To have a fag in my garden if I want to?

I only smoke in my garden, never in the street or anywhere else. A footpath runs along the side of it adjoining a woodland area. Footpath is a short cut to supermarket, doctors, hairdressers. I smoke in the alleyway at the side of my garden which runs adjacent with the footpath.

I am getting sick of random people making loud comments when they pass by my fence like 'that stink is disgusting, ohh someone's smoking eurgghh' and etc.

WIBU to shout over to the next person to fuck off away from my fence if it bothers them rather than pausing and making comments?

I champion No.3 option!

lexer · 14/09/2018 11:55

I agree with Jacques Hammer - own home only.

AllyMcBeagle · 14/09/2018 11:59

Smoking revenue exceeds the cost to the NHS for treating smoking related diseases.

The cost to the NHS is not the only cost though. There is also the cost of things like the Fire Brigade having to attend smoking-related fires and the loss of productivity to the economy. However, the last I read is that smoking does now save the public purse a little bit of money because so many smokers die early and therefore do not claim their pensions for long (or sometimes at all).

It is a grim habit.

Bluelady · 14/09/2018 12:00

So, it wasn't you I was talking about, Jacques! Some pp have said they want smoking banned completely.

themuttsnutts · 14/09/2018 12:00

Say, I can hear you, you know. Often people make these comments not expecting a response

Lweji · 14/09/2018 12:02

Think we need a diagram, OP!

Complete with wind speed and direction.

PawneeParksDept · 14/09/2018 12:03

I'm glad you started this thread OP I occasionally smoke out the back, and you know when you just want to have a bit of a quiet think and a fag?

I have a neighbour whose kitchen window faces in and literally whenever I step out he shrieks :

HIYA PAWNEE!!!!

or

Just HIYAAAAAAA

Every. Single. Time. Even if he's said Hello earlier.

dd gets an asthma attack if she has to walk through smoke. so I am also wishing smokng was banned permanently or more restricted. eg at the hospital it is no smoking but people hang round the car park stairs and entrances smoling so we can not avoid. much better to put a smoking somewhere in the grounds that can be avoided.

Lweji · 14/09/2018 12:04

If every (or most) people who are passing by are complaining/ voicing their opinions then it must be having an impact on them (wafting in their faces as they walk though it).

Or... maybe it's the same person walking up and down the passage just to annoy the OP.

LanguidLobster · 14/09/2018 12:04

Pawnee he obviously loves you Grin

BlackeyedSusan · 14/09/2018 12:05

would cost less in asthma drugs and a and e admissions though.

PawneeParksDept · 14/09/2018 12:07

The ardour is very much not returned @LanguidLobster Grin

KurriKurri · 14/09/2018 12:10

In my head I am singing
'It's my garden
And I'll smoke if I want to'

to the tune of 'It's my party'

Maybe you could get a sign with that on it OP Grin

wurzelburga · 14/09/2018 12:17

OP - just remind yourself that people like that would have been burning witches in medieval times. The problem with the anti smoking lobby is that it gives the intolerant an excuse for their intolerance.

KingLooieCatz · 14/09/2018 12:20

@Bluelady

Smoking revenue exceeds the cost to the NHS for treating smoking related diseases

Source please? This is tobacco industry propaganda.

Half of all smokers will die from a smoking related illness. Governments around the world are working to reduce the number of people smoking to as few as possible. Smoking is a huge burden on the world economy. It's bad for the environment from tobacco growing all the way to through to discarded cigarette butts and the tobacco industry uses child labour.

DiegoMad0nna · 14/09/2018 12:20

WIBU for them to shout back fuck off away from this public path if the comments bother you, rather than getting angry and shouting?

ADastardlyThing · 14/09/2018 12:21

Oh just ignore them op. Think of them as similar to performance parents - talking for other people's benefit but no one actually gives a shiny shite.

agedknees · 14/09/2018 12:22

Why don’t you smoke in your house?

LeftRightCentre · 14/09/2018 12:27

Just ignore them.

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 14/09/2018 12:35

Why don’t you smoke in your house?

Probably the same reason my stupid neighbour spouts when he stands in his front or back garden, letting the smell waft into my home:

"I don't want my house to smell like smoke!"

I think the irony is well and truly lost on him Hmm

GabsAlot · 14/09/2018 12:37

why does noone shout out turn your engine off to people idling in cars?

its been proven its worse than passive smoking death rates and asthma have risen

AngeloMysterioso · 14/09/2018 12:39

Those of you who would like smoking to be illegal might think about where the treasury might look to fill the tax deficit. Smoking revenue exceeds the cost to the NHS for treating smoking related diseases.

Which in no way makes it worth it for all the people actually suffering from said diseases. Especially if they didn't bring it on themselves.

I'd happily pay more tax to make up for any revenue lost by banning cigarettes. Small price to pay as far as I'm concerned.

GunpowderGelatine · 14/09/2018 12:42

If you're gonna smoke and blow the vile smell everywhere expect people to be pissed off.

Fireworks91 · 14/09/2018 12:43

Aviator presumably 'Madge's' house is bigger than average, and as such a night of smoking isn't quite as likely to fill it with smoke to the extent that it would an average house? And one must have servants to deal with the remnants, airing the building etc? I used to smoke, but never in a million years will anyone smoke in the perfectly average house that my children have to live in.

Bobaboutwhat · 14/09/2018 12:45

OP I know how you feel, I don’t smoke anymore but when I did I would always feel a bit uncomfortable about the smoke blowing in to neighbours gardens. I used to live somewhere that had a long drive and I was smoking near the house. The postman came up and said aggressively - ‘I could smell that all the way from the bottom of the drive and gave a disapproving look’. I felt so ashamed even though 30 at the time, and then really pissed off because I was being judged on my own property for having a fag! To sum up - no you bloody shouldn’t feel bad about smoking on your land because members of the public may walk past parallel to you! You’ve said you smoke there to be considerate to your neighbours. But...have you tried vaping? Only way I could give up (if you want to - won’t preach!)
