Told him to PISS OFF!!

Had yet another phone call telling me that my internet had been hacked by someone in America, and if I hand over my computer access to this person, they could "fix it". I told him I am sick to death of these scams, he told me to shut up, and I told him to PISS OFF! AIBU to think they will probably keep ringing all the time because I lost my temper.

I just hang up, if they call back I say I know they are a con and then hang up. One day I too will swear.

Harrykanesrightsock · 12/09/2018 08:48

Just say ‘oh god not again. Thank god my husband is head of The National Cyber Security Centre and has tapped our phone lines’

Cronesquerness · 12/09/2018 09:08

I had a guy from India call me and claim to want to 'fix my computer' I told him to 'bloody well not ring me again' and he said swearing was 'very bad' at which point I told him to fuck off and hung up. The phone rang again immediately and an Indian voice said 'this is the police station' I asked if it was the one in Mumbai and hung up. The phone rang again immediately and the original Indian bloke was there again asking me what my problem was. I hung up and now keep my house phone unplugged because it's only those type of calls I get on it. Jeeeeeez, bloody hell and being on the TPS makes no difference.

I told a cold caller to fuck off a few days ago. Apparently she had been given the details of the accident I had in February and was pleased to say she could help with my compensation. The only accident I had in February was with my contraception and the baby due in a few weeks is compensation enough for meGrin I was rude but I've been getting calls like that nearly every day. I've had the laptop one too. I don't own a laptop or computer.

Singlebutmarried · 12/09/2018 09:26

These calls are sport.

DH works in cyber security and goes along with it.

Best ones so far, caller asks what can you see on the screen.

The reply is whatever is the background, pic of child, London Bridge.

Can keep them going for ages, especially when you virtually go through the motions.

Last time DH got called rude and that he was a very smelly man 😂😂😂

scaryteacher · 12/09/2018 09:29

You get the Microsoft scammer calls here in Belgium too, so I speak to them in very bad Flemish, and claim not to speak English.

Hadalifeonce · 12/09/2018 09:35

I managed to keep the car accident one going 40 minutes once (very slow morning). I even got escalated to a senior handler, who told me he was working for my insurance co., although couldn't name it. He then gave me the name of the solicitors he was working for, before I told him I would ring back. I called the solicitors to advise them their company was being used in a scam, they were furious and after getting all the details vowed to do something. I haven't had a call since.

Creeper8 · 12/09/2018 09:35

My mum fell for this once Confused

GrumpyOlderBloke · 12/09/2018 09:42

I miss these now!

I am retired so have enough time to copy Mr @Singlebutmarried . I have found several of fellow coffin-dodgers engage in the same game.

The main landline is just to the right of the computer mouse, so when at the PC I would put the phone on speaker and play them along whilst continuing to scan whatever website I was on at the time.

Your recent accident - Which one? Your most recent one - You will have to remind me, my memory is so bad these days. The one you claim - I don't see so well these days and I often bump into things. The one that happened most soon - Is that the fatal one? Yes, that one - But I died in that one and it's a bit hard to remember the details. And so on.

But now TalkTalk added the call screening feature. Any new caller has to identify themselves and I press 1 to add them to the authorised list and get put through directly in future, 2 to allow this call but they still have to announce themselves in future and 3 the nuclear option of winning a latest position on the banned list.

Since then as soon as they hear the request to announce themselves they hang up, knowing to continue will just earn them a ban. As they hang up before announcing themselves I don't even know they called in the first place.

Boo Hoo, I miss engaging with Steve with that distinctive Mumbai accent.

I believe other providers also offer this feature - you may just need to scour their website to figure out how to enable it. With TalkTalk I had to login to my account to enable it.

Puggled · 12/09/2018 09:42

I got told off for wasting a caller's time: he got me to check for the windows key on my keyboard, but I explained that I didn't have one due to it being a mac.

GrumpyOlderBloke · 12/09/2018 09:44

@Hadalifeonce I'm jealous!

I have never got beyond 5 minutes. Can I sign up for one to one expert tuition?

Bluntness100 · 12/09/2018 09:46

I usually just say I don't have a computer, or no Wi-fi if it's the bt scam. They just hang up,

I've occasionally had fun with them but learned it just makes them call you back repeatedly if you get an arsey one.

