to think our children will not forgive us if we don't sort Brexit out

DFiL voted Leave. He's not thick and he had his reasons but, to be frank, he's 80 and not going to have to live with the consequences long term. Especially, if the NHS don't manage to stockpile his multiple medications in the event of a No Deal.

AIBU to think we all need to kick up an almighty stink to ensure that our Government makes a deal that will protect our children's futures - even if that means remaining. Jacob Rees Mogg and his ERG buddies predict it could be 50 years for the UK to see the benefits of leaving the EU. That's too late for my DD.

Austerity has damaged enough lives, we can't let Brexit do more harm. It's no good shrugging and saying "Leave won". If this isn't sorted out there will be no winners.

I am in Ireland and a lot of the stuff we see is incredible between people who are uneducated (don't know the basics and even difference between NI vs ROI) and down right ignorant

Uneducated people can and do educate themselves. Starting by asking questions - maybe of many people - and analysing the answers as best they can.

Deliberately ignorant people don't bother. They could find out or educate themselves. But don't bother. Best avoided where possible, and certainly best kept away from power.

At Uni I shared a house with a guy from NI (Ballycastle) and discovered how little I actually knew about anything in NI - or RoI. Despite it being "on the news" almost daily.

DGRossetti · 26/09/2018 14:47

Also Moggs is suiting himself. All of his interests (and his buddies) have been moved to the republic ages ago

Maybe he should follow his own money, and settle in Ireland. I'm sure he'd be warmly welcomed. You could probably build an "old times theme park" around him.

Helmetbymidnight · 26/09/2018 14:51

Ooh Ilovewhippets, how nice of you to say.

I've never ever reacted badly to any Leave voter with reasoned arguments.

That would be both of them, then ? Grin

LeeleeD88 · 26/09/2018 15:08

@DGRossetti you can keep Moggs, we don't need him. We have our own gowls here, and enough of them.

I never mind the people who educate themselves, its the ones who go on to do TV interviews and say 'Ireland should lump it' in reference to we should just allow the UK to do whatever they want to our country and boarders. The aul witch will probably pop her clogs soon, hopefully for everyone.

You see I didn't realise - and I'm guessing 80+% of English people don't the entire reason behind the p IRA, the Special Bs, and protestants blocking access to fire engines so that Catholic buildings and businesses could burn. And that's in my lifetime - living memory Sad

DF had a lot of Irish friends (well, customers as well). Funny how minorities flock together.

(With reference to another ongoing thread, it was my housemate who finally connected my spelling and pronunciation of "Siobhan" Blush )

Thanks for that. Looks like I end the day knowing one more thing than when I woke up. More people should try it.

If you're just an ordinary person, who doesn't give a fuck about any of the above, and who just wants less immigration, less wage suppression, less competition for jobs, less pressure on the housing market, less pressure on health services, primary schools and infrastructure, then Brexit will not be a disaster.

The curious thing about posts like this is that they assume that things cannot get worse. In particular, they confidently assume that Britain will always be reasonably prosperous and that they (and/or their children) will never be the ones wishing they could leave to try their luck in other countries because sterling is so devalued and our public services have deteriorated to such an extent that the young would be better off as migrant workers earning in a strong currency outside the UK and remitting their earnings home.

Some of these leavers should read some history and weep. And not just British history. Understand what is meant by hubris.

LeeleeD88 · 26/09/2018 15:40

@DGRossetti what i believe the problem is, is that in Ireland this makes up alot of our history lessons because we believe it is relevant. And, you would believe because it is a shared history, that it would be equally well covered in the UK. Now. Problem is here, do you really think someone is gonna teach the history where it shows so many crimes and so much oppression? I don't believe this is fully the reason, but definitely part of it.

Also, you are most welcome. Gowl is such a wonderful word. Pronounced like the word fowl. Grin

All I know is, over the course of my recollection of the troubles on the mainland (1974ish onwards) up to the GFA, I would posit that the sum total knowledge of the average English person about the NI situation increased by the square root of fuck all. Which becomes more noticeable when you pick up bits and pieces as I was, and realise that no one else has bothered to find out.

