FFS! What is wrong with some people And a £15 toilet pass. Misogyny and sex discrimination.

Two staff members also asked her what action the doctor was going to take to lighten her doctors flow.

Im absolutely furious reading this Im sorry if there already is a thread. I couldnt see one.

Don't be silly, smiling, they can't make it to McDonald's and back if they also go to the toilet. I'm often asked if someone can go out at the start of the first class after break and lunch. Somehow I had to fit it in while working all lunchtime and getting stuff out for their class.
(Obviously this is different to the urgent requests, but there are a lot of can't be arsed requests too)

smilingontheinside · 30/09/2018 19:55

Hell we would never have dare ask and it's stood me in good stead throughout working life. I'm very old now I can't hang on quite so long as I used to but still wait for break/lunch times even though I could go any time. Same on journeys we went before we left maybe one stop enroute and that was a whole days driving down to Cornwall Shock. Oh and we weren't allowed off school site at beeak/lunch unless had permission to go home for lunch which I did and walked home and back everyday gave me about 10 mins at home to eat lunch Grin

Fowles94 · 30/09/2018 20:22

I'm sorry but you would just walk out of someone said no.

"This thread loses any credibility with that misleading title! Do you work for The Sun? You should!"

Do you work for Hastings Academy? You should.

Beesandfrogsandfleas, congratulations on managing to get all of that accomplished during your lunch time.

Is there normally a long line of teachers outside the staff loos, waiting their turn?

Or do you pull rank and get to skip to the top of the line in the girls' loos?

Spanglylycra · 30/09/2018 20:35

The poor girl. Whoever thought this was a good idea needs to wake up. And as for going to the doctors for a note I am sure they would appreciate that not like they aren't busy...

BlackberryandNettle · 30/09/2018 20:37

I remember aged 5, hovering around with arm up to ask a teacher whether I could go to the toilet, then running off down the corridor to make it in time (for a no2!). She screamed at me twice not to run so I walked but didn't make it in time. Came back to class and reported accident to teacher - she actually said 'you should have run'. I'm just stared right at her in astonishment - I still remember the injustice off it. But lesson learned early - if in doubt, just up and go when you need to!

BlackberryandNettle · 30/09/2018 20:38

Excuse the typos!

HelenaDove · 30/09/2018 20:45

Blackberry So you learnt about gaslighting that day too. Though at that age you wouldnt have known it had a name.

Back in may day if you need the toilet, you asked to be excused and went. Not letting a child go to the toilet is neglecting their basic needs. If this child hadevelopment gone through this at home and had reported it to a teacher, it would be a safeguarding concern wtf!

daisyrosie · 30/09/2018 22:18

This is terrible! I remember when I was at school having to ask to leave the lesson to go to the toilet, to stop people from getting out of lessons without permission, but the teachers were sensible and girls over the age of 10 were never questioned if they asked to go.
Teachers have a duty of care towards their students and should be reminded of that in situations like this.

Beesandfrogsandfleas · 30/09/2018 22:22

mathanxiety we've got lots of toilets for students. There's a set just along the corridor from me so I see them at lunchtime, never a queue at all.

Markymark20 · 30/09/2018 23:14

So
a) the £15 was NOT for a toilet pass but a Doctors certificate
b) it is the parents job to make sure a child is ready prepared for their first period, with knowledge and products

If the girl had discretely told a female staff member of her predicament they would have helped

yumyumpoppycat · 30/09/2018 23:30

Have you ever used sanitary products markymark?? If they are not in place properly they leak - if the period is unexpectedly heavy they leak. this can happen to women experienced in their use and no doubt it can also happen to 11 year olds.

yumyumpoppycat · 30/09/2018 23:32

Also how do you discretely tell your teacher of your predicament in front of 30 other children?

HelenaDove · 30/09/2018 23:39

Having to pay £15 for a doctors certificate just because you have a period is sex discrimination.

If this was a workplace they would be gazing down the wrong end of a lawsuit.

HelenaDove · 30/09/2018 23:49

I bet Marky also comes out with little gems like periods and pregnancy are NOT an illness when it suits his agenda.

I feel very sorry that this has happened to your daughter. It feels that Hastings Academy has lost sight got of any caring responsibilities and seems not to have proper leadership. Having a period isn’t an illness but it can at times be painful, inconvenient and downright bloody EVERY month for years and years! Let’s not create more problems our girls and young women in this country.

I went to single sex girls schools and can still remember the embarrassment when my period started early one month and I was unprepared. Can’t imagine what it would have felt like in a mixed sex school.

Hugs and flowers to you and your daughter. 🌺😊✅

Oliversmumsarmy · 01/10/2018 03:26

Marky

The cost of the toilet pass is £15. The fact that drs charge the £15 and then you can get a toilet pass means to get one it will have cost £15.

As for asking for help. The Impression given was she did but
No toilet pass no leaving the classroom. No exceptions.

Lolly59 · 01/10/2018 04:57

I remember coming on in French class at school. I knew it had soaked through my clothes and was too embarrassed to stand up. Waited til just my friend and I were left in class and wrapped a cardy round my waist. I'm 59 now and still remember how excruciating it was. Poor girl. As if she wasn't distraught enough!

Willow2017 · 01/10/2018 07:27

it is the parents job to make sure a child is ready prepared for their first period, with knowledge and products

Not much use if you leak through your sanpro and the teacher wont let you go to the loo is it?
Adults have to deal with flooding through which is something you cant prepare for how can an 11yr old 'prepare'?

Why should a girl have to pay £15 for a dr certificate for a normal body function?

And if you are so convinced that a teacher would have 'helped' why did they tell the mum to have her daughter medicated to interfere with her natural body function at 11yrs old when she is just starting periods and her body is just starting to produce hormones? Not exactly helpful is it? Would you put your daughter on meds that interfered with her natural hormone production at 11?

She asked to go to the loo. Teacher said no. Not many 11yr olds would have the confidence to ask again in front of a class.

Gersemi · 01/10/2018 07:49

the £15 was NOT for a toilet pass but a Doctors certificate

What is the difference, MarkyMark? At this school you can't get a toilet pass without a doctor's certificate, so it costs £15 to get one. And, if you think about it, it's completely pointless. All that a doctor can tell the school is that this child gets periods and that she should be allowed to go to the toilet to sort them out - which they know already. It doesn't take a medical degree to work that one out.

PhilomenaButterfly · 01/10/2018 08:02

I hope I've provided everything for DD in case she starts her first period at school: a pencil case filled with 2 sanitary towels, 2 pairs of knickers, hand wipes and hand gel. All academic if they won't let her out of the fucking classroom.

JuJu2017 · 01/10/2018 08:06

This was an issue when I was at school. There was a no toilet break during lesson policy that everyone had to adhere to. The only time you got excused on your period was if you had a medical letter about heavy flow or if you leaked through in class. It’s disgusting.

syskywalker · 01/10/2018 08:59

I feel moms should pick up their kids while free bleeding to make a point!

This is not just sex discrimination pretty sure it’s somewhere in the human rights act to have free access to a toilet, even prisoners of war have that right!
