to wish decorating for autumn was a thing in the UK?

I want to decorate my house for autumn. A low key version of the way some people in the United States decorate for fall.

But it just isn't a thing here, so I can't really find any good stuff in the shops.

Or am I just looking in all the wrong places? In particular I would love some nice decorative pumpkins that aren't Halloween themed.

Shops seem to be going directly into Christmas, which annoys me. Why do we only get a two week window for Halloween stuff but a 4 month window for Christmas?

I’m pagan and I decorate to honour the festivals of the year. It’s fun, I involve dd and it makes our house feel homely. It’s a tradition and it brings us joy. Honour the seasons OP, you don’t have to use “supermarket tat”and it can still bring you a lot of pleasure 🍁

As said, Lidl and the other shops mentioned.

In my school, in the 70's we used to do seasonal decorating, as we moved towards Harvest Festival.

We do things at Brownies and Sunday School. The Church had a children's bit and we'd make leaf pictures and prints.

My family wasn't religious, Church etc was just 'what you did'.

There seemed to be a closer connection to Nature, but that could have been lack of choice, because of there being no cheap goods and a lack of disposable income.

covetingthepreciousthings · 14/09/2018 21:31

Definitely try TKmaxx / Homesense - they do the usual Halloween stuff, but they also do non halloweeny decorative pumpkins as well as autumn theme candles too & I'm sure I've seen autumn wreathes.

You'd also be worth trying Etsy for needlefelt pumpkins, or maybe Not On The High St.

Totally get what you mean, I like having an autumnal feel about the house .

I like to do seomthing too. Used to decorate for Halloween but don’t bother now - DS is a grumpy scathing teen. (My planet wrecking decorations went to the charity shop to be enjoyed by someone else - had some lovely bits.)

Last year I found various metal fruits and some wooden acorns and a pumpkin shaped candle in HomeSense and I just put them in a bowl on the table. Some autumnal candles either side. Looked ok.

70isalimitnotatarget my wreath is rather like this but without the purple bits.

I cut strips of tulle (ballet tutu material) into a couple of long strips and wrapped it all round the polystyrene wreath to cover it up.

I then cut up a bajillion small strips, tied each around the width of the wreath and tied a single knot. Rinse and repeat. Took a while but got the cool rough-edge look.

Bought a €3 crow/raven and hot glued him on.

Wrote "nevermore" on a small piece of card and aged it with teabags, glued that on too. It references the poem The Raven by Edgar Allen Poe. Super spooky and no tacky plastic skeletons anywhere.

Oh, when autumn really gets going, every pue (be it pumpkin, apple or chicken!) is referred to as Edgar Allen Pie Grin

I have a huge metal pumpkin (bought from HomeSense years ago) that I put an LED candle in, it's lovely (and re-useable each year)

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 14/09/2018 21:41

Love it El (I keep thinking about The Simpsons TreeHouse of Horror when I see ravens Grin )

I have some creepy lifesized ravens with light up red eyes and some tiny ones (not light up) that perch in my Hallowe'en Tree .

dontcallmelen · 14/09/2018 21:42

I saw some autumn decorations in Lidl today, I was a bit surprised as didn’t know it was a thing.

elQuintoConyo · 14/09/2018 21:43

Hallowe'en Tree....? Ooooh!

Pinkyponkcustard · 14/09/2018 21:47

Ooh I love that wreath - it is gorgeous

sheepsheep · 14/09/2018 21:50

Had a pumpkin latte yet from Starbucks yet op?

I haven't. I think I am immune to the syrups they use. I just cannot taste the flavour that those drinks are supposed to be.

I love the Halloween wreath.

Yy home sense or tk max.

I don't do fall.. But go mad at Halloween. I adore it. Such an atmospheric time of year!! Gives me something to focus on rather than the fear and claustrophobic dark nights.... Halloween here is gentle primitive Halloween, cats spell books, bat's... Witches hats and brooms. No slasher crap.

Morethanthisprovincallife · 14/09/2018 21:54

The best shop for this was pottery barn and I'm furious they have stopped UK people even bloody browsing their website.

HypoCali · 14/09/2018 22:20

The fact that I can’t look at Pottery Barn enrages me too...WTF? Is it to do with different data laws between USA and UK? Maybe the only good thing to come out of Brexit is we might be able to look at PB again!

I love decorating for autumn but I don’t buy any reusable stuff, just dot various pumpkins around, bowls of apples and a wreath with faded hydrangeas, dried flowers etc.

Peridot1 · 15/09/2018 03:50

We can’t look at Pottery Barn??? Shock. I had no idea. They used to ship here too. Was tempted a few times.

cookiesandchocolate · 15/09/2018 05:23

Instagram.
So many pumpkins that aren't Halloween

Optimisticbanana · 15/09/2018 05:28

My 20 year old just made me watch a Zoella vlog.... there’s loads of Autumn stuff on there! Definitely worth a look. I’ve always fancied making an Autumn wreath.

counterpoint · 15/09/2018 05:52

I can't see if anyone else has mentioned them, but those dried out maize (corn) cobs with the different coloured kernels look lovely.

DelilahandDaisy · 15/09/2018 06:03

Have you not actually been in a shop or on the internet in the last decade? It is every-fucking-where. I lived in the US in the noughties and came home all full of rag pumpkins and those fake pumpkins you can carve, thinking it was all so unusual.... It was all here already. Try John Lewis for some excellent shit that would put the US to shame.

hlr1987 · 15/09/2018 06:13

I love this! My mum keeps getting DD to bring home conkers from the park so I'm gradually making a collection :) for inspiration I really like the rosesandrolltops blog, of you search autumn then she's got lots of wreath making or autumnal flower displays over the last few years, like www.rosesandrolltops.co.uk/2017/11/autumn-wreath-making.html?m=1 this one.

londonrach · 15/09/2018 06:23

Yanbu. Ive always done it before children. Try ldll they do nice pieces sometimes or go to germany. Loads there. Looks amazing. Show us what you do x

beepbeeprichie · 15/09/2018 06:53

YANBU OP! I enjoy celebrating every season. I get a lot of handmade things from Etsy- UK sellers have had some wonderful knitted pumpkins, felted ones and assorted autumnal stuff. Maybe try there?
@Delilah” where are the fake pumpkins you can carve here? I’ve been searching for them!! Nobody will ship from the US

sulflower · 15/09/2018 07:01

I'm too lazy to make anything but I have a basket with pine cones all year round and liberally douse them with cinnamon oil at Christmas Grin. I also have a lot of conkers dotted about various room as apparently they deter spiders, please do not tell me this is rubbish, I need to keep the faith! They are due for a refresh so a foray into the park soon will sort that.

inepon · 15/09/2018 07:12

I can't believe you've been told off for being a planet-wrecker and not prioritising feeding your kids Grin only on Mumsnet.

We decorate a bit for autumn and then it changes into Christmassy stuff. It just brightens everything up. Loads of people keep spring and summer flowers around all year long, everyone seems to do Christmas, so why can't others bring a taste of autumn inside?

You can get some beautiful long-lasting fake autumn ivy off Amazon. Garden centres sometimes have great things too. It doesn't have to be expensive; last year we made salt-dough ornaments and paper leaves, painted them autumnal colours and golds, and strung them out along with pine cones.
