to think our children will not forgive us if we don't sort Brexit out

DFiL voted Leave. He's not thick and he had his reasons but, to be frank, he's 80 and not going to have to live with the consequences long term. Especially, if the NHS don't manage to stockpile his multiple medications in the event of a No Deal.

AIBU to think we all need to kick up an almighty stink to ensure that our Government makes a deal that will protect our children's futures - even if that means remaining. Jacob Rees Mogg and his ERG buddies predict it could be 50 years for the UK to see the benefits of leaving the EU. That's too late for my DD.

Austerity has damaged enough lives, we can't let Brexit do more harm. It's no good shrugging and saying "Leave won". If this isn't sorted out there will be no winners.

On the border issue:

The Good Friday Agreement (which was voted for in a referendum) brought an end to decades of violence over and around the Irish border. Thanks to the Good Friday Agreement, people who live on one side of the border and work on the other, or live on one side and go to school on the other, or own land which straddles the border, or use roads which meander across the border up to thirty times, can go about their lives in peace and safety.

Reinstating a border will make all of the above impossible and almost inevitably cause the return of the violence that the local people lived with and suffered from for decades.

The thing is, if we leave the customs union and single market (which the Tories say is necessary even though it wasn't mentioned on the ballot paper in the referendum that leave won by a wafer thin majority) there has to be a border.

If we leave the single market and customs union but have no border, Ireland (an entirely innocent party in all of this) will be in serious breach of EU law, and Ireland, the EU and the UK will all be in breach of the WTO rules that the leavers claim we can fall back on because they haven't got a fucking clue what those rules actually are.

Christ this thread is depressing.
So much ignorance on display here- it’s offensive how little understanding people have about the complexities of brexit and the impact it will have.
I despair of our future, I really do.

DeborahDowner · 20/09/2018 23:01

YANBU OP. It’s a mess. I can’t understand the logic at this point really.

Let’s be real- 51% voted out, without the full information required to make a truly informed decision.

I can’t believe more people don’t want to consider a do-over knowing what we know now about how much propaganda went into swaying public opinion.

Theresa May is in an impossible position - having to carry out the will of the (generally) uninformed people. I say uninformed not because I think they are stupid, far from it, but because they didn’t have full facts at the time they had the referendum, and if they did, enough of a segment would have voted differently as to have remained in my view.

We still don’t have a clear plan, and what has been proposed is contentious. No one knows how certain things will pan out. Businesses are struggling and Sterling remains low. This is not good. We are discouraging international trade and growth. We are attacking sectors which provide large swathes of our GDP. ‘Nationalism’ is showing an ugly face in some places. This is terrifying.

The impacts of a necessarily half-assed exit will be far reaching and I agree, dealt onto not only those of us who are still somewhat young but also our children and grandchildren.

I hope people see sense and demand a do-over, rather than blindly sticking to their guns on this- delivering ‘the will of the people’ Is foolish on this occasion IMO.

Yes sorry you are all absolutely right

We should be held to ransom by any part of the uk that chooses to do so / from now until forever

Christ, it’s bad enough dealing with an eu behaving like a cuckold let alone this

And you are just as bad as the eu - clinging to the hope that the prospect of ancient sectarian violence might ride to your rescue

EthelThePiratesDaughter · 20/09/2018 23:05

Either they are part of the UK or not.

If they are part of the UK, are you saying that we have no responsibility for them? That we should do whatever the fuck we want even if it completely fucks them over because who cares, it's only Northern Ireland?

Christ, it’s bad enough dealing with an eu behaving like a cuckold let alone this

I don't think that word means what you think it means.

KennDodd · 20/09/2018 23:05

The Labour Party is (officially at least) also committed to Brexit
Don’t they earn any of your ire?

Yes they do but the Labour party didn't start this whole shit storm and aren't running it.

CiderBrains · 20/09/2018 23:06

I have a feeling that once we leave, other countries will start following..

EthelThePiratesDaughter · 20/09/2018 23:08

I have a feeling that once we leave, other countries will start following.

Hah.

I live in France, and trust me, they are saying, "LOL", not "Brexit is going so well for the UK, we should totally copy them."

CiderBrains · 20/09/2018 23:09

That's France. They aren't exactly the U.K. s biggest cheerleader are they.. pre or post Brexit vote.

MedicinalGin · 20/09/2018 23:10

10 I have a solution for you- post Brexit, why don’t the British nations just set up as little kingdoms like in game of thrones and we can all fight and shout at each other as much as we like. No-one else in the world would need to give a shit about us while we scrabble about looting potatoes from one another.

CiderBrains · 20/09/2018 23:10

Didn't France ban the burka? Hardly a country to aspire to..

woman11017 · 20/09/2018 23:11

I have a feeling we wil be the poster boy for:
how leaving the EU after a fake vote,
run by liars ,
used by a corrupt racist governement,
to seize control and ,
empoverish all the good people who voted in good faith to leave the EU
will strengthen the EU for generations.

And still our lovely children will suffer for the trick that's been played on them by liars.

EthelThePiratesDaughter · 20/09/2018 23:11

Alright, so who exactly do you think is looking at us in admiration and thinking, if only we were stupid brave enough to do that?

PCPlumsTruncheon · 20/09/2018 23:12

Can I suggest that we stop feeding 10?
He/she/it is either a troll, a bot or monumentally stupid. Nobody can possibly be that ignorant or uncaring about NI.
For those genuinely interested, the Brexit boards contain reasoned well informed arguments and are awash with tedious evidence to back them up.

Thanks for your input - really added to discussion

EthelThePiratesDaughter · 20/09/2018 23:18

Nobody can possibly be that ignorant or uncaring about NI.

I hate to break it to you, but they (meaning millions) definitely can be and are that ignorant and uncaring.

CiderBrains · 20/09/2018 23:21

I feel that way about NI's ignorance and uncaring attitude about abortion.

EthelThePiratesDaughter · 20/09/2018 23:24

I feel that way about NI's ignorance and uncaring attitude about abortion.

You mean the attitude largely dictated by the religious nutters who were bribed £10bn to prop up Theresa May's government to make sure Brexit goes through?

EmmaGrundyForPM · 20/09/2018 23:25

I am afraid for the future on behalf of my (adult) children. I feel very angry about the fact that a referendum was held at all. I voted Remain because I genuinely believed- and still believe - that the UK is better in the EU than out of it.

But I feel so powerless about this. I don't think another referendum is the way forward. I really don't know what to do.

10degreestostarboard · 20/09/2018 23:26

Ethel

Sectarian top trumps?

I raise you the ira and the Brighton bombing

ICouldBeSomebodyYouKnow · 20/09/2018 23:26

YANBU, OP.

I just wish we had a government with the guts to stand up and say, "Yes there was a valid majority in favour of leaving, but since the referendum, many facts have come to light which mean leaving will be an economic disaster for the UK. Therefore, we are not leaving."

We do not have to do this to ourselves!

Now, does anyone know where we can find a government with guts? cos we aint got one round these parts

Buteo · 20/09/2018 23:27

I feel that way about NI’s the DUP’s ignorance and uncaring attitude about abortion.

There, fixed it for you.

EthelThePiratesDaughter · 20/09/2018 23:27

Sorry, I don't do whataboutery.

10degreestostarboard · 20/09/2018 23:28

That’s all you do...
