To have a fag in my garden if I want to?

I only smoke in my garden, never in the street or anywhere else. A footpath runs along the side of it adjoining a woodland area. Footpath is a short cut to supermarket, doctors, hairdressers. I smoke in the alleyway at the side of my garden which runs adjacent with the footpath.

I am getting sick of random people making loud comments when they pass by my fence like 'that stink is disgusting, ohh someone's smoking eurgghh' and etc.

WIBU to shout over to the next person to fuck off away from my fence if it bothers them rather than pausing and making comments?

Angel We live in a free world

Tell that to the class A drug dealer, the person driving drunk, the person driving without set belts on etc etc.

Get real dear.

InertPotato · 20/09/2018 09:05

ASBOAngel

I imagine you sitting with a cider and a fag as you type. Wink

Lweji · 20/09/2018 09:08

I hope Angel is being sarcastic.

bananamonkey · 20/09/2018 09:22

Of course you can smoke in your garden. Smoking is gross but it's not illegal. My neighbour smokes outside her front door(she has a bench in a south facing sunny spot and they don't have a back garden). I hate it because the smell comes into our house even when the windows are shut but there's bugger all I can do about it so I shrug and move on with my day.

InertPotato · 20/09/2018 10:14

Broken sarcasm detector, I think you're right Lewji.

BloodyDisgrace · 20/09/2018 11:22

Enjoy your garden, where do you live? I might come round to smoke with you, or light a bonfire or not smoke and just play loud music, or have a dog that barks, or just bright lights! Please feel free to be free in your own garden xx

ahhahaa!! Excellent. Can I come too? No, seriously, some people are so precious, get irritated by everything (such as Wednesdays or courgettes), hate if someone stands or sits near them, that they really need this "bonfire+fag+barking dog" fest.

Gersemi · 20/09/2018 13:21

OP is of course free to have the bonfire/loud noise/barking dog party, but I would hope that, if she does, she is not going to object to anyone walking by commenting on it; nor, I hope, would she object if her neighbours have loud parties at 4 a.m., or send their children out to play loudly in the garden at 5 a.m., or have a bonfire that blows smoke all over her when she's sitting in her garden. And of course she would need to be happy to say goodbye to asking for help from her neighbours at any time.

ppeatfruit · 20/09/2018 16:44

I thought that there are bye laws about having bonfires, we're not free to have them .

Emmamummy1989 · 27/09/2018 18:36

Never mind smoking , car pollution is far worse for you , and that smoke is everywhere

ppeatfruit · 28/09/2018 08:41

But we don't deliberately put our mouths around an exhaust pipe and inhale it do we?

schoty77 · 01/10/2018 00:32

I'm always astounded how socially acceptable smoking (and to a lesser extent weed) is in the UK. Where I live now, it's considered very low class and disgusting. I don't know anyone who smokes.

I wouldn't outright say anything to a smoker, but I've overheard other parents tell them to piss off when they're smoking around schools and parks, and I'm fine with that. Not the crap I want my kids breathing in.

You have every right to smoke in your garden, but people also have the right to complain amongst themselves. Feel free to tell them to 'fuck off away from your fence' though... and enjoy your 'fags'... you sound a real treat.

ppeatfruit · 01/10/2018 09:15

Schoty It's still fairly common in Fr, which shocks me too, especially among the young who do it to rebel I suppose Sad Shock

DogMamma · 25/10/2018 17:23

whats jazz fag (PP on the first page said it)

second-hand smoke does stink.......(i smoke) i hate walking through someone's fag cloud. on a lighter note, everyone moaning about pollutants you're invited to sit in my lounge right now next to my 50kilo akita letting them rip after having liver for tea.....now that is toxic! Grin

GadsdenFlag · 25/10/2018 17:40

@DogMamma - a jazz fag is a joint.

It's up to op what she does on her property imho

HotSauceCommittee · 25/10/2018 18:07

Bloody Hell, you should be able to have a quiet fag in your garden. Switch to a vape and I’ll garuntee some fucker will be bitching about that too.

OrigamiZoo · 10/12/2018 00:28

Wear earplugs. Seriously, the silence from the outside world is the only way.

fuzzyduck1 · 14/12/2018 20:27

Its a smelly, anti social, filthy dangerous habit that kills people, costs society a huge amount of money and has zero benefits of any kind

If you take away the word smelly you could say the same of alcohol. Shall we ban that too?

I think you’ll find since the ban on smoking has come into force there has been more pubs close as people stay at home and drink where they can Haagen a cigarette in peace! They band it from inside so the smokers moved outside then the anti smoker moaned about it there to.

So were all anti social as the non smokers don’t go to the pub any more either.

Philomensapie · 14/12/2018 20:30

Babdoc it's her own garden. Where would you like her to smoke? Xmas Hmm

Philomensapie · 14/12/2018 20:37

Creeper we have an alleyway in our garden. It runs along the side of the house and stops at the DC's bedroom. The house is a kind of L shape.

Rockmysocks · 14/12/2018 21:26

I quite like the smell of cigarette smoke providing I'm not too close to it! I'm more concerned about diesel particulates than the odd far cloud that diffuses around me from time to him.

Often wonder how much the nhs benefits from the taxes smokers pay for every packet of fags!

Enjoy a smoke in your own garden! Dear God, those other people are passing though an alley and not intubated like smoking beagles.

Cigarette pollution is the least of air pollution worries.

PirateWeasel · 15/12/2018 06:52

If someone is smoking near me I move away. Simples. Remember life before the smoking ban, when every trip to the pub etc. required a shower to get rid of the stink? At least it's not that bad now. I really couldn't get het up about someone smoking in their own garden unless I lived nextdoor.

Stumpy0907 · 10/01/2019 21:29

Reading some of these comments makes me really appreciate my neighbours! Myself & my partner smoke in OUR garden and we have a dog that barks at every given thing. Also, if our recycling bin gets to full my partner quite often has a small bonfire in the back garden! Our neighbours often come round for a crafty fag and a beer around the mini bonfire whilst playing with the loud barking dog.
Thank god we don't live near you lot!

jessstan2 · 10/01/2019 22:32

I don't think you are doing anything wrong and the people shouting out are simply rude. A tiny whiff of smoke is not going to hurt them, presumably they go on their way and only smell it in passing.

I'm more than happy for anyone to smoke in my back garden.

BeanTownNancy · 11/01/2019 09:15

I'm asthmatic and additionally I'm allergic to nightshades (including tobacco). Breathing in cigarette smoke instantly triggers a coughing reflex (and sometimes hives) because I'm just that sensitive to it. I've been frequently been laughed at and told to "fuck off" by smokers who think I'm being overly dramatic to make a point.

A tiny puff of smoke can hurt people, in the same way a single peanut can kill others. I try to avoid it when I can but it is pretty much impossible. Sucks to be me.

Whizbang · 11/01/2019 09:57

Do what you want in your own garden OP. Tell the annoying tutters walking past to mind their own business.
