Mine wants to get a pet snake. I'm really not keen on the idea, but they don't see a problem as it'll be in their room. Thoughts please.

Ew, no I wouldn't. I know someone who's pet snake escaped. It was never found Shock

DolorestheNewt · 24/09/2018 20:20

Crikey, I thought this was going to be about painting the walls black or something! No, OP, I wouldn't be happy to have a creature that could escape unless it was one that I quite liked the idea of myself. No snakes, no spiders. It may be his room, but it's in my house.

StacksOfBoxes · 24/09/2018 20:20

I thought you meant decoration, and came on here to say yes. But I would draw the line at a pet snake. No way!

I have all of my adult ds’s at home atm and no way on God’s Earth would I have a fucking snake in thd house, ever!

PhilomenaButterfly · 24/09/2018 20:22

Yes, but then I like snakes.

Fairylea · 24/09/2018 20:23

I think a pet is something different - I was expecting decoration. A pet is everyone’s responsibility in the home really so it would be a no from me!

Ellieboolou27 · 24/09/2018 20:23

No no no, not that I hate snakes but I would not want one in my house, nor spiders but I’d be ok with a rat Grin

upsideup · 24/09/2018 20:23

I would let my adult dd get a snake if it was in her room and she did all the caring for it, same with my younger children but I don't mind snakes.

HollowTalk · 24/09/2018 20:23

No. It's your house and if you don't want a snake in it, that's the end of it.

HollowTalk · 24/09/2018 20:24

Your adult child needs to get their own place so that they're free to do what they want.

WeShouldBeFriends · 24/09/2018 20:25

I was going to say if it's legal it'd be okay with me but actually no, not a snake!

DorothyGarrod · 24/09/2018 20:25

No. The people that run the house get the say on stuff like that. It can be an incentive for them to move out!

Junkmail · 24/09/2018 20:26

I don’t see the harm? This is an adult child right? So it’s going to be their sole responsibility financially and from a care standpoint. Changes are you won’t even know it’s in the house. Vivariums are lockable. Snakes are clean, don’t smell, don’t make noise. It could be a lot worse.

LegoPiecesEverywhere · 24/09/2018 20:26

No way. I don’t like snakes but also is it not very cruel to keep a snake in a cage in a bedroom?

MaryandMichael · 24/09/2018 20:26

Your house, your rules. In my house, no snakes.

WakeUpSlow · 24/09/2018 20:27

They'll be wanting to keep frozen mice in the freezer as well.

Batteriesallgone · 24/09/2018 20:27

Adult - no. They have the choice to move out. Teen or vulnerable adult with no choice to live elsewhere, I would probably allow more leeway. I’d let them get a snake as I love snakes but that’s not the point (I think) so let’s say a spider NO NO FUCKING NO WAY would anyone keep a pet spider in my house.

Claw001 · 24/09/2018 20:28

No pets are for when they get their own place.

serbska · 24/09/2018 20:29

Pet snake that they will pay for and look after and I wouldn’t ever have to even go into their room? Nice adult son/daughter that is generally a pleasure to live with and pulls their weight? Yes no problem.

shirleyschmidt · 24/09/2018 20:32

Hell no! A hamster maybe

HavelockVetinari · 24/09/2018 20:34

If the adult DC is generally responsible, clean and tidy I'd say yes - snakes do smell a bit, but can be super stinky if not looked after meticulously. However, It's your house, so your rules. What about when he/she wants to leave home and can't get a rental that allows pets?

Singlenotsingle · 24/09/2018 20:35

That's fine. I've got a snake in my lounge. I like snakes.

Aprilshowersnowastorm · 24/09/2018 20:35

My ds had a snake, he was lovely. Then my ds had 2 snakes. Then I got a message to say he had bought an iguana that could grow to 7 feet long. Allow the snake op on the understanding it's a lone reptile. Honestly snakes are great. Ds got one for his second birthday, Elvis is now 8!!

TheRoadLessRocky · 24/09/2018 20:36

It doesn't matter if they think it's okay, it's your house and you have the final say. If they don't like the rules of the house they can move out.
