FFS! What is wrong with some people And a £15 toilet pass. Misogyny and sex discrimination.

Two staff members also asked her what action the doctor was going to take to lighten her doctors flow.

Im absolutely furious reading this Im sorry if there already is a thread. I couldnt see one.

Horrific. Can you imagine that happening in the work place? There would be heads rolling. Why can't kids in school be treated like humans. I would pull my kid out of school if that happened.

nellieellie · 01/10/2018 10:02

Horrid. I’d say it’s indirect sex discrimination too. Teenage girls will need to use loo more frequently and their need will be more unpredictable due to menstruation, than the need of boys. Therefore requirement to pay £15 for the privilege is discriminatory.
But, can’t believe that female members of staff did not let a girl experiencing her first period go to the loo! Horrid! Had I been the parent, I’d have marched down the school the next day. Poor girl, it’s just inhuman.

MrsPeel · 01/10/2018 11:06

Imagine that happening in the work place AllTakenSoRubbishUsername ? Google Amazon warehouse and urine in a bottle and you will find it already does - no doubt the school are just preparing the children for the world of work :(

dysongirl · 02/10/2018 13:29

Disgraceful attitude from the female teachers

PhilomenaButterfly · 02/10/2018 14:40

This thread prompted me to ask the girl taking me on a secondary school tour today, when she was explaining the toilet rules: "How do they handle periods?" I never thought I'd have to consider that.

SnuggyBuggy · 02/10/2018 15:27

It's grim that it's something mums of DDs have to even think about

Satsumaeater · 02/10/2018 15:38

It does happen in (some) call centres doesn't it? But at least you can choose to work somewhere else (hopefully).

ethelfleda · 02/10/2018 16:05

it is the parents job to make sure a child is ready prepared for their first period, with knowledge and products

There’s always one Hmm

Let me spell this out for you - in this instance, the blame lies COMPLETELY with the school. No looking for blame elsewhere.

LakieLady · 02/10/2018 16:42

I now understand why a colleague was so adamant that her daughter was NOT going to Hastings Academy and that she would give up work and home educate if that was the only school where she could get a place.

She got a place at a single-sex school, where hopefully their attitude to periods is a little more enlightened.

blueskiesandforests · 02/10/2018 17:13

What did she answer Philomena ?

PhilomenaButterfly · 02/10/2018 17:14

She said that you ask for an emergency pass.

RowenaDedalus · 02/10/2018 17:39

Usually girls ask me if they can go to the toilet but it’s obvious that they need to go because they are holding on to their bag still. I don’t really like students to go to the toilet when it’s straight after lunch or break, but I am pretty lenient and if you’re a girl I always let you go.
I had to take my class to an assembly but was bleeding heavily down my legs. Took them to assembly and rushed to the loo. Got a telling off from the Head afterwards for not staying with my class. He didn’t know where to look when I said it was that or a puddle of blood on the floor. So I appreciate that students have this issue too- especially when they’re new to the problem!

Giantcatbear · 03/10/2018 13:47

Fuck sake, schools are awful places.

I remember starting my period. The first one was very light, but the second one was horrendous. It arrived unexpectedly about two months after the first and I was in terrible pain overnight and woke up covered in blood to the extent that mum had to bin my pajamas. Lord knows what would have happened if it had happened at school! It was really scary and I was also ashamed at having made a mess. We should be doing all we can to normalise periods and not making children feel like their bodies and natural functions are freakish and wrong. That's almost as important as whatever bullshit she would have missing in the lesson while she used the loo.

Jacmax · 03/10/2018 16:55

Secondary teacher here.

Our toilets are locked during and in-between lessons. Unless a child has a medical condition I am aware of the answer is no.

Girls do try the period card.

SnuggyBuggy · 03/10/2018 16:57

What if someone had a sudden stomach bug? I wouldn't send my child to a school that did that

Jacmax · 03/10/2018 17:01

SnuggyBuggy

On the rare occasion a child is ill, I will write a note. Then then go to reception to collect key.

SnuggyBuggy · 03/10/2018 17:02

I don't know if you have ever had a stomach bug but I generally don't find I have time to negotiate and go somewhere for a key.

Jacmax · 03/10/2018 17:05

Out of my hands. Even if I wanted to let them go, the loos are locked.

SnuggyBuggy · 03/10/2018 17:07

Sounds horrible. It would be very humiliating not to be able to access a toilet in an urgent situation especially in front of your classmates.

Topseyt · 03/10/2018 17:22

I think it is appalling that some schools lock the toilets during and between lessons.

Secondary schools often have around 1,500 students plus staff. One near us has 3,000 students. How on earth do they think they can guarantee that not one person there will have a sudden and urgent need to go to the toilet?

Topseyt · 03/10/2018 17:23

And are those schools sure that what they are doing isn't illegal?

Jacmax · 03/10/2018 17:29

Topseyt
To be fair they can go at 8.50,10.40, 12.35 and school finishes at 3.20.

I just refuse if they ask in lesson.

Poppylizzyrose · 03/10/2018 17:40

Jesus is this U.K. or America?

Aeroflotgirl · 03/10/2018 17:51

It is awful that access to a toilet which is a basic human right is denied. Good thing I went to school in the days where we were free to use the toilet when needed.

Neshoma · 03/10/2018 18:00

Our toilets are locked during and in-between lessons.

Unfortunately kids do congregate in the toilets , often up to no-good. And it can be hiding place when they should be in lessons.

Perhaps some parents should ensure their children go to lessons instead.
