To ask you to help me decipher this name?

Dd has come home from reception today and has made a new best friend called “Whiskers”.
“Whiskers” is definitely a girl and she has yellow hair.
I did ask if she was tabby but apparently not!!!
According to DD “Whiskers” is 100% her name.
Please help me decipher what it could be, as I can’t ask her what games she has played with “Whiskers” today whilst keeping a straight face.

Winter! That’s got to be the best suggestion so far!

My DBro said he knew a boy called "Shreddie" when he was little. It was actually Freddie!! I think he got confused as there was a Shreddies advert at the time that had a mum calling "Freddie, your shreddies are ready!"

ArtemisWeatherwax · 11/09/2018 16:18

This reminds me of the time DS4 had written a Christmas card to his "best friend" who I'd never heard of, who was in reception (DS was yr1). He insisted his name was Mike - none of the 3 reception teachers would claim a Mike. Ds then said Mike had yellow hair, red skin and a face like (imagine Ds making a screwed up face) and he had to have DS's card otherwise his christmas would be ruined. Second reception teacher said "oh I think I know who you mean" and finally accepted the card. I kept a good look out at the nativity but no one seemed to match the description of the poor unfortunate child.

Friend's aon made friends with tbe new boy Sven from Ireland. Turned out to be Sven but from Iceland not Ireland!

PolkerrisBeach · 11/09/2018 16:21

I was going to say Mishka, but it's a boy's name - or a diminutive of a boy's name - Mikhail.

You need to read the baby names board - regular threads along the lines of "What about James for a girl" or "Can't decide between Cameron, Blake, Jimmie, Maxwell or Jackson for my new baby daughter".

Using a boy's name on a girl is very much a thing in some areas. although the girl in this case is probably called something totally different. DD made friends with a kid on holiday a few years ago who said she was called Elsa. It was only a bit later on when DD met her mum that she discovered her name was actually Olivia....

onceuponakitchensink · 11/09/2018 16:22

OMG I’ve worked it out!
So basically Whiskers is actually a boy, called Winston.
I know his mum vaguely.
She’s insisting that Winston is 100% a girl with yellow curly hair.
In all fairness Winston does have blonde curly hair which is just above his shoulders!

When I was in reception class, I was utterly convinced my new best friend was called Doorknobs. It took my Mum a few weeks to realise her name was Dawn Hobbs.

PolkerrisBeach · 11/09/2018 16:24

If she won't accept that Whiskers is Winston, how's she going to manage the idea that Whiskers is a boy!!

auntyflonono · 11/09/2018 16:26

Hester?

CigarsofthePharoahs · 11/09/2018 16:26

When my eldest started preschool he told me he had two friends and they were called "Angry Boy" and "Pants".
He and Angry Boy enjoyed bellowing at eachother and he and Pants used to like shouting Pants at eachother.
There might be a cat theme due to a game they were playing.

yawning801 · 11/09/2018 16:27

When I was in reception class, I was utterly convinced my new best friend was called Doorknobs. It took my Mum a few weeks to realise her name was Dawn Hobbs.

Grin best one yet!

Poor little Winston though... saying that, my guess would have been Felix (since they're both brands of cat food!)

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 11/09/2018 16:27

Yeah, DD2 (now 14), 100% made a new friend in reception, she was definitely called Beetroot. Definitely not Beatrice. Even after her mum confirmed it was Beatrice, DD2 wasn’t having any of it. Grin

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 11/09/2018 16:29

Oh poor Winston, not only is he no longer a boy but he is also now wearing pinafore dresses and has the name of a cat. She's going to find it very hard to accept he is a boy called Winston isn't she Grin.

onceuponakitchensink · 11/09/2018 16:32

Well I saw him today, and he wasn’t wearing a dress.
He did have a home made style knitted cardie on though. I remember it clearly as it made me remember the thread on here about putting a child in homemade uniform.
He was wearing shorts and a polo shirt though.
Definitely not a pinafore!

My DD's best friend in Reception was apparently called Saucer. I eventually found out that she was really Saoirse.

With a bit of luck, Winston will forever be known as Whiskers. It's a great nickname.

GrumpyMcGrumpFace · 11/09/2018 16:36

Dawn Hobbs HumanRemains Grin Grin Grin

That is utterly brilliant, should be in a Morecambe and Wise sketch.

Honeyroar · 11/09/2018 16:36

This is hysterical!

I bet Dawn Hobb was in a northern town, it does come out as doorknobs!

Parents about to choose names should read this thread.

ConferencePear · 11/09/2018 16:37

This reminds me of my DS insisting that there was a boy in his nursery class who was called "Childs". It turned out to be Giles.

SLoisachtal · 11/09/2018 16:37

@PolkerrisBeach, I'm quite very old - the baby names topic is not one that comes onto my radar!

Love the discovery, onceuponakitchensink Grin

Thefatcatswhiskers · 11/09/2018 16:48

My DS came home from school and said a new boy had started called Harshit. I thought I’d heard it wrong or it was a nickname and he meant hardnut. I don’t know if that’s the correct spelling but that’s how it’s pronounced.

rosablue · 11/09/2018 16:48

ds1 was insistent that his best friend in reception was called Threehorn. Needless to say he wasn't Grin but he would not believe me and continued to call him that for ages Hmm. Luckily his mum had become a good friend and thought it was very funny rather than taking offence which could have happened (particularly once he had been told several times what the name actually was).

Ds2 on the other hand was in a class with a child whose name was very similar to vajazzle which made do a double take a couple of times until I discovered what it actually was!

PurpleCrazyHorse · 11/09/2018 16:52

I wonder what some of the kids will come home thinking DS's name is tomorrow? Poor boy. I've had some of the nursery mums come up and ask how to pronounce his name Grin

Blatherskite · 11/09/2018 16:56

One of my DNephews was convinced that another DNephew was called 'Wheel'.

His name is William but we still call him Wheel from time to time :)

My own kids misheard me when I was telling them the name of a classmates new baby sister. Baby Mabel will forever be Baby Meatball to us Grin

genehuntswife · 11/09/2018 16:56

I have a mindee who is insistent that the little girl who lives on my street is called Miss Lady....she’s called Mercedes

MaryBerrysChutney · 11/09/2018 17:01

Ha ha. My first BF was called Harshit. He was Indian and the name was pronounced differently. It ended in a 'th' like the one in 'cathy'. Oh, he never got anyone to say his name right Grin
