to wish decorating for autumn was a thing in the UK?

I want to decorate my house for autumn. A low key version of the way some people in the United States decorate for fall.

But it just isn't a thing here, so I can't really find any good stuff in the shops.

Or am I just looking in all the wrong places? In particular I would love some nice decorative pumpkins that aren't Halloween themed.

Shops seem to be going directly into Christmas, which annoys me. Why do we only get a two week window for Halloween stuff but a 4 month window for Christmas?

Grab a copy of this edition OP, some lovely ideas including an easy pumpkin wreath. I’m having a go. We always decorate for the equinox

Candles and jars display (not my image although I’ve made sure each photo does have the owners copyright on it)

I think it's a nice idea but why not use natural autumnal things, rather than fake pumpkins? There are lots of cones and conkers and gorgeous leaves to collect right now.

For the last few years I've got into the habit of threading the conkers that my kids collect on a string and hang it over the fireplace like a very low key swag - it doesn't require any crafting skills, other than the ability to make holes in conkers (I use a tiny hand drill shaped as a pen).

Why is being a planet wrecker funny?

It isn't.

I decorate my fireplace for all 4 seasons. I love my autumn one. Try country baskets for autumnal florals. I think I got my pumpkin picks from there.

I'm currently working on my autumn wreath for this year. Will be off shopping tomorrow to get various shades of brown, orange and gold paint.

Sorry, never heard of ‘dressing for autumn’. What does it actually involve?

I would like some realistic fake pumpkins to bring out each year. I also like the rag/fabric ones that they have in the US.

They could then be added to with the real ones.

We have never been able to find any conkers...and the pine cones near us aren't the regular type. I have spent years scouring woods etc near us and still nothing. I would love some real conkers but I haven't seen any for years. Obviously looking in the wrong places.

That magazine looks amazing and the display with the candles is beautiful.

One year my mother collected autumn leaves in different shades and put them on a decorative tray she keeps on the coffee table. Seasonal but subtle, and nothing that will take a billion years to break down in landfill

RiceButt

That looks so lovely and cosy.

We have a beautiful fireplace with a stove but I am at a loss decor wise.

I don't know the answer to your question op. I find I'm too busy keeping us all fed and watered and in clean clothes and the domestic stuff going and the mortgage paid and the dc attended to, to bother about a few non Halloween pumpkins in my house.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 14/09/2018 21:03

my Hallowe'en wreath is epic Grin

My life is missing a Hallowe'en wreath .
I have a gorgeous prelit Christmas Wreath , I do a red-tibbon tied ivy one
I have a couple of Easter wreaths (one I made with pastel fake eggs and one I bought with those tiny yellow chicks)

Hallowe'en Wreath ideas are welcome Grin Must be do-able by me (I'm not really crafty) and No Glitter .

Lidl often sell seasonal felt decorations, I was just thinking today that it's time to get mine down!

Home Sense/TKMaxx are good places to pick up decorative (non-orange) pumpkins and similar decorations. Places like Sainsburys go mad at Halloween with decorations now!

If you have a particular colour scheme in mind somewhere like Hobbycraft might have craft items you can paint/decorate as you wish.

I find I'm too busy keeping us all fed and watered and in clean clothes and the domestic stuff going and the mortgage paid and the dc attended to, to bother about a few non Halloween pumpkins in my house.

I am busy with all that stuff too, but if I let myself get bogged down in it I hate the house and don't want to spend time with the kids and will eventually end up in depression again.

So you know, I try to find something nice to focus on to get me through the mundane bollocks.

I forgot the obligatory disclaimers didn't I. Out of practice with posting on here you see.

*This isn't all I have to occupy myself, it is just one thread.

*I am not a planet wrecker...well no more than the rest of the people on this planet.

*I am capable of appreciating nature as well as buying fake pumpkins.

:o This is fun.

I decorate for autumn (twigs with felt autumn leaves, real acorn caps with felted tops, fabric toadstools and squash) but I'm German and it's a thing there. It reminds me of home-I've lived in England for the last 15 years. Etsy has some beautiful things.

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 14/09/2018 21:18

@A580Hojas🏅Dont forget to pop over to the style and beauty threads to have a passive aggressive pop at the posters who spend time and money going to get their hair cut/styled/dyed and their nails done.

Scotinoz · 14/09/2018 21:18

TKMaxx and Homesemse have great Fall things 🙂

almondsareforevermore · 14/09/2018 21:21

Ok, so we decorate with supermarket tatt for spring, summer, autumn and winter. Plus Easter, Christmas and Hallow’een. Plus birthdays.
Can I add 29th February and bank holidays too?

YoThePussy · 14/09/2018 21:22

I have had a vase of dried teasels on my mantlepiece for months. Waited until the goldfinches had eaten the bits they like then harvested them last spring. Feeling inspired to do something with them now having read your post OP.

Bring on the gold spray.

GerdaLovesLili · 14/09/2018 21:26

TK Maxx is your friend here. God knows why.

delphguelph · 14/09/2018 21:26

Had a pumpkin latte yet from Starbucks yet op?

Right up your street I reckon 🎃🎃🎃
