to wish decorating for autumn was a thing in the UK?

I want to decorate my house for autumn. A low key version of the way some people in the United States decorate for fall.

But it just isn't a thing here, so I can't really find any good stuff in the shops.

Or am I just looking in all the wrong places? In particular I would love some nice decorative pumpkins that aren't Halloween themed.

Shops seem to be going directly into Christmas, which annoys me. Why do we only get a two week window for Halloween stuff but a 4 month window for Christmas?

People with different priorities?

Pretty sure most people spend more time on their phones than I do faffing with twigs and shit.

Tr1skel1on · 15/09/2018 19:25

I love the threading conkers for a fireplace garland idea. I'm going to take my DC out conker hunting tomorrow to find some.

I also like a few autumn decorations, we have some wooden mushroom ornaments from DH's family that must be at least 30 years old so it can't be that new a thing!

cloudtree · 15/09/2018 19:27

I switched out my summer wreath for my autumn wreath yesterday. Autumn leaves and pine cones. It looks lovely against the front door, particularly when the lanterns are lit either side of the door.

ForalltheSaints · 15/09/2018 19:33

I am not keen on decorations other than at Christmas, but there are plenty of things in the autumn to celebrate, or remember.

TheFuckfaceWhisperer · 15/09/2018 19:42

I have been collecting bits of chin from car boots etc for years

Sounds appropriately macabre...

ILikeyourHairyHands · 15/09/2018 19:52

I always have a bowl or ornamental gourds that I get from the florist as a not to Autumn (DH mocks me every year, it's become a thing).

I always get a few arrangements a week so go for more autumnal colours and flowers as the season changes.

I've got ornamental cabbages in a vase at the moment!

@ipswitchwitch I love it - fab name for a thread.

And we have a ready made song courtesy of grease 2. “I’ll been your ponce for all seasons...all the year through...”

CantankerousCamel · 15/09/2018 20:11

It’s one of the oldest traditions, bringing the outside in during the colder months. I love our winter walks and our Halloween time.

InterstellarSleepingElla · 15/09/2018 20:15

TKMaxx - I got some cute ornamental non-ghoulish pumpkins last year. They had a great Halloween selection too.

I would look st changing out cushions and throws into more autumn/fall colours and things like candle holders and trinkets and faux flowers/dried flowers if you are into that sort of thing.

Also, glass vases filled with fir cones etc!

Aspenfrost · 15/09/2018 20:18

I dislike the word “fall” instead of autumn.

I have hurricane vases on my windowsill which I fill with tat for the seasons. Flowers and stuff for spring/summer. Felt leaves for autumn and at Christmas time I fill them with the polystyrene balls from our old beanbag (to look like snow) with snowmen perched on top of them. It's only one room and it look nice and makes me appreciate the seasons all year round.

mrpoopybutthole · 16/09/2018 00:27

I never realised other ppl do this too. I've always loved Autumn. I moved to a new place last August, in a kind of wooded area. Walking the dogs each day I started collecting natural stuff for crafts like pine cones (there's tons of them round here, all different sizes). I baked pine cones with autumn spices like cinnamon & all spice, so they smelt good. Put some in a large glass vase, some on decorative plates I have, with candles in between. I made Xmas wreaths using the cones, some evergreen twigs/leaves & holly berries. Might try an autumn one this year.
I found that it's a great way to celebrate the season, bringing outdoors in & a way to do some creative crafts. Ppl might say 'who has time for this', I find crafts a creative outlet & relaxing. Ppl manage to find time to watch TV or go on their phones to relax. This is just my way of relaxing.

Stunt pumpkins 🎃!!!!!

DiveBombingSeagull · 16/09/2018 13:26

I've just lost hours on pinterest searching because of this thread, I'm now planning on how to autumn up my house.

Kit10 · 16/09/2018 14:20

Ive bought an autumn wreath, not a crafty person won't be making things but LOVE autumn :) love the fact someone has said they're too busy looking after the kids and paying the mortgage haha, yeah I'm going to have to miss October's mortgage payment and I will be too busy attaching it to my front door to feed my kids that day, but they'll all understand!

Kit10 · 16/09/2018 14:23

Aspenfrost

I read the other day that Fall actually originates from the UK and predates Autumn, can't remember when/why we use autumn though. I say autumn though.

scaryteacher · 16/09/2018 17:09

I decorate the house for Autumn with the autumn shaped chocolates they do here in Belgium, all nicely arranged, and then I eat them. Sorted.

ParadiseLaundry · 20/09/2018 14:29

We went foraging in the woods and found some bits for a little display. I'm a bit worried that with the red berries it looks a bit too Christmassy 🤔 I have put a picture on as I have no one in RL who shares this passion I can share it withGrin

I also realised I hasn't even looked on amazon for autumn bits and saw these ornamental gourds, which I like but they wouldn't really go with my home decor, but I did see a YT vid where they painted them with chalk paint and the stalks gold which looked really nice.

Peridot1 · 20/09/2018 14:36

I did a basket for th table yesterday. Wooden carved fruits, silver and copper metal fruits, a wooden acorn and a gold pumpkin candle. I thought it looked Autumnal. DH commented that I was moaning about shops having Xmas stuff out early and I was doing the same. Will pick up some conkers on my walk tomorrow and add them to see if it looks more Autumnal.

It’s hard to get the balance right!

Paradise - I think the berries do look a bit Christmassy but there are lots of red berries around at the moment. It is a sign of autumn as well as Christmas.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 20/09/2018 14:39

Yep-zooming down the thread to say TK Maxx, Home sense and Sainsburys.

I did see others suggested as well so adding my vote.

And I do change cushions to more seasonal colours and add throws etc but think this is from my time working at Laura Ashley where "dressing the room" was a thing

ParadiseLaundry · 20/09/2018 14:44

Thanks Peridot, I think you're right, I will lose the berries. Your basket sounds lovely, I think I need a autumnal candle too, I only have Christmassy ones at the minute.

Thanks for reminding me about conkers, I think I will send DS to the park with grandad this afternoon to collect some!

Couldn't give a shit if some random on Mumsnet thinks it's twee

From way upthread. I agree. If you enjoy it, do it.
