to wish decorating for autumn was a thing in the UK?

I want to decorate my house for autumn. A low key version of the way some people in the United States decorate for fall.

But it just isn't a thing here, so I can't really find any good stuff in the shops.

Or am I just looking in all the wrong places? In particular I would love some nice decorative pumpkins that aren't Halloween themed.

Shops seem to be going directly into Christmas, which annoys me. Why do we only get a two week window for Halloween stuff but a 4 month window for Christmas?

If you've got imagination, you can do it on your own. Mass-wise such programmes.trend will be a pain in the arse to give people anxiety, competition as if their lives are not busy and miserable enough.

I can sit all day making dresses for my collection of Fashion Royalty dolls. if I were to decry the lack of such social media channels/articles in the magazines, I would be fair to expect a lynch mob at my door step. Quite rightly.

GummyGoddess · 20/09/2018 16:45

Could you not just turn the Halloween pumpkins around so the faces look at the wall? Obviously doesn't work if they're a centrepiece.

Another vote for tkmaxx, I got a sort of purple/silver ombre glass pumpkin last year. DH made fun of me but has already asked when the pumpkins are coming out again this year as he likes the change.

Peridot1 · 20/09/2018 17:09

I was disappointed at both HomeSense and TKMaxx this year. Only seemed to be very Halloween type stuff. I got my metal fruits there last year but they didn’t have anything similar this time.

Mind you I don’t need to buy anything really!

The other Autumn thing I like to do is put a yellow or orange chrysanthemum plant in a pot just out side the front door. But DH has planted up some Violas this year instead. Nice but don’t give me the same feeling.

WingsofNylon · 20/09/2018 17:14

OP I've not rtft but I just contacted my local florist and asked if they would put on an autumn wreath session. They agreed so long as I round up 6 people. I'm so excited. You could try the same thing.

wiccamum · 20/09/2018 17:15

Making my wreath tonight. It will be oak leaves, pine cones and cotton seed pods. I wanted some acorns but only found some really manky looking ones 😕

Oldraver · 20/09/2018 17:18

O work in a think's itself posh garden centre.

We cant move for decorative pumkins

wiccamum · 20/09/2018 20:14

All done. It’s a bit wonky, but I think it will settle. Now I’m scared to put it on the door in case it gets blown away in the storm!

I've just shoved some conkers in a jar. They look nice. That's the extent of my autumn decorative skills.

ParadiseLaundry · 20/09/2018 20:51

That's gorgeous wiccamum, I wish I had your creative skill. I love those cotton flowers!

wiccamum · 20/09/2018 20:58

Thank you Paradise, the cotton flowers are from hobbycraft! It’s a bit fragile but my front door is quite sheltered so I think it will hold up ok. Give it a go, I just bought a wreath base and kept poking more bits in 😁

CurlsandCurves · 20/09/2018 21:10

It’s all lovely to look at, but not happening here. Just more stuff to dust.

And while I love to see this in other people’s homes, I’m too much of a minimalist Monica to be able to deal with it in mine. I can just about stand 3 weeks of a Christmas tree and a few decorations.

Sewrainbow · 20/09/2018 21:30

Laura Ashley had some nice quality pumpkin bunting the other day. I thought about doing it but it was expensive for what it was

Cassimin · 22/09/2018 21:10

Autumn is a great season, there’s lots to find out and about but what would you do for spring?

Alisonjane12 · 01/10/2019 03:12

Homesence is definitely the place to go for your pumpkin’s. Best to go August and September time though. I brought beautiful glass and ceramic ones

Crimson72 · 01/10/2019 03:55

Sorry but YABU. My house is a right state as I barely have time to clean. “Decorating for autumn” would just be another thing to worry about!

HaileySherman · 01/10/2019 04:22

I LOVE autumn colors, decorations. I keep these lit glass pumpkins on my dining table. I also have a ledge all around my living room that i put fall leaves garland with white Christmas lights in them. I thinknit gives the house such a warm feeling.

Oh i also put a big autumn colored plaid bow with some autumn leaves/flowers on front door and hang a pumpkin type wreath on the wall. Also a couple of small scarecrows in the corner and jack o'lanterns, and a horn o'plenty on an entertainment stand. Luckily my interior is all a very light off white, walls, curtains, furniture and rugs (where we have rug and not stone tile). Makes decorating easy and not decorating looks a bit boring. I tend towards minimalism in my daily living (don't roast me please, not a stringent minimalist) because at my age I've found I'm just not organized enough to have lots of stuff. For me, lots of stuff equals lots of clutter and mess and that is mentally and emotionally exhausting to me. Constant struggle because my mother likevto really load up on everything, but is so incredibly organized that her home is immaculate. A place for everything and everything in its place and she lives by that religiously. I'm incredibly envious, but just can't manage it myself.

When i was a child people were more into seasonal gardening, which as well as a form of decoration sustained our wildlife. There'd be plenty of native trees about, use.

Out of interest, why pumpkins? They have been imported into the UK. Our original jack-o-lanterns were Swedes or turnips. As said Lidl had mushrooms in and there's always woodland animal statues about.

So how about a decorative turnip, with a few rabbits (a good source of meat all year round) and squirrels sitting about? Or doesn't that have the same appeal as the imported shite.

The problem is we've moved away from natural decorating for Christmas, which is a season. We used to use greenery/mistletoe/holly/ivy/pinecones and not just plastic, shiney decorations.

The harvest festival wasn't just about collecting food. We decorated for Autumn as part of the celebration of giving thanks and a bit of paganistic appeasement to the spirits, so we'd survive winter.

The schools would have leaf paintings and such, as well as conkers being used. Not a pumpkin in sight.

Fridakahlofan · 01/10/2019 09:10

Just more crap for landfill. Live simply!

Rudebestman · 01/10/2019 09:20

If you want to do to OP then fine, but I hope it doesn’t become a “thing” that everyone has to aspire to do that fans the flames of consumerism.

MO21305 · 01/10/2019 09:38

I follow loads of American home accounts on Instagram & love their autumn decor. I've found a few nice bits this year in TK Maxx, Homesense & also Etsy. If you do shop on Etsy though make sure to set the filters to UK stores only. I found some lovely things on there, added them to my basket then realised they were being shipped from the UK when I noticed the shipping cost was almost the same amount as the item I was buying! Not as many options here in the UK, but people are starting to follow the trend.

Snugglepumpkin · 01/10/2019 10:06

I decorate (a bit) for Autumn.
Have sienna Keswick check rugs & cushions I swap out for the usual ones, similar sienna checked kitchen seat pads, pumpkin soup bowls & a large version as a centre piece along with an autumn wreath, pot pourri, mugs, worktop saver, tea towels etc... with autumn designs on them & a few other odd bits.
Most got from Laura Ashley who do some Autumn decs every year.
They haven't got much this year.

I'll leave them up until I decorate from Christmas.

NoSauce · 01/10/2019 10:06

No no no.

SilverySurfer · 01/10/2019 12:16

My only nod to autumnal decorations are lots of conkers spread about the place. They are supposed to keep spiders at bay - time for new ones as I've seen a few spiders in the last couple of weeks, ugh.
