No subpoena of Judge. No testimony from Ramirez. No real investigation. Just a raw exercise of political power untrammeled by any pretense of fairness, due process, or morality.

Although the walk-out surprised me, nothing else has.

There is nothing more infuriating than listening to old, entitled, white men pontificating on the 'effect' of a sexual assault on a woman vs the 'devastation' to a young, entitled, white man when she voices her truth.

@abigaildisney

  1. In all seriousness, let me say this. I feel for Dr Ford, I have experienced sexual assault. But nothing today has been as triggering for me as the rage and entitlement in this man. I had an angry, alcoholic father. He had an inside face and an outside face.
  2. He could make anyone believe he was a lovely, sweet, gentle man. If he'd been a Federal Judge, I am sure the ABA would have said nice things about him too. He did not rage every day, or about everything. But when he did rage it was terrifying.
  3. And generally what would send him into a rage was the same thing that sets off Judge Kavanaugh. Disrespect. Insubordination. Arrogance. Attitude. Entitlement. Disobedience. Our crimes were mostly thought crimes. What held them together...
  4. was that he felt that his status and entitlement were being threatened or questioned. Watching Judge Kavanaugh today I feel six years old again. I feel like a little girl watching her father purse his lips, as Judge Kavanaugh does. watching his face redden..
  5. as Judge Kavanaugh's does. I feel like a terrified little girl wondering whether and when I might be obliterated by my own father, taken apart. Killed. No, he never did any of those things. But when you are six and your father rages, it feels that way, believe me.
  6. I can tell you from hard won, painful, traumatic life experience. This man is an inappropriate choice for the Supreme Court. He is inappropriate for any court. My father did eventually get help and he changed
  7. The help he needed was for his addiction, yes, but it was for deeper, more pervasive problems too. Specifically what he needed help with was his sense of his own rank and entitlement. He needed to come to an understanding that he was just a man, and was not owed...
  8. more than every one else around him. He did change and that's an incredibly powerful and amazing thing. Judge Kavanaugh needs help. It is not an attempt at slander to say I feel sorry for his daughters. It is an expression of genuine empathy and concern.
  9. Please, Senate, if you confirm this man you will destroy this court for ever. The court can never recover from the degradation he will bring. His partisan leanings are wildly inappropriate. His temperament is poor. And the allegation casts enough of a shadow...
  10. over his character that no decision from here forward can ever go unquestioned. Please, do the right thing. This performance is disqualifying. Please do not confirm this man. mobile.twitter.com/abigaildisney/status/1045443374101266434

If only he had a point, ok, but he doesn't. He is the Stinker's boy now.

ohmymimi · 28/09/2018 16:36

I think we know the answer to this now. But the stench of how, and why, he was confirmed, and the unresolved accusations, will follow him and taint his every judicial action and the court on which he will sit.

'Was Kavanaugh saved when the GOP abandoned its 'female assistant' for bare-knuckled partisanship?'
As Republicans transformed the hearing back into a more traditionally partisan affair, they exposed weaknesses in Democrats’ questioning. While Democrats did effectively draw out Kavanaugh’s refusal to call for an FBI investigation, something each of his named accusers have done, they did not take up Mitchell’s project of methodically quizzing Kavanaugh about his activities during the summer of 1982, when the alleged attack occurred. Committing Kavanaugh to a detailed account of that year could have allowed for a comparison of his answers with the substance of Ford’s testimony. Investigators use such comparisons to advance the inquiry by narrowing down times and locations when and where the alleged assault may have taken place. Democrats also allowed Republicans to draw them into partisan disputes over, for instance, the handling of Ford’s allegations, rather than focusing on contradictions in Kavanaugh’s testimony and his remarkable display of temper.

TallGiraffeHat · 28/09/2018 16:40

Since when did feelings take precedence over evidence? What happened to innocent until proven guilty?
If you have sons, would you be okay with their lives screwed up by someone making an accusation without proof, and your son being denounced as guilty for something that he can't disprove either?
Some men get away with rape, because of lack of evidence. But there are women who lie too. Its horrifying to see the hysteria about believing one or the other.
Im no Trump supporter, but i do want to see the guy treated fairly too.

Gumpendorf · 28/09/2018 16:59

Amy Klobuchar was v impressive. I can't even watch Ted.

TallGiraffe. What people are asking for is a proper investigation of all the witnesses and all the allegations. That hasn't happened. I'm sure you're not suggesting that Dr Ford was lying and Judge Kavanaugh denied the allegations. Less convincingly in my opinion but there is still a big gap in everyone's knowledge. The other allegations have not been investigated at all. They should be investigated in order to determine whether someone is given a position on the Supreme Court.

You ask about sons. What about our daughters? What message does this send to our daughters when we give boys permission to behave badly in their teenage years. What message is it giving to our sons?

lettuceWrap · 28/09/2018 17:01

TallGiraffe, “the guy” in this case has been treated more than fairly, with an exceptionally amount of largess, many would say - a number serious claims against him are not being investigated, he has been caught in lies several times in his recent statements and he behaved in a belligerent and unseemly way towards those questioning him yesterday.

He is very clearly an unsuitable candidate for Scotus, a lifetime position of power and influence over others... yet ASTONISHINGLY he’s still in line for the job!

ohmymimi · 28/09/2018 17:02

Newsweek:
Driven by the tailwind of enraged female votes, the Democrats are not only going to retake the House of Representatives, they are poised to take the Senate. Democratic candidates with any sense will run and re-run excerpts from the unflaggingly warm and polite professor and the fulminating entitled white men in every election campaign from now until November.
As for Kavanaugh, he shouldn’t get too comfortable in his new sinecure. In his case, life tenure doesn’t mean never having to say you’re sorry. Once the women’s candidates take over the United States Congress, they will be in a position to reconsider whether Brett Kavanaugh should be on the Supreme Court—or any court. Perhaps he will be impeached for lying at his confirmation hearings, or for the underlying misconduct allegations. Or, perhaps after 2020 Democrats will just pack the court with enough additional Justices that he will spend the rest of his life tenure writing dissenting opinions. There is of course no constitutional limit to the size of the Supreme Court. That decision is entirely in the hands of Congress and the president.
