to think our children will not forgive us if we don't sort Brexit out

DFiL voted Leave. He's not thick and he had his reasons but, to be frank, he's 80 and not going to have to live with the consequences long term. Especially, if the NHS don't manage to stockpile his multiple medications in the event of a No Deal.

AIBU to think we all need to kick up an almighty stink to ensure that our Government makes a deal that will protect our children's futures - even if that means remaining. Jacob Rees Mogg and his ERG buddies predict it could be 50 years for the UK to see the benefits of leaving the EU. That's too late for my DD.

Austerity has damaged enough lives, we can't let Brexit do more harm. It's no good shrugging and saying "Leave won". If this isn't sorted out there will be no winners.

Ta1kinpeace in the U.K. every vote is reversible. One Parliament can not bind the next.

People just don't understand that or like it.

CiderBrains · 20/09/2018 21:10

"I have far more in common with a likeminded Italian or German than I do with some knuckle-dragging, immigrant-hating, Daily Mail reading leave voter from Birmingham."

Okay Confused Although you do know that not all people who aren't pro EU aren't from Birmingham and reading the Daily Mail! Confused

EthelThePiratesDaughter · 20/09/2018 21:10

We have half heartily taken to the metric system, we don't use Euros etc. Our attitudes and way of life is very different.

Scraping the barrel a bit, no?

I don't think currency or weights and measures quite strike at the heart of what our attitudes and way of life respresent.

EthelThePiratesDaughter · 20/09/2018 21:12

Although you do know that not all people who aren't pro EU aren't from Birmingham and reading the Daily Mail!

Ditto a Telegraph reader from Dorset if that makes you less likely to clutch those pearls.

CiderBrains · 20/09/2018 21:13

So do you think that the U.K. is like the majority of Europe? Because I don't see it? We are very different. In our humour/attitudes/way of life.

That's not me saying there is anything wrong with a Europeans, that is me acknowledging that the U.K. has a very different way of life..

1tisILeClerc · 20/09/2018 21:13

Thank you @Ethel.
My 'outlook' is a bit more 'Germanic' than perhaps typical English (whatever that may be).
I have always felt more 'European' than just English.
If you are 'white' then there is a reasonable chance some of your ancestors were from mainland Europe, as there has been a lot of 'hopping about' over the centuries.

EthelThePiratesDaughter · 20/09/2018 21:13

One Parliament can not bind the next.

People just don't understand that or like it.

70 year old leave voters certainly don't like it because they would prefer to bind the entire millennial generation that they know would reverse Brexit tomorrow given half the chance.

Moussemoose · 20/09/2018 21:14

Cider stop talking nonsense. We share a European heritage out culture, music, literature, politics, philosophy, language is intrinsically european.

"Our attitudes and way of life is very different"

This simply isn't true. We eat similar foods in similar way. Our political structures are similar. To join the EU you have to adhere to certain beliefs.

We are not 'the same' but culturally the majority of Europeans are more similar than different.

DGRossetti · 20/09/2018 21:14

I have far more in common with a likeminded Italian or German than I do with some knuckle-dragging, immigrant-hating, Daily Mail reading leave voter from Birmingham.

Sad
CiderBrains · 20/09/2018 21:14

Nope because now you're just stereotyping which dilutes your argument. It's almost eye rolling 🙄

DeathBySnoring · 20/09/2018 21:17

What really riles me is the 'taking back control of our borders' shite. We always had control. The UK just chose not to implement the controls we were given because they thought it would cost too much - and then pretended that the EU stopped us from doing it. Looking at you Theresa May!

And that EU migrants could claim benefits. Nope. Apparently my 30 yrs experience in working for DWP and understanding of facts was bettered by the Daily Mail's bollocks.

And my MIL voted Leave to stop 'brown' people moving here. I thought her head might explode when I explained the result of the Brexit vote and implications to her. Oh and that her neice who lives in Spain that she loves to stay with might have to come home. Karma.

woman11017 · 20/09/2018 21:18

We are European. Smile Any one with an inch of interest in etymology would understand. Our great bastard language is the evidence.

@eyejosh
Mr Macron was being kind, and diplomatic . The "brexit" campaign leaders are not simply liars, they are also, in fact , criminals: www.electoralcommission.org.uk/__data/assets/pdf_file/0019/244900/Report-of-an-investigation-in-respect-of-Vote-Leave-Limited-Mr-Darren-Grimes-BeLeave-and-Veterans-for-Britain.pdf

Brexit is crime scene.

There will be trials.

recluse · 20/09/2018 21:19

So do you think that the U.K. is like the majority of Europe? Because I don't see it? We are very different. In our humour/attitudes/way of life.

Nor, however, is the rest of Europe one homogenous entity.

JacquesHammer · 20/09/2018 21:19

I think of myself as European.

I find being British beyond embarrassing to be honest.

bellinisurge · 20/09/2018 21:19

Still waiting for someone to tell me how we get from Day One to all these brilliant trade deals that people will want to make with us.

CiderBrains · 20/09/2018 21:19

It's not nonsense. Traditional Europeans (so to speak) often find our humour, daft ness, comedy and "British ways" odd and sometimes baffling.

That's no bad thing but it just demonstrates we are different.

Labour brought in 24 hour drinking laws because they thought we could be like Europe in our round the clock social drinking style but actually that just meant the "British " style of having longer to get absolutely pissed off your face.. Not very European style there.,

borntobequiet · 20/09/2018 21:20

Margaret Thatcher’s Bruges speech, to the College of Europe, thirty years ago. Some interesting observations on Britain’s place in Europe.

CiderBrains · 20/09/2018 21:24

You don't hear Chinese people saying they are Asian first, they refer to themselves as Chinese so why do you think you're superior think it's better to call yourself European over English? What's wrong with saying you're English/welsh/Scottish/Irish?

Or does every country need to refer themselves by the continent they live on rather than the country?

JWIM · 20/09/2018 21:26

Cider mind that stereotyping - what is a 'traditional European (so to speak)' someone from one the 27 different EU member states, or EEA/EFTA member states, or maybe eligible to participate in Eurovision so stretching to Israel and Australia (from memory)? If the UK can have a unique 'character' then so can all those other sovereign states.

recluse · 20/09/2018 21:26

Traditional Europeans (so to speak)

Genuinely, who are these people?

Europe is made up of many countries, some of them very different from each other. It isn’t a case of all of them being similar to each other, and us being the only “different” people.

The fact that a country next to China is not Chinese is not comparable. We are not next to the country that is Europe, we are within the continent of Europe.

Myrnafoy · 20/09/2018 21:26

Sorry Cider but to imply that mainland Europe is one homogeneous mass of people with similar attitudes, ways of living etc is clearly bollocks .....there are cultural mores specific to each and every country and even within countries Confused why make out that we are somehow different?

ArialAnna · 20/09/2018 21:27

YANBU but with dross we have in power currently I'm not optimistic for a good outcome.

The best thing you can do for your daughter is encourage her to become highly educated and skilled in a field with high demand (and fluency in a foreign language wouldn't hurt either). Such people are welcome in many countries, so if its shite here she can move and start a new life elsewhere.

JWIM · 20/09/2018 21:27

But we are also European citizens for as long as the UK is an EU member state and individuals can describe themselves as they choose.

recluse · 20/09/2018 21:28

People are not saying that they are European first, over being British. They are saying that they are both. Which they are.

Myrnafoy · 20/09/2018 21:30

And what the hell is a traditional European ?
