people enjoy different things, and if your friend chooses to spend her precious annual leave doing something she enjoys, what does it matter?

I've been to Benidorm. It's cheap, good beach, easy to get to from regional airports, reliable weather. No idea where this wild nightlife takes place, not the end we were. Personally I find beach holidays in the middle of nowhere boring and I get cabin fever. For quiet and solitude I prefer Scotland/ British countryside. I also like different types of holiday and places so mountains etc. We're all different it makes us neither better or worse than others.

When I went it was mainly Spanish pensioners there. You must mean a different benidorm or you've never been to Wolverhampton

I have a friend who went and hated it with a passion.

She phoned me from the basement of a tower block where she had gotten trapped in the swimming pool. No idea what she thought I could do for her.Funny though.

I don't fancy it myself, but getting drunk and singing Sweet Caroline IS fun. Once or twice in a life.
