To have a fag in my garden if I want to?

I only smoke in my garden, never in the street or anywhere else. A footpath runs along the side of it adjoining a woodland area. Footpath is a short cut to supermarket, doctors, hairdressers. I smoke in the alleyway at the side of my garden which runs adjacent with the footpath.

I am getting sick of random people making loud comments when they pass by my fence like 'that stink is disgusting, ohh someone's smoking eurgghh' and etc.

WIBU to shout over to the next person to fuck off away from my fence if it bothers them rather than pausing and making comments?

I need a diagram Smile please

I hate the smell of cigarette smoke, you've just made me realise I haven't smelled it for years due to the smoking ban!
If I was to go past your garden, I'd probably screw my nose up until I passed and think "ugh" but if you're in your own garden you're on private property and it's your choice!

Thinking of putting a sign up on the fence now. 'Yes I'm smoking, it's legal and its not affecting you so move away, twats!'

How do you know it's not affecting them? If they can smell your fag smoke, they are v likely imbibing your noxious second hand fumes.

“How bad can it smell in the open air, that loads of people walking past express their disgust? Seriously, how many people are we actually talking about here?”

Well there’s literally a fence separating her walkway around her house and the public footpath. So pretty much like standing next to her. Next door neighbours had painters in over the summer. Painting their exterior windows. We had to shut all the windows/doors and stay inside because their smoking was stinking up our house 70 feet away. Our other neighbour (so 2 houses down) had to do the same, so 200 feet. There was only a couple of men, so I’ve no idea if they were chain smoking or the hot weather made it worse Sad

Alpacanorange · 14/09/2018 13:07

Smoking does smell gross.... just as being a tightrope walker is dangerous.
Ignore their shit.

Alpacanorange · 14/09/2018 13:09

Reply.... “yeah but it does feel gooooodddddd” I’m a non smoker and it doesn’t smell great but I’m all for freedom and it’s your garden.

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 14/09/2018 13:11

just remind yourself that people like that would have been burning witches in medieval times

MN is really weird today.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 14/09/2018 13:12

Useful link here about the tax/cost balance of smoking ... probably as close as we can get to facts as opposed to propaganda:

Well, my own related update is that my cleaner arrived as per this morning, in pain from her tennis, or is it golfer's elbow and is sporting a support bandage. The dr. has prescribed painkillers & gel, ive suggested she buy glucosamine for her joints from Savers as a medium term solution but to look at Vitamins Direct to read about joint/muscle health and buy from them long term.
And short term I told her to rest her arm, gave her coffee and invited her to light up if she wanted, and we'll get back on track with my cleaning whenever.
Oh! and my inhalers and meds keep my own asthma etc under control, no probs. If they didn't I'd be inclined to see my breathing specialist rather than try to impose a blanket ban on smokers within a 100 mile radius like some might want. FFS.

Bluelady · 14/09/2018 13:31

You beat me to it, Puzzled. Add to that the saving in pensions from smokers dying prematurely and they're definitely subsidising the rest of us.

ppeatfruit · 14/09/2018 13:34

Funny an early poster said that smoking drugs is worse Grin LOL (I hate that abbreviation but it really is funny) because tobacco, especially the commercially produced cigarrettes, are deliberately highly addictive , more so than heroin.

Why do all the smokers on this thread do it regardless of it's unpleasantness, which they are, of course, fully aware of? Because they are hooked . Some of the ex smokers are still hooked, they LIKE the smell !!! Fags consist of all sorts of added poisons like gunpwder and arsenic etc. They are drugs.

AllyMcBeagle · 14/09/2018 13:35

Does anybody actually want to smoke though? I get that people are addicted to it, but most smokers I know say they would rather quit but have not been able to do so. If it were banned it would take away the temptation.

I would be quite happy if the Government were to ban my vices and take the temptation away from me.

DiegoMad0nna · 14/09/2018 13:38

You have every right to smoke in your garden. And they have every right to walk past on a public path and comment on the bad smell.

stevie69 · 14/09/2018 13:47

o you couldn't. Is alcohol filthy? No. Do people leave the ends of pints all over the street? Is it anti-social or is it actually very social? Alcohol has definite benefits
Poor analogy, try again.

Nah, they just leave pools of vomit all over the city when they've had too much Hmm

stevie69 · 14/09/2018 13:48

I would be quite happy if the Government were to ban my vices and take the temptation away from me.

Really? Don't you think that it would be a pretty dull world without a few vices?

Bluelady · 14/09/2018 13:50

Liking the smell of cigarette smoke hardly indicates addiction. My mum loved the smell and had given up for nearly 60 years.

londonrach · 14/09/2018 13:52

Both of you have a right here. You have right to smoke in your garden, they have a right to truthfully say it stinks. Anyone who doesnt say it out loud is thinking it anyway. You can always smell a smoker even if they arent smoking.

AllyMcBeagle · 14/09/2018 13:54

Really? Don't you think that it would be a pretty dull world without a few vices?

No. I don't have many. I eat a bit too much sugar and salt and could be less sedentary, but I don't drink/smoke/take drugs/use prostitutes/gamble or anything else. The junk food I have does not improve my enjoyment in life other than whilst I am eating it, which is a very temporary pleasure. I would be generally happier I think if I had to rely less on willpower to make healthy choices.

Mia1415 · 14/09/2018 13:58

Thinking of putting a sign up on the fence now. 'Yes I'm smoking, it's legal and its not affecting you so move away, twats!'

It obviously is affecting people if they keep commenting on it!

It is as much your right to smoke in your garden as it is for people to comment on how horrible it is.

magpie24 · 14/09/2018 14:00

I don't think you are being unreasonable but my neighbour smokes a lot in his garden and it wafts into my living room (sometimes even with windows closed - not sure how) which is gross, particularly as I'm 8 months pregnant

TheWinterofOurDiscountTentsMk2 · 14/09/2018 14:01

Thinking of putting a sign up on the fence now. 'Yes I'm smoking, it's legal and its not affecting you so move away, twats!

You could, but then you'd be the twat.

Not sure what you are not getting about this simple fact: you can smoke in your garden, passers by can comment on said smoke if they want to. What has you so confused?

TheWinterofOurDiscountTentsMk2 · 14/09/2018 14:03

Those of you who would like smoking to be illegal might think about where the treasury might look to fill the tax deficit. Smoking revenue exceeds the cost to the NHS for treating smoking related diseases

hasn't that factoid been debunked?
Not that it matters anyway, I'd rather have the relatives alive that were killed by smoking related diseases (my father recently died of lung cancer) than prop up the government coffers with the money they used to kill themselves.

UnderMajorDomoMinor · 14/09/2018 14:05

Do you think it’s the same person/few people who use the alley a lot? If so one ‘fuck off’ will probably stop it as these high horse people tend to be terribly sensitive and huffy.

Aspenfrost · 14/09/2018 14:07

I can completely understand the comments of the passers by. I do that sort of thing. Smoking is disgusting and it polluted the air around the person. Other people then gave to be contaminated by it. Urgh

Bluelady · 14/09/2018 14:07

No, Winter, it hasn't and there's a support link upthread.
