... to say that 'Lush' are an amazing shop?

This morning, my DP took my DDs shopping for my birthday gifts.
The smallest is 6, and LOVES Lush. She insisted that I needed something from there so she could play around with the bath bombs.
DP apparently found a few things, and DD trotted over to look at the pretty things. She picked up a bath bomb, and inadvertently knocked the entire display over. Bath bombs rolling all over the place!

DD burst into tears, and was mortified.
The lovely assistant brought her a tissue, laughed and said it was very funny, and not to worry.
She then asked DD which was her favorite. She picked out a bubble bar. The assistant gift wrapped it, and gave it to her for free!

That was such a kind gesture, and my DD was over the moon.
Thank you Lush! Smile

Yes you can Google, and not all the windows were the same size so the hash tags were not as clear in all of them.

I see 4 boxes referring to SpyCops or spies in that window, it's pretty clear they're referring to undercover police.

If the ads weren't clear, the ASA would have banned them, but they didn't.

Dapplegrey · 15/09/2018 22:21

I've boycotted them since that dreadful police campaign.

bluemoonchances · 15/09/2018 22:21

I refuse to shop there. The badly managed police campaign was one reason, which has now been discussed to death... the initial campaign did not represent spy cops, it very clearly insinuated that all cops are liars... they knew what they were doing when the made those window displays...

But also a few years ago the kids campaign.... putting their often young female staff members in this position was disgusting. I'm sure Lush will say they could opt out... but we've all been young, working our first jobs... it is not realistic that most young girls would dare opt out when head office tell them they're doing this world record etc. See this for a better explanation.
mitheringsfrommorningside.wordpress.com/tag/lush-cruelty-free-kisses/

I just think they're a gimmick who try to hard to represent themselves as ethical.. but it's all just PR. The staff may well be lovely, all big retailers will have some lovely staff... but the company will never get my money in their tills.

bluemoonchances · 15/09/2018 22:22
  • kiss campaign not kids... bloody autocorrect again!!
kierenthecommunity · 15/09/2018 22:22

I do find it odd (on this thread and at the time of the Spy Cops campaign) how slavishly people stick up for Lush. It’s all a bit weird and cult like.

Can’t see why people can’t say ‘it was a valid campaign but I can see why police officers were offended’ as that’s kind of obvious to someone with half an eye

AllesAusLiebe · 15/09/2018 22:24

I’m still struggling to understand how it’s possible to knock over a whole display, simply by ‘picking up a bath bomb’ .....

kierenthecommunity · 15/09/2018 22:24

Give over, the public isn't that stupid

It largely is. Why do people voluntarily go on or indeed watch shows like Jeremy Kyle? Grin

olivesnutsandcheese · 15/09/2018 22:28

Can't stand the place, the pervading odour in our local shopping centre makes me want to heave. Anyone who can stand the stench and actually work there is, frankly, very weird. DH once bought me one of their gift boxes. I had to put it straight in the garage. I was like ' you paid £25 for that SHIT' Shock and I'm normally very grateful and appreciative of anything. It just gives me the rage

Flatpackjackie · 15/09/2018 22:29

I shop in there BECAUSE of their SpyCops campaign. I also love the fact that they support hunt saboteurs and are anti-badger cull.

FlamingoLass · 15/09/2018 22:30

Haven’t shopped there since the campaign.
And actually wish I dumped them before that for the tiresome visits when I could not walk into a store without them pouncing on me, always using my pink hair as an excuse

Fuck off and leave me alone.

LaurieMarlow · 15/09/2018 22:31

I am a fan of the company.

The staff rock. They are great with kids. I love some of the products. It's refreshing that they aren't solely about the profit margins. I personally have no issue with the police campaign and kinda admire how they stood firm on it.

In objective terms though it was a PR disaster. Unfortunately.

Havaina · 15/09/2018 22:34

Can't speak for others, but I don't use Lush products, shop at Lush or work at Lush. I'm not slavish! I'm too tight to spend my hard earned money on fancy smellies. Grin I'm not sticking up for Lush, I'm sticking up for a campaign that spoke up on behalf of women that were screwed over. They had to be provocative to do that, not put up glittery, unicorn shit that a pp referred to.

