To have a fag in my garden if I want to?

I only smoke in my garden, never in the street or anywhere else. A footpath runs along the side of it adjoining a woodland area. Footpath is a short cut to supermarket, doctors, hairdressers. I smoke in the alleyway at the side of my garden which runs adjacent with the footpath.

I am getting sick of random people making loud comments when they pass by my fence like 'that stink is disgusting, ohh someone's smoking eurgghh' and etc.

WIBU to shout over to the next person to fuck off away from my fence if it bothers them rather than pausing and making comments?

I'm glad smokers feel uncomfortable in public.

They've certainly made others uncomfortable and it's about time.

Gersemi · 14/09/2018 14:36

'm not a smoker but some people need to get over themselves. I don't love the smell of smoke either but if someone wants to smoke in their garden, let them smoke.

And if someone wants to comment on it, let them comment? If not, why not?

I think the people walking by are being unreasonable OP - I bet they wouldn't comment on the smell of alcohol if they were walking past a beer garden or similar, or comment on smell of a barbecue.

They probably would, if it was as objectionable as cigarette smoke.

Elementtree · 14/09/2018 14:36

Meh, you can smoke, they can whinge. You can whinge that they are whinging. Preferably, everyone could just toughen the fuck up though.

Gersemi · 14/09/2018 14:37

Butterfly, nothing that QueenofNights said was incorrect. What does she need to get a grip on?

ManicUnicorn · 14/09/2018 14:39

Stupid comparison, as has been stated on here ad nauseum Bluelady. Most people drink responsibly, and as far as I'm aware there's no such think as passive alcohol consumption anyway. You might be quite happy to give yourself cancer, but having had several family members die from lung cancer I'd rather live a long and healthy life thanks very much.

Pressuredrip · 14/09/2018 14:40

My neighbours smokes all day long right outside their backdoor which is under our kitchen, living room and bathroom window meaning we can't have windows open at all or the whole house stinks of fags. It's really fucking annoying. I do make grumbling comments as I slam the window shut after a shower but I don't think they hear me or would care anyway. People have just as much right to comment out loud it's disgusting as you do to smoke in your own garden.

Madwithjealousy · 14/09/2018 14:40

Just ban smoking - there is absolutely no point to it, not a single benefit to the smoker, it fucking stinks, people look ridiculous with their little dummies !

firehousedog1 · 14/09/2018 14:44

Your house is your castle. Do what you want I say.

Bluelady · 14/09/2018 14:57

I'm a non smoker, Manic.

JacquesHammer · 14/09/2018 14:58

No, Manic, tobacco and alcohol aren't comparable. Smokers don't start fights, vomit all over pavements, get into cars after a fag and endanger other people's lives. Makes smoking look quite innocuous

You keep missing the point spectacularly.

Bluelady · 14/09/2018 15:03

I don't think I do.

cactusplant · 14/09/2018 15:07

Surely they are entitled to their opinion? I can't stand the smell of smoke.

chocolateworshipper · 14/09/2018 15:17

Don't worry - no-one will be able to afford to smoke after Brexit www.retail-insight-network.com/comment/brexit-lead-big-cigarette-price-increases-britain/

Storm4star · 14/09/2018 15:22

Don't worry - no-one will be able to afford to smoke after Brexit

I don't know a lot of people, myself included, that buy cigarettes from British stores now. The people with lower incomes I know buy them from "dodgy dealers". Those of us with a bit more money stock up abroad. And Brexit means the return of duty free!

In fact I often wonder, when they calculate how many people smoke now whether they base it on the sale of cigarettes? If so, their figures are skewed for the above reason.

QueenoftheNights · 14/09/2018 15:24

@butterflysugarbaby
Can you explain your get a grip comment to me please?

Are you saying it's untrue that clothes and hair smell of smoke after walking through someone's smoke?

I am old enough to have sat through smokers in the cinemas, pubs, top decks of buses, trains, offices, and more.

Thank God smoking is banned in public now. But smokers still pollute the air and walking through a cloud of it is not pleasant. It lingers on clothes.

Mummyoflittledragon · 14/09/2018 15:26

So you smoke in the alley way. I assume it’s relatively narrow with fences or hedges either side. As a result the smoke tends to get trapped more and will linger for longer. You’re smoking there because you don’t want to piss your neighbour off but I think it would probably be better at the far end of your garden as it will disperse quicker. Dh is smoking again and he goes to the bottom of the garden. No one really smells it there as our garden is pretty long.

Mummyoflittledragon · 14/09/2018 15:28

Brexit means the return of duty free
Yes but it also means a very low cap on the number of packs legally allowed in the country for personal consumption.

BarbarianMum · 14/09/2018 15:30

Surely the answer would be to smoke in your house?

Storm4star · 14/09/2018 15:32

Yes well there's no limit on the amount you can buy in a duty free store, and they only know you've gone over if they stop you. Even then you wouldn't get arrested. Just given the choice to pay the duty or hand them over.

Purpleartichoke · 14/09/2018 15:33

Legally you can smoke in your garden.

Legally and morally people can and will think you are a complete and utter jerk for doing so.

Mummyoflittledragon · 14/09/2018 15:42

Storm
Really? It’s a long time since I bought duty free fags but I remember at the airport / shuttle etc you had to show your ticket / boarding pass and could only buy 200 per person.

I know if you buy in the actual country you can get away with it as long as you aren’t caught. But that’s not the same as duty free as I don’t think European tobacconists are allowed to sell minus the duty.

There will be a cap on the number of cigarettes allowed. I was a smoker when the 200 / 400 (cant remember) cap was abolished and I was overjoyed as we could bring some back from France.

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 14/09/2018 15:54

Duty free goods were never unlimited?

Storm4star · 14/09/2018 15:57

You do have to show your boarding pass but you can buy more than 200. I think maybe once the sales assistant commented something like "you know the uk limit is 200?" (whilst she was selling me 1000!) and I just smiled and said yes, and she shrugged and put it through.
Obviously while we've been in the EU, I have gone to places such as Bulgaria and bought them in the shops there (as they're only £2 a pack in the shops) but that will change after Brexit. But equally I have come back from holidays outside the EU recently and bought more than 200 in the duty free stores.

AllesAusLiebe · 14/09/2018 15:58

I haven’t read the whole thread but just tell them to fuck off, OP. You’re doing nothing wrong and some people really need to find other ways of occupying themselves rather than making pointless, stupid comments at someone who is doing something perfectly legal.

I hate people eating on public transport. I find it antisocial and rude, however, I don’t make remarks or tell others how ‘disgusting’ I find them because that would also be rude.

Smokers are, for some reason, always fair game for abuse and those who think this is ok really do need to have a look at themselves and identify what they’re missing in life to make them so fixated on what others choose to do.

*from an ex-smoker.

Jummers · 14/09/2018 16:00

My neighbour smokes in her garden. She knows it blows into our house and makes it stink but she simply doesn't care. This sums smokers up quite succinctly I think. Being a 'considerate smoker' is laughable, if you smoke anywhere, it's going to affect someone.