Charm23 · 12/09/2018 09:47

We used to get loads of these annoying calls so we got the BT Call Guardian thing. I think we had to purchase a new phone and dock which cost about £30 but there's no monthly cost and its excellent as ALL the cold callers get blocked before the call even comes to you or they get put off by the Call Guardian asking them to announce their name etc. Safe numbers can be accepted, but any new numbers have to announce their name and then we get a "You have a call from.... Bob.... do you wish to accept this call? Press 1..."
Worth looking into... alternatively you can mess them about. Try keeping a book by the phone and any time they ring just ask them if they want to hear a story and start reading. They get very confused and soon give up :D

Hadalifeonce · 12/09/2018 09:49

I am almost disappointed at not having the option to do others; I haven't ever had the computer on though. One can but hope!

Letshopeitsallok · 12/09/2018 09:49

I’ve tried stringing along but got bored of playing dumb before they did and yelled “I know it’s a scam”. They called back.

I’ve tried leaving phone in front of TV till they hang up but they wait for ages and then call back.

Surprisingly asking “Does your family know you tell lies for a living?” stopped the calls.

Your milage may vary.

nannybeach · 12/09/2018 09:50

My DS who is a computer whizz kid, kept one of these scammers going for 20 minutes, he recorde the call on his PC, he added sound effects it was hilarious, but you need to know what you are doing, I found in the end, these scammers, with foreign sounding voices were actually using "local" dialing codes, so I would answer, (number shows on screen) most would say they were from the broadband provider, I now have a filter from them, they give name of provider say calls are being filtered, provie you name, then I get options, to accept, once, always, (goes into file) or never. I did actually have a call from this provider before the filter, thought it was a scam and slammed the phone down, they really were ringing me! I got so fed up because I was getting several every day.

NameChangeJustThisOnce1 · 12/09/2018 09:50

I always go along with it for the lols

Excited0803 · 12/09/2018 09:50

After 6 spam calls on one day, I told an accident-that-wasn't-your-fault woman that she should be ashamed of herself and get a proper job. She cried and said she was at university, that she knew it wasn't good but she needed money. I felt awful and ended up spending the next 20 minutes or so talking with her about her CV, options, how recruitment consultancies work etc. At least she wasn't crying when she got off the phone.

Talith · 12/09/2018 09:52

Just hang up the minute you suss its the same scam. You don't have to talk to them or tell them why you're hanging up or in any way continue to permit a conversation you didn't invite.

It's like when people open the door to chuggers and then spend ten minutes wringing their hands and explaining why they can't sign up - just don't open the bloody door!

Or when you DO open the door and someone asks you if your windows are less then ten years old or if you're the homeowner. We find ourselves volunteering all sorts of information without thinking before trying to extract ourselves out of a conversation we did not want to take part in in the first place. Correct answer is to smile and shake your head and close the door. Honestly even a "Sorry no" initiates more questions from their scripts!

Of course if it's sport to wind them up then enjoy yourself Grin

princesstiasmum · 12/09/2018 09:53

I have a whistle, and blow it very hard down the phone, thay dont ring back, have not had any for ages, just a couple of accident ones on my mobile

Rudgie47 · 12/09/2018 09:54

Just get an answerphone, that's what we have done.
As soon as they hear the message they just hang up. Before that we were getting 10-20 calls per day from India etc.

Fromage · 12/09/2018 09:56

Is it wrong that I feel sad I've never had one of these turnips call me?

I think I've missed an opportunity to wind up a scummy little scammer.

In the olden days, the advice was to keep a whistle next to the phone, and if you got a pervert heavy breathing at you and asking overly familiar questions about your underwear, you would blow the whistle loud as you like down the phone and deafen the little sicko.

You'd probably get sued for that now.

Talith · 12/09/2018 09:56

Excited that was pretty mean. I hope she was able to find something better with your advice.

I was in a call centre at Uni and I had to check information on file and that did mean phoning people who didn't want to be phoned. One woman said how sorry she was that I was stuck doing such a nasty job in a horrible place whilst she was sitting in her garden drinking wine. It made me cry! I hung up on her!

Just hang up / don't answer - they can log the call on their targets or whatever but at least you're not upsetting some poor sod who won't be doing this as their dream job. Obvs scams are criminal and I'd have less sympathy for them!

Arthuritis · 12/09/2018 09:56

We spent ages one day pretending to go along with him. We started tapping away on ur keyboard and pretending to do what he asked, but asking loads of questions as though we really didn't understand.

Went on for about 20 minutes until he got annoyed at which point he got told to " fuck off". Never got called again.

Dodie66 · 12/09/2018 09:56

My daughter played along with them a pretended to do what they were asking her to do on the computer until they realised that she wasn’t doing it. They then started saying a lot of horrible sexual comments so she swore at them and put the phone down. They then rang back with more sexual comments at whic point she made a comment back and put the phone down.
