I’m really loving the homemade Christmas gifts thread, and am watching it for inspiration. Can we start one for ideas for things to avoid - ie glitter-encrusted his&hers champagne flutes.

Yes.

Unless they are all really good actors everyone loved the home-made jam I gave them the other year. One TA came over specially to say how lovely it was so I really don't think she was being polite.

It just proves you can't please all the people all the time. I've given home made giant cookies with the teacher's name written on in chocolate. They mostly seemed to go down well. But according to my daughter one teacher took a bite and then threw it away. Not sure if true but if it was it was really rude and unnecessary to do that in front of my daughter. Plus, my cookies are delicious according to everyone else.

Whatever you do someone will whinge. Buy something, 'it's the same old mass produced crap no effort or thought went into it. ' Make something, 'it's cheap home-made tat.'

It always makes me a bit sad when I see all the best teacher gifts in charity shops. Especially with the tags still on. I hope the teachers who get rid of their gifts like this choose charity shops away from their home town.

@tinttemper - I can’t be dealing with that smug bastard elf! So glad it wasn’t a thing when my kids where little. It’s just the look on it’s face...
@reanimatedSGB - it is nesting season here in Australia and the birds we call magpies are nothing like the Northern Hemisphere counterparts. They’re more like flying velociraptors. They swoop and go for eyeballs, pecking kids and old people, attacking cyclists (might revel in occasional schadenfreude when I hear stories about that...) They genuinely cause incidents causing cuts requiring stitches... vicious feathery bastards. More to the point, my dog - who weighs 43kgs - can not go outside to wee without being swooped by these feathery squawking fiends and is terrified!!! So my son and I are standing guard with a nerf gun. (My husband is giggling and threatening to video this.) Should I ever hit one, I will post it to you!!! (There is no danger, I promise. I have been trying to hit my husband as well.)

A few years ago, the children in Reception at my friends school all made the very useful and pretty gift of a painted smooth pebble lovingly and carefully gathered by their teacher the previous summer - and equally lovingly and carefully painted by the kids with the word KEY on them. They were apparently for their mums to put outside their front doors .
How neat is that?GrinGrinGrin
Just needed a black mask and a sack marked SWAG, really.Kids loved them, tho. Parents perhaps not so much. Seems there were tears (from kids) and tantrums (from exasperated mums as they refused to use them).
GrinGrinGrin Thanks for the thread,OP, I'd forgotten that!

@tinytemper66, I very much like that spider.

FishCanFly · 26/10/2018 14:38

basically any amateurish arts&crafts. Its cool that you have a hobby that you enjoy, but please contain it to your own house

florafawna · 26/10/2018 14:39

Shitty homemade gifts or shitty bought gifts? What a dilemma Grin

FishCanFly · 26/10/2018 14:46

Shitty homemade gifts or shitty bought gifts? What a dilemma

Shitty bought gifts - they can be donated or cheekily regifted
But homemade - they are often personalized and can't be really passed on

wobblywindows · 27/10/2018 13:21

Not strictly home made- but a Lottery ticket or scratchcard in a card. No, no , no! Even unused. I might make an exception if it's been scratched and a winner, but even then I'd worry how many you bought to get a winning ticket.

Zucker · 04/11/2018 12:25

Why are people paying someone on facebook for all that elf tat when it's available in almost every pound shop for a quid a piece!

ConciseandNice · 04/11/2018 12:28

So now I’ve fallen in love with rat taxidermy gifts. F@ck me. My darling husband will lose his mind!!!

Also I love homemade tat. I’ve got terrible tat that was made for me 20 years ago, treasured in a box. Seriously. Love. It.