Now that sort of head-in-sand ignorance might be appropriate when discussing the death of stars, or minutia of quantum mechanics. But it's a little harder to comprehend when one of the outcomes of the situation you are ignored might just blow you to kingdom come.

(and just a nod that despite people glibly assuming "the Troubles" are history, notice that even today, the Birmingham Pub bombings - 1974 - are back in the news).

bridgetoc · 26/09/2018 15:55

The remoaners scare tactics really are an embarassment. Project fear is over and it's time to get a grip.

In the absence of my unicorn arriving any time soon, I think our children will have every reason to put us all to the sword over this. The government resembles a clown car driven by Voldemort. The opposition is a vacuous cloud of anti-semitic shit that hasn't got a fucking clue (still behind this atrocious government in the polls), and Corbyn is all for Brexit anyway.

Our children's future has been sold so that racist pensioners (my parents included) can feel good about themselves (freely admitted - why otherwise be unhappy with brown faces, foreign speaking foreigners, but still want those nice white people from our former colonies). But as PPs have pointed out they're not going to live as long when there'll be far fewer care workers, and less medicine, and less NHS when the huge fucking hole in government finances (caused by the loss of the motor industry and other manufacturing, and most of financial services in the City) really start to hit. Those who voted for this because they were disillusioned with austerity haven't seen anything yet.

Collaborate · 26/09/2018 16:15

@bridgetoc Do tell us what sector of the economy you currently occupy. Please. I've been listening to the experts tell us how they think it's going to turn out. You've just been listening to Fox, Johnston, Davies, Farage, Rees-Mogg and all the other incompetent fuckwits. And you believed them. Fuck this is so depressing.

1tisILeClerc · 26/09/2018 16:29

{It sounds everything shit post Brexit will be blamed on the EU rather than, say, the people who voted Brexit.}
Like the children's rhyme 'sticks and stones may break my bones',,, that'll be an extra 50 Euros please.
Too many of the English (particularly) are convinced they are the great 'I am', to which the rest of the world will reply 'you are the great what'?
And may finish the sentence too!

Ta1kinpeace · 26/09/2018 16:35

@bridgetoc
What should Remoaners be getting a grip OF ?

What three things in your daily life will be better after Brexit ?

bellinisurge · 26/09/2018 16:42

@Ta1kinpeace has asked some sensible questions. I'm sure Quitlings will be along with nonsense answers.

Figmentofmyimagination · 26/09/2018 16:51

Bridgetoc What three things in your daily life will be better after Brexit?

One important benefit, at least until it wears off, will be a powerful sense of having brought other people you perceive to be more successful/happier than you are (and their children) down a peg or two. You can't really put a price on this.

frumpety · 26/09/2018 16:55

I think Brexit will be blamed on the Labour government Wink

I think you can. £350 million a week.

Moussemoose · 26/09/2018 17:01

@LEELULUMPKIN

And Great Britain was the first country to abolish it. True fact

Unfortunately like many Brexiters you do struggle with facts. Denmark was the first European country to abolish the import of slaves. Britain abolished the Slave trade but not slavery in 1807. Spain actually abolished slavery in 1811.

And Britain did act to repress slavery during the 19th century after we had made our fortune from it.

JacquesHammer · 26/09/2018 17:02

Bridgetoc What three things in your daily life will be better after Brexit?

Now come on. We all KNOW the answer.

  1. We’ll put the great back in Great Britain.
  2. We’ll get our country back.
  3. Sovereignty

I mean it’s going to be a riot. Thank goodness for the plus points

DGRossetti · 26/09/2018 17:04

Unfortunately like many Brexiters you do struggle with facts.

All Brexiteers.

bellinisurge · 26/09/2018 17:37

You can have fun taking posh boys you don't like (on the instruction of posh boys you do like) down a peg or two while your queuing in Morrison's for food that isn't there.

HurricaneFloss · 26/09/2018 19:37

So ... the Labour Party conference. Did they actually decide anything about the EU? Confused

I know that prick McDonnell said remain couldn't be on a future ballot and Sir Keir said it could but did the Party make up its mind? Do they have a policy?
