To have a fag in my garden if I want to?

I only smoke in my garden, never in the street or anywhere else. A footpath runs along the side of it adjoining a woodland area. Footpath is a short cut to supermarket, doctors, hairdressers. I smoke in the alleyway at the side of my garden which runs adjacent with the footpath.

I am getting sick of random people making loud comments when they pass by my fence like 'that stink is disgusting, ohh someone's smoking eurgghh' and etc.

WIBU to shout over to the next person to fuck off away from my fence if it bothers them rather than pausing and making comments?

OP posts:

pollutes

Aspenfrost · 14/09/2018 14:07

have

TheWinterofOurDiscountTentsMk2 · 14/09/2018 14:08

as I said, it doesn't matter either way

Aspenfrost · 14/09/2018 14:09

I can completely understand the comments of the passers by. I do that sort of thing. Smoking is disgusting and it pollutes the air around the person. Other people then have no choice but to be contaminated by it. Urgh

IncyWincyGrownUp · 14/09/2018 14:10

I’m another who thinks that smoking shouldn’t be permitted anywhere other than private residences.

I thinks smokers who refuse to smoke in their homes are hypocritical arseholes.

AustralianMumof2 · 14/09/2018 14:13

Pp who said alcohol isn’t anti-social. Thanks for the giggle.
You are not being unreasonable. Why doesn’t anyone mind their own business anymore!!!???

Gersemi · 14/09/2018 14:14

It's your garden! Tell them to do one.

It's not OP's pathway.

PlatypusPie · 14/09/2018 14:15

If it is a mesh link fence and people are looking right at you smoking and catching your eye and then making loud comments - that would be rude. If the fence is solid, you cannot see them, they can’t see you, they just become aware of cigarette smoke ( because it is wafting over, the smell doesn’t magically come over separately from the smoke) and they find it offensive - then they are perfectly at liberty to make a comment in a public place.

butterflysugarbaby · 14/09/2018 14:16

YANBU @Womaninchains

They sound like dicks, who are not even affected by the smoke.

Just carry on and ignore them.

My neighbours smoke - and it's private rent and the landlord doesn't allow it in the house, so they do it in the garden. But they are hardly in, as they work long-ish hours, so maybe 3 or 4 times a day we will smell of ciggie smoke wafting over to us. Not too bothered about it actually, as it doesn't affect me much.

As for the comments about passers-by having to put up with it. Give over! It would not have affected them for more than a few seconds. Some people are just whingeing arseholes.

Don't smoke in your house. A house smells vile when people smoke in there.

I am not a smoker btw, and never have been.

butterflysugarbaby · 14/09/2018 14:18

And there is nothing wrong or hypocritical about smokers wanting to smoke outside, (and not wanting to smoke in their house.) The smell of smoke would linger, and stick to the curtains and carpets and soft furnishings. Not exactly rocket science is it, to see why smokers don't always want to smoke in their house?!

Celestia26 · 14/09/2018 14:19

All these smokers who are saying drinking alcohol or driving a car is just as bad.....

Assuming you don't drive a car, take a bus or drink any alcohol at all then?

These people know smoking is bad for them and others around them, but unfortunately they are addicted and kid themselves that they do it because they enjoy it.

The world is moving towards a smoke free future, and thank God for that. Soon, all the smokers will have died out (probably from lung cancer or emphysema), and future generations will look back on this filthy disgusting habit in amazement and horror that people actually did this to themselves voluntarily.

Gersemi · 14/09/2018 14:19

I smoke in the alley so my neighbours don't get the smell. It's doesn't affect people passing by. They can just move.

Clearly it does, or they wouldn't comment. You have to accept the reality that cigarette smoke smells horrible and it will affect people who have to walk through it.

And, of course, by the same token, if their comment affects you, you can just move. Why don't you just smoke in your house?

Thinking of putting a sign up on the fence now. 'Yes I'm smoking, it's legal and its not affecting you so move away, twats!'

I'm afraid if I saw that I would think it was the person who put the sign up who was the twat.

ppeatfruit · 14/09/2018 14:22

Yes Aspen and it pollutes the person, they stink when they've had a fag on the platform and then walk back into the train.

ButchyRestingFace · 14/09/2018 14:23

I still haven’t worked out whether OP is smoking in her garden or public ground yet. BlushGrin

Valanice1989 · 14/09/2018 14:25

Smoking revenue exceeds the cost to the NHS for treating smoking related diseases

Does that include the cost of treatment for cancer, respiratory problems, etc. among children whose parents smoke?

ManicUnicorn · 14/09/2018 14:27

Smokers really have no idea just how much they and their filthy habit stink. If I have the misfortune to be stood near someone smoking it's hurts my chest and makes my eyes water.

And alcohol isn't anywhere near comparable.

LIVVI1234 · 14/09/2018 14:28

I'm not a smoker but some people need to get over themselves. I don't love the smell of smoke either but if someone wants to smoke in their garden, let them smoke. I think the people walking by are being unreasonable OP - I bet they wouldn't comment on the smell of alcohol if they were walking past a beer garden or similar, or comment on smell of a barbecue. People are so righteous. I'd love to know the lifestyles of some of the commenters on the thread- I'm sure there all perfect non smokers, non drinking specimens in perfect health.

Izzygrey · 14/09/2018 14:28

I only think it's rude if they're shouting AT you. If they're just commenting to each other than I think they're entitled to do that. Cigarette smoke does smell horrible and walking through a cloud of smoke isn't pleasant for most people

QueenoftheNights · 14/09/2018 14:28

The smell of smoke would linger, and stick to the curtains and carpets and soft furnishings. Not exactly rocket science is it, to see why smokers don't always want to smoke in their house?!

So how is it acceptable for smokers to create a cloud of smoke that non smokers have to walk through or by? It makes clean hair smell of smoke and can linger on clothes for hours. If I liked smelling of smoke I'd like a fag and waft it around me.

Destinysdaughter · 14/09/2018 14:31

If you switch to e-cigarettes you can vape indoors. Problem solved! 😀💜

JellyBears · 14/09/2018 14:31

It is disgusting though, every evening and morning I can hear the neighbors in my apartment block go on to their balcony smoking away it stinks and then the delightful sound of their smokers cough grim.

But it’s their balcony and it’s your garden so ignore.

butterflysugarbaby · 14/09/2018 14:32

Do get a grip @Queenofnights

Bluelady · 14/09/2018 14:32

No, Manic, tobacco and alcohol aren't comparable. Smokers don't start fights, vomit all over pavements, get into cars after a fag and endanger other people's lives. Makes smoking look quite innocuous.

Lweji · 14/09/2018 14:32

Funny an early poster said that smoking drugs is worse

It's not. I prefer the smell of weed to that of tobacco.
I smoke neither, btw.

And there is nothing wrong or hypocritical about smokers wanting to smoke outside, (and not wanting to smoke in their house.) The smell of smoke would linger, and stick to the curtains and carpets and soft furnishings.

Isn't that the definition of hypocritical?

Valanice1989 · 14/09/2018 14:32

Does that include the cost of treatment for cancer, respiratory problems, etc. among children whose parents smoke?

I forgot to add the cost of additional help for children who have SEN because their mothers smoked during pregnancy. Some of them will require care for the rest of their lives.
