Could there be a 2nd referendum or is it too late?

I hope so. Fingers crossed x

AnalUnicorn · 26/09/2018 23:31

It would be a travesty to re run the in/out referendum. The decision was made in the last referendum.

Disabrie22 · 26/09/2018 23:56

I wish it were so - this is the problem with having a weak opposition. We now have a self induced crisis with no politician brave enough to call and out and out revolution.

Disabrie22 · 26/09/2018 23:56

There should never have been a referendum in the first place.

EwItsAHooman · 26/09/2018 23:59

Personally I think there should be a second vote along the lines of "here is the deal we've negotiated, with this in mind do you still want to leave - yes or no?"

It'll never happen though and even if it did, would the EU even have us back or would they tell us to carry on fucking off like we originally intended?

BlackForestCake · 27/09/2018 00:11

All the noises I have heard have been to the effect that we could cancel Brexit in a heartbeat with the political will. Being in the EU is determined by political will more than anything else. That is why Britain already had all sorts of special arrangements (not being in Schengen or the Euro, etc.), and why the countries who joined in 2004 could do so without technically meeting all the conditions for membership.

EwItsAHooman · 27/09/2018 00:17

They'd never take us seriously though, would they? No matter what the outcome it's utterly embarrassing that it's turned into such a farce when they've had a year and a half to get their act together.

Theresa May will be gone within six months, resigned or forced out, I think most likely forced out. I feel bad for her in a way, she was handed a poisoned chalice and no matter which way she jumps she's going to piss of a large chunk of the electorate, but she's so wishy washy and comes across as being completely out of her depth.

Lalliella · 27/09/2018 00:19

We haven’t left yet so it isn’t a case of having us back. Article 50 can still be revoked, and we can carry on as members of the EU under the same terms and with the same opt-outs as we had before. It’s not too late for a second vote, but we’d have to know what the deal is first so we’d know what we’re voting about, otherwise it would be just based on lies and assumptions like last time. That is, if there is a deal of course. If not the vote should be - crash out without a deal or remain.

There’s plenty of time to organise a vote - remember the 2017 general election, that was done pretty quickly and it wasn't just about a single issue.

Twinning1 · 27/09/2018 00:26

If there was another vote, I’d still vote for brexit. You can’t just keep asking the question until you get the answer you want. It’s like my four year old “please mummy can I have more chocolate”... nope so he asks the question again and again. Most people wanted out when were asked, just got to live with it now. Imagine if we started asking for extra votes for who was in government everytime we didn’t agree with one of their policies or one of their promises didn’t come true. Madness!

puzzledlady · 27/09/2018 00:28

When will the asking for a second third fourth vote stop then? Till we make who happy?

5Yearplan4000 · 27/09/2018 00:29

There’s another thread on this. A second vote won’t happen on an in-out basis at all, and is also very unlikely on a deal/no deal basis.

ManyCrisps · 27/09/2018 00:29

It’s wrong as it would go against democracy the only vote should be on the terms of the leave deal and there should be no option to remain if we want our democracy taken seriously.

Katinkka · 27/09/2018 00:31

Ffs. Isn’t there a separate area for this shite?

5Yearplan4000 · 27/09/2018 00:35

I actually didn’t vote last time (was away) but I would make sure I voted out if there was a fresh vote.

And I’m not an “decrepit old racist” either - im mod career, masters degree educated, professional job, live in a successful urban area, socially liberal, pro equal and gay rights, have friends all over the world, etc.

There are so many inaccurate tropes going around about what leave voters are like.

TheSageofOnions · 27/09/2018 00:49

What happens if it comes up with the same result? Do we go to a third? It's a dumb idea.

Aintnothingbutaheartache · 27/09/2018 01:12

I find it hard to understand anyone who says that they would vote out again given the opportunity.
Can anyone explain to me why leaving the EU is a good thing?

Aintnothingbutaheartache · 27/09/2018 01:38

Why does everyone go silent when asked to give reasons why leaving the EU is a good move?

Aintnothingbutaheartache · 27/09/2018 01:41

It’s a simple enough question and I’m genuinely interested to hear the Brexit point of view

If, you still find it hard to understand and have done since June 2016, then I don’t think you’re genuinely interested in ‘why’ at all, I think you sound rather close-minded and quite condescending.

As for the thread, if there was another referendum, I’d like if ‘leave’ got a higher percentage than last time. Apoplectic wouldn’t cover some of the reactions faced online.

CaptainCorrigan · 27/09/2018 07:09

No. Perhaps people should have researched exactly what they were voting for.

It's like saying 'I set fire to my stuff but I didn't realise ALL my stuff would burn'.

Neshoma · 27/09/2018 08:19

I can see why people in the south would want to stay in the EU. They have a nice life and don't want to change it.

Come up North to see why people voted Out.

boymuma · 27/09/2018 08:28

We had the first referendum on 1975 and we entered the eu. Why can't we have a third?

indistinct · 27/09/2018 14:56

@Twinning1 and other posters saying they'd still vote out.

Why would you still vote leave if another referendum was presented including a remain option. It seems clear that no-deal would be disastrous for the country in the short and medium term and there's no clear justification for thinking it would be better for the country in the long term. JRM himself (a keen Brexit advocate) said it would take 50 years before Brexit proved to be beneficial - why it would be beneficial in that timeframe isn't clear but that's a whole generation or 2 of UK DCs consigned to a poorer more restricted future. The Chequers deal isn't viable, Canada deals would be v. economically damaging and don't resolve the N. Ireland border issue, only EEA/EFTA+CU would be workable but would still be damaging and we'd still be subject to most EU regulations etc (inc. FOM) without a say in setting them. Given this, why would you still support Brexit? What is so bad about the EU that you'd be willing to give UK DCs poorer economic and life prospects?

Hillarious · 27/09/2018 16:02

The great British public can't even choose the right winner on the X Factor, so a referendum was the worst idea ever. It's all about in-party fighting and personal promotion, and nothing to do with what's good for the country.

ilovemylurcher · 27/09/2018 16:14

Neshoma- what do you mean?
I live in the south and voted remain but I am genuinely interested in what is different in the north which means Brexit is a good idea.
