to think our children will not forgive us if we don't sort Brexit out

DFiL voted Leave. He's not thick and he had his reasons but, to be frank, he's 80 and not going to have to live with the consequences long term. Especially, if the NHS don't manage to stockpile his multiple medications in the event of a No Deal.

AIBU to think we all need to kick up an almighty stink to ensure that our Government makes a deal that will protect our children's futures - even if that means remaining. Jacob Rees Mogg and his ERG buddies predict it could be 50 years for the UK to see the benefits of leaving the EU. That's too late for my DD.

Austerity has damaged enough lives, we can't let Brexit do more harm. It's no good shrugging and saying "Leave won". If this isn't sorted out there will be no winners.

Thanks Bellini, I do lurk there, and I will prep, whatever someone wants to call me a selfish twat or not. I'm going to do a list tomorrow and clear cupboards for everything.

But it's so much bigger than this.

I have family in France and Germany and some of them are elderly, so I might need to go there at short notice, and fuck knows what will happen after a hard Brexit.

I won't be able to take my dogs with me.

Those are just some issues off the top of my head. The whole thing is such a fuck up.

Ta1kinpeace · 21/09/2018 16:01

Could somebody explain to me how Preppers will have any impact on the supply of fresh fruit and veg and dairy and meat?

Ta1kinpeace · 21/09/2018 16:02

And I'm still waiting for Brexiters to clarify the three things that it will make better in their day to day lives.
THey keep saying that they already have
but are astoundingly unable to retype three simple things

Some have. The arguments have variously been:

It's not fair to restrict immigration to EU citizens and at worst is racist, we should be able to open our doors to anyone from anywhere who will make a contribution. Because we have unlimited EU immigration we have to restrict non-EU immigration.

The population is expanding and we don't have the infrastructure for it. (answer: build infrastructure and invest in public services, although I have some sympathy with this argument when we keep getting told we need more and more houses built on green field sites)

There will be more jobs and they will be better paid (no way, on either front)

just ONE decent reason would help...

The unrest will happen when:

- you go to Tesco's and discover the shelves are empty (and won't be re-stocked for 3 days) Asda is likewise empty and Morrison's didn't even open today;

- you go to the petrol station and find that your ration of 10 litres won't get you to work and back next week;

- you go to the chemist and they're limiting drugs to one week's supply at a time - and yes, you've queued for an hour, but no, they don't have your tablets today;

- you realise that you're actually wasting hours each week queuing for food, petrol, medicines and cash as you're limited each time;

- Hunt tells everyone that it's all the fault of the EU, so numpties attack and loot the foreign-owned grocery shops and restaurants;

- your partner comes home and tells you the factory has closed and the family income is going down from £750 a week to £75 a week

- your boss calls to tell you that because the big factory has closed, your workplace is closing too;

- your mum's cancer operation is delayed indefinitely as half of the EU staff have gone back, there is nobody available to operate - and anyway, the isotopes from Holland haven't arrived (again);

- your granddad's care home is closing - 90% of the staff were from the EU and they've gone home too. You (and thousands of other families) now have to urgently organise alternative care;

- social media, mobile phone networks and the internet are shut down to prevent them being used to organise demonstrations. TV is limited to BBC One only, is strictly controlled and closes when the general curfew comes into operation at 10pm each night;

- Prime Minister Rees-Mogg (or his stooge Johnson) comes on the telly to tell you that things will all be fine in about 50 years time, it's all Corbyn's fault and we're all in this together (and it finally dawns on people that they've been conned);

I've never read anything more patently ridiculous and hysterically extreme in my life. You deserve an Oscar for creative writing. The bit about BBC One was an especially inspired touch though, I'll give you that. Hmm

Ta1kinpeace · 21/09/2018 16:15

The immigration one is hatstand - the NHS is currently recruiting nurses from Jamaica ... it cannot see the irony of Windrush.
Non EU immigration rules are utterly horrible, hence why EU folks have filled the gaps.

Infrastructure - yup its an entirely Whitehall problem

Jobs - again not an EU issue

But the question I keep asking (as mother rightly teases me) is about DAY TO DAY LIFE of that individual.
What do they personally expect to be better after Brexit?
How will they personally measure its success ?

and I'm still waiting ....

RedToothBrush · 21/09/2018 16:18

Could somebody explain to me how Preppers will have any impact on the supply of fresh fruit and veg and dairy and meat?

It's funny because manufacturers are being asked by government to stockpile ingredients.

That might lead to shortages for normal consumers for raw ingredients.

