to wish decorating for autumn was a thing in the UK?

I want to decorate my house for autumn. A low key version of the way some people in the United States decorate for fall.

But it just isn't a thing here, so I can't really find any good stuff in the shops.

Or am I just looking in all the wrong places? In particular I would love some nice decorative pumpkins that aren't Halloween themed.

Shops seem to be going directly into Christmas, which annoys me. Why do we only get a two week window for Halloween stuff but a 4 month window for Christmas?

Oh god, please don’t. Can’t stand all that fake autumn leaf and pumpkin patch shite. My MIL goes mental, for it. So twee.

IAmcuriousyellow · 14/09/2018 20:21

I saw a lovely video on FB the other day about flowered pumpkins - they just PVA’d them on in lovely patterns and they looked amazing! Really lovely. I like your idea of autumn decorating and would do it too if I could be arsed but I can’t.. i can do seasonal cleaning but that’s about it. If I were pushed I’d probably make an autumn leaf bunting kind of thing. Or glue petals to pumpkins (they really did look gorgeous)

Showergel1 · 14/09/2018 20:23

Yes YANBU.
Trying to make an autumn wreath and it's so hard to find all the lovely things on Pinterest.

ElfridaEtAl · 14/09/2018 20:23

I am with you OP, I love this time of year and wish I could jazz up the house a bit. Twee or not, I'd like to be able to.

Musicalstatues · 14/09/2018 20:23

Have you tried amazon? We got a few bits to decorate for thanksgiving from there.

specialsubject · 14/09/2018 20:24

plastic tatfest #1 is six sodding weeks away and it already getting hard to buy useful stuff . tatfest 2 is 3 months off and that is appearing too.

so plenty of planet wreckers about as I see it. Maybe do something pinterest with leaves and twigs? free.and biodegradable.

IpanemaChica · 14/09/2018 20:24

I like it, but then I’ve lived in the U.S. so I’ve been converted 🍂Smile

Idontbelieveinthemoon · 14/09/2018 20:24

Our local Sainsburys has pumpkins in all sorts of colours and sizes.

Not sure about using them to decorate for Autumn but the green ones are gorgeous.

TooManyPaws · 14/09/2018 20:25

I got some gorgeous ceramic mushrooms and toadstools in Lidl a couple of weeks ago. Aldi should be having their autumn decorations in soon. It seems a bigger thing in Germany as I brought some lovely autumn ornaments back from visiting a friend in Hannover. No pumpkins but plenty of toadstools, mushrooms, pine cones, hedgehogs 🦔, coloured leaves etc.

Yorkshirelassie · 14/09/2018 20:26

Oh me too!! I've found some lovely autumn leaf themed tealight holders on eBay and have some pumpkin shower gel on the go. I think celebrating the seasons is the way to go and Autumn is one of the loveliest!

TheEverywhereBear · 14/09/2018 20:27

I think it's a nice idea. I like marking the seasons and anything which makes the dark evenings twinklier has to be a winner in my book!

I try to decorate with natural things as much as possible - to avoid contributing to the waste mountain and because I think it looks nicer. We tend to bring back finds from walks like leaves, conkers, nuts etc. Never underestimate the power of a bottle of gold spray paint to make things look festive!

DiveBombingSeagull · 14/09/2018 20:28

Anyone like to suggest some nice pinterest stuff for inspiration please?

sheepsheep · 14/09/2018 20:28

Our local Sainsburys has pumpkins in all sorts of colours and sizes.

As in fake ones? Sainsburys is out of my way a bit so it is probably the only place I haven't looked, so I might have to go tomorrow.

specialsubject I can only laugh at your planetwrecker comment. :o

I love small decor changes according to the season we are in. This year I’ve decorated a plain twig wreath with sunflowers and pine cones from hobbycraft and orange and red maple leaves from eBay. Looks nice and rustic. Using it as a nice centrepiece on our dining table at the moment with a nice autumnal candle in the middle :) looks lovely and always have compliments when we have visitors.

sheepsheep · 14/09/2018 20:31

There are limits to my crafting abilities. Some people can take a twig and a few leaves and make it look good, but I am not one of those people.

Shitonthebloodything · 14/09/2018 20:32

I do it. Couldn't give a shit if some random on Mumsnet thinks it's twee, I enjoy it. I have a wreath on the door, even change my curtains, cushions and pictures etc and do the same for Christmas.

Homesense is the place to go.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 14/09/2018 20:32

Twiggy things from the garden? I have dogwood and a creeper (either Boston or Virginia) that goes red very soon.
Red berries on a Cottoneaster.
Could get some teasels if I was near enough (I see them on the side of the motorway but that's a risk I;m not taking)

Love the idea of a stack of pumpkins but I know some clumpsy toad would trip on them Hmm

I love Hallowe'en and the decorations but its a lot for basically one night.

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 14/09/2018 20:34

Pine cones, I have a few scattered about on our fireplace. I get the DC to look for them, plus they’re free.

Cyw2018 · 14/09/2018 20:36

Etsy might be good for this sort of thing.

elQuintoConyo · 14/09/2018 20:38

I have made:

Felt leaf table runner, different coloured leaves.
Door wreath with 'fakeorns' (fake acorns!)
Pinecone + twig mobile in the porch, made by a 5yo.
Random collections of pinecones, twigs, acorns, conkers etc dotted around the house.

Nothing that is a dust-collecting bugger, just a few things that come out every year. Ditto Easter, and i have a wreath for all seasons - my Hallowe'en wreath is epic Grin

I'm in neither UK nor USA and it is nigh on impossible to find autumny things here. And we mostly go summer>2 weeks of cold>summer!

percheron67 · 14/09/2018 20:38

I buy different shape, size and colour squash and varnish them. Put them on an old plate on my dresser. I replace my "summery" cups/plates on dresser and put my autumn ones out. Next theme will be Christmas. I have been collecting bits of chin from car boots etc for years so don't seem to run out of ideas and themes.

Peachypips · 14/09/2018 20:38

I like doing this in a very low-key way. My family scathingly call it 'the autumn display'. Around the wood burner I put different shaped squashes and very small pumpkins that I get from lidl, some pine cones and some candles which I light in the eves.

CurlsLDN · 14/09/2018 20:39

Think the pp meant real squash/pumpkins at Sainsbury's. We have a big one near us and I haven't seen any non-halloween-autumn Decs in there.

Tk maxx is the very best place for this! They have tons of seasonal stuff imported from the US. I got a lovely 'cozy cabin' candle and was v tempted by all the different pumpkin or spiced apple ones. They also had loads of different decorative pumpkins, foliage etc

jinglebitch · 14/09/2018 20:41

Why is being a planet wrecker funny?

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 14/09/2018 20:45

I love marking the seasons in my decor too, don’t care if some people think it’s twee, I like a nice autumnal wreath for the front door, looks lovely when all the leaves turn that beautiful red colour, it’s my favourite time of year and I like to celebrate it.