And there have been lots of cases of policemen (not undercover) grooming vulnerable women they were supposed to protect (e.g. victims of domestic violence). More needs to happen to prevent that.

hobblesma · 15/09/2018 22:34

There is a bizarre lady that works in the Dundee Lush. She accused my DD of shoplifting when she came over to me at the till, from the next till along where she had been served, and put her things in my bag. Because you know, that’s how shoplifting goes Confused

MischaB · 15/09/2018 22:34

I'm going to sound like a massive grump but I can't stand the way they approach you with their crazy fake smiles, weird conversation like they're talking to a 2 year old, etc etc. It's all so false. I've never been in there and been talked to like a normal adult human being. It is very odd...

Havaina · 15/09/2018 22:38

She accused my DD of shoplifting when she came over to me at the till, from the next till along where she had been served, and put her things in my bag. Because you know, that’s how shoplifting goes confused

Maybe she didn't see your dd pay for them? Sounds like a misunderstanding. Thieving is a real problem.

SilverHairedCat · 15/09/2018 22:39

Why do people who have no proof always say this? because people like you don't put any effort into the other side of the debate, and just demand evidence without having made any effort to be informed first.

sanssherif · 15/09/2018 22:41

Bath bombs are the shitest invention ever, just total shit. Give me radox bubbles not fucking buzzing fluorescent soap scum with glitter.
Can't even walk past the place it STINKS. No way would I go inside it's overpriced tat for teenagers to use.
God help people with excema. All those chemicals must be really bad for skin and for the environment.
Rant over
Shit shop

Havaina · 15/09/2018 22:42

Where have I demanded evidence, Silver?

Actually, you've conveniently not quoted my example of me providing evidence when requested Smile

It's ok, we all know you have no proof.

Pinkyyy · 15/09/2018 22:43

I enjoy lush products generally but to be honest I think over the years their pricing has just become ridiculous

hobblesma · 15/09/2018 22:45

Maybe she didn't see your dd pay for them?

Perhaps she did not . But that doesn't excuse how she behaved.

Sounds like a misunderstanding.

Nope. She knew exactly what she was doing.

Thieving is a real problem.

I know. We were not stealing.

Moanranger · 15/09/2018 22:47

Avoid lush, never liked the smell & over-priced & REALLY avoided them when I found out they supported hunt sabs .. “Chemical-free” marketing is bullshit. The police campaign was just part & parcel .The one good thing about their overt politics is at least you know where they stand, so you can support or shun accordingly.
Nice that a staff member gave a kid a freebie, but they probably have CCTV on staff at all times, so she knew she was being watched - welcome to retail 2018!

Havaina · 15/09/2018 22:50

hobbles well if she maybe didn't see your dd pay then you can't assume she knew she knew exactly what she was doing.

Not suggesting you were stealing, hence I said 'misunderstanding'.

DeadButDelicious · 15/09/2018 22:50

I fell out with Lush waaaaaaaaaay before all this #spycops malarkey, which came as no surprise really as Mark Constantine (the owner) has been banging that particular drum for a very long time, especially over on the much missed International Forum. It's a real shame that they finally pulled the plug on that place. It was a nice little community. This place reminds me a lot of it.

Anyway, I digress, I was a huge lush fan back in the day, took part in forum parties, spent a small fortune on bath products. I won't give them a penny now. Not one single penny. I would urge people to google 'the smell of bullshit' and check out the mitherings blog as it gives a real insight into just how little lush value their staff.

hobblesma · 15/09/2018 22:54

well if she maybe didn't see your dd pay then you can't assume she knew she knew exactly what she was doing.

She accused my DD of shoplifting, so yes, she knew what she was doing.

Not suggesting you were stealing, hence I said 'misunderstanding'.

You may not have been, but she was, so not chance of it being misunderstood.

Now, has she not been sure if the items were paid for, she could have asked. She could have asked my DD, she could have asked me and she could have asked the person on the next till. She did none of these things. She accused my DD of stealing.

SilverHairedCat · 15/09/2018 22:56

🙄
Some links to sites other than mainstream media since apparently Google is beyond people today.
www.brandwatch.com/blog/lush-spycops-campaign/ - external company monitoring how brands are faring

forums.digitalspy.com/discussion/2284008/do-you-support-the-anti-police-campaign-by-lush - non police forum

bjl.co.uk/news/lush-right-idea-wrong-execution/ - opinion piece from a PR company on how the campaign was handled

In the interests of fairness, I read in one article while I was looking that Lush's sales were up 13% in the month after the campaign, so even bad press gets you somewhere in terms of business.