But no rage here either.

It's almost as if it's simply selective rage for people who have been warning of problems.

And actually that rage is as worrying as potential shortages as how that is directed if there are shortages could result in civil unrest.

It should be directed against the fuck wits in power. Instead it will be directed at various innocent groups...

That post says a huge amount and does tend to support the idea that civil unrest is a distinct possibility.

10degreestostarboard · 21/09/2018 16:24

Ha ‘preppers’

Some folk have too much time on hand

DGRossetti · 21/09/2018 16:27

I've never read anything more patently ridiculous and hysterically extreme in my life.

Ah, the "can't happen here" defence. Nicely dressed up, and immaculately turned out, admittedly. But still lacking substance.

Generally, as my DF demonstrated to me when I was younger, "can't happen here" is actually a shorthand for "We're British don'cha know ?". Which is slightly insulting, racist, and wrong at the same time.

There are things which can't happen - after all, there are laws of nature (flat-earthers and homeopathy excepted). However, there are also things which are unlikely to happen, but which could happen. For example a bungled police operation where an innocent man was relieved of his head after a chain of increasingly ludicrous events. i'm sure if I had "hysterically" predicted that in 2004, I would have been flamed to death. Yet it happened.

Teh only way to counter the hysteria, is with some factual evidence. And (once again) when pressed for it, it vanishes. Like Keyser Soze ....

10degreestostarboard · 21/09/2018 16:28

Dgrossetti

You got the flat earther bit right. Remainers to a T

RedToothBrush · 21/09/2018 16:39

Perhaps we need a predictions for 2019 thread. And everyone can contribute and we can see who is closest.

It'd be an interesting exercise to do.

It should have everything from politics, to culture, to every day life in it.

Helmetbymidnight · 21/09/2018 16:40

Ah well, good news for those wanting a no deal Brexit. Looks like that’s where we’re heading.

Wont you tell us some of the good news we can expect?

Hazardswan · 21/09/2018 16:45

For anyone loving the idea of No Deal

Please read my openner on this thread below

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/_chat/3370225-I-know-Im-annoying-but?pg=1&order=

Thanking you Gin

10degreestostarboard · 21/09/2018 16:47

Hazardswan

I don’t need to read it I can imagine...

Do you cite all four horsemen or are you more selective?

RedToothBrush · 21/09/2018 16:50

10, if you read the thread you'll get an idea of how crass and vile your post above is.

DGRossetti · 21/09/2018 16:50

Perhaps we need a predictions for 2019 thread. And everyone can contribute and we can see who is closest.

Or follow the odds ? I wonder what William Hill are giving on the various Brexits now ?

10degreestostarboard · 21/09/2018 16:51

Toothbrush

Do you mean my reference to loony tunes preppers or flat earther remainiacs?

JacquesHammer · 21/09/2018 16:53

I don’t need to read it I can imagine..

Honestly are you a fucking parody? 😭😭

Hazardswan · 21/09/2018 16:55

My lovely endearing hurt person that hurts people.

Tell me how the no plans for meds are effective?

Give you a straight forward condition like epilepsy and we'll say its moderately to nearly completed controlled with meds. Shoot your shot tell me how well managed that will be, include everyday meds, the random break through seizures and what to do if someone is allergic to diazepam.

Go on baby tell me how our failing NHS with 200 drugs will cope with that.

bellinisurge · 21/09/2018 16:58

Oo nice. Since I last came on here I'm a selfish twat with too much time on my hands.
Well, if someone else can guarantee that my daughter will be able to eat half decent food post Brexit, I would happily give the job back to Morrison's or whoever.
But I can't. So the selfish twatishness will continue.
As for anyone struggling to buy food, if they voted Leave, I don't really care. If they voted Remain, I'd suggest they look after themselves because no one else will.

DGRossetti · 21/09/2018 16:59

No point in engaging with 10degreestostarboard ... although I must say their MO reminds me of another poster a while back who did the same thing ... they looked like they were debating. But actually it was merely recrafted shoutdowns with nothing of any substance. I know that's pretty much all Brexiteers, but some were more predictable than others.

The observation about wrestling with pigs seems apt.

10degreestostarboard · 21/09/2018 17:07

No, don’t engage with the leavers....

EthelThePiratesDaughter · 21/09/2018 17:15

Well what's the point engaging with them? It's two years since the referendum, we're heading for a disastrous cliff edge Brexit with no plan and none of them can identify any actual benefits of doing this or say anything more intelligent than "you lost, get over it".
