Mine wants to get a pet snake. I'm really not keen on the idea, but they don't see a problem as it'll be in their room. Thoughts please.

I would not mind but then I like snakes ( though I have never owned one) but I would be more concerned about what happens to it when DC gets fed up with it in a few weeks / months / years time .. . . . .. . .As PP have said it may be a issue if when DC moves out / goes to Uni it can not go with them. Has DC ever had sole responsibility of any other pet ? . .. . How did that go ? . . . .How about they see if they can help out at a re homing centre/ zoo / pet shop where they can fulfil the pleasure of handling a snake and learn about them before making a commitment.. . . . . . . . . . ODD my next line down button is not working on this page either

My 18 year old has recently announced he’s getting a snake. He was told, in no uncertain terms, that would not be happening! We have compromised on a lizard.

2BorNot2Bvocal · 24/09/2018 21:03

No. No snakes. Maybe tropical fish?

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 24/09/2018 21:05

My house, my rules.

Nanny0gg · 24/09/2018 21:06

You always end up looking after them when they move out as landlords/halls won't take pets. And isn't it unkind to keep a five foot snake in a tank?

callmeadoctor · 24/09/2018 21:07

God no, happened to us. Guess who felt sorry for it so fed it and cleaned it etc. I f**n hated it! Eventually we rehomed it to a rescue place and told ds that it had died. (I felt bad but he didn't particularly)

Mum2jenny · 24/09/2018 21:08

I don't mind looking after my ds's snake. It's quite easy. Fresh water every other day and feed him every 5-7 days. However ds does quite a lot of the snakes care.

Quartz2208 · 24/09/2018 21:10

I was all prepared to say of course they should be allowed to - but no would not want a snake in my house

butlerswharf · 24/09/2018 21:11

Nope! I thought you were going to be talking about decorating. But a snake, no way!

Honeyroar · 24/09/2018 21:14

Are they likely to be going off to uni in the near future? I wouldn't "let" an adult child get a pet until they were relatively stable in their own home. From 16-30 their life can change around so much, which is probably the average lifespan of a pet.

iklboo · 24/09/2018 21:14

We've already got a snake so it'd be fine for us. It wouldn't be an issue taking it on if DS couldn't take it with him (he's only 12 at the minute so not an issue)

Rudgie47 · 24/09/2018 21:14

No way, I really don't like them.No snakes, spiders, reptiles anything like that.

EdisonLightBulb · 24/09/2018 21:15

No chance

puzzledlady · 24/09/2018 21:16

Nightwatch999 · 24/09/2018 21:16

Grumpbum123 · 24/09/2018 21:16

Yes, their an adult but then I bought my 7 yr old one despite not - at that point liking them

Dontsweatthelittlestuff · 24/09/2018 21:17

I rarely go in my adult children’s rooms but would still say no.

VioletCharlotte · 24/09/2018 21:20

Not a chance would I let either of my late teen DC get a snake! No way. I can't stand the things. Hamster possibly. Or a goldfish. But no snakes Shock

RedPandaMama · 24/09/2018 21:22

My ex boyfriend had a pet snake. It disappeared and was never found and a few days later their cat of 10 years also disappeared. I like snakes and have even paid to do a snake feeding and holding experience but wouldnt have one in the house.

nokidshere · 24/09/2018 21:25

No. No pets in my house. Ever

nokidshere · 24/09/2018 21:26

No. No pets in my house. Ever

Chillyegg · 24/09/2018 21:26

Christ no! I wouldn’t even be able to come in the house knowing it was in their room!! They aren’t pets in my opinion. And I’m terrified of them so it would be a big fat no

foodiefil · 24/09/2018 21:28

Never in a million billion years

pallisers · 24/09/2018 21:28

No way. Actually No is too small a word for how big my refusal would be. Blanket no to snakes/rats/guinea pigs/cats/hamsters etc. but even if I liked snakes, no one who lives in my house will be getting any pet that could potentially end up as my responsibility (I already have the dog they begged for and who is pretty much 100 percent my responsibility - I don't mind him though.)
