To think the deliberate targeting of disabled people is idealogical and reminiscent of the 3rd reich?

Friends and I were discussing the current government's treatment of the disabled and I heard ANOTHER harrowing story. Her friends has multiple disabilities, cannot walk and relies on painkillers to make life tolerable. After her last assessment this woman was deemed fit to work and was told by a non medical professional (AKA administrator) that she didn't need medication. Her financial support was removed and now she has nothing whilst she stages an appeal.

The trouble is the government has scrapped a scheme which got disabled people into work. My good friend's sister has quite severe learning disabilities but was very happy in her job in a café until the government scrapped the scheme. Another thing we can thank Cameron for. She was devastated and wanted to work as it gave her self esteem.

So we have double standards here. We are being told to get jobs or loose benefits yet jobs are being cut.

AIBU to feel that humanity has learned nothing from history lessons at school and during a financial crisis we are keen to scapegoat others (disabled, jews etc.) Seems like most people don't want to help others as 'they work hard and why should they pay taxes?'

Someone will probably come along to say that Corbyn is an anti semite but the Nazis were anti disabled and wanted to squeeze them out of existence. So are the Tories. Is this an example of political gaslighting , cognitive dissonance or projection I wonder?

My daughter has speech problems among other things. Week before she was assessed they changed all the criteria here - if your speech is at all intelligible (you could barely understand her at all) they tell you to sod off now.

A lifetime of being unable to communicate unless your family can afford to go private at over £70 a session. We're selling belongings to try to get her the help.

babybythesea · 08/09/2018 19:02

And to answer the point, while I think it is stretching it to extremes to compare Nazis to the Conservatives, I can see where the parallels are.
A party in power targeting a particular group and managing to convince the rest (creation of 'us' and 'them' in the meantime) that they are somehow to blame (taking our money when they don't really need it). After all, the Nazis didn't start with the camps, they started with the drop drip drip of the ideology, so that people gave examples like the one unthread about giving lazy people money. I honestly can't see the Conservatives ending up with death camps, but I can see how the comparison from the early days of Nazi-ism works.

LanguidLobster · 08/09/2018 19:02

It's quite frightening reading some stories on here - I've always assumed if I got severely ill I'd be taken care of

Dontsweatthelittlestuff · 08/09/2018 19:02

Altermatic not alternative sorry that is my iPad deciding for itself what I mention to type

10degreestostarboard · 08/09/2018 19:03

Maxthemartian

Yup traditional Tory: small government, low taxes

You’re welcome

Morethanthisprovincallife · 08/09/2018 19:05

I remember awful program about living with disabilities in the UK, I think it was lady who was lady Diana old friend.

She went through all the hardships, had people on there detailing all their troubles. That was under labour and Conservative. I remember her saying with both brown and Cameron both having disabled dc it should be revolutionary time for people with disabilities.. Because people at the top know what it's like.

As for Painful, patronising hideous interviews, I have sat through those under labour too.

Morethanthisprovincallife · 08/09/2018 19:07

You could also argue all those girls in Rotherham were targeted as white trash under labour and all subsequent cases coming out because the regime actively stopped investigation into the rape, child abuse and child sex rings these men run.

maxthemartian · 08/09/2018 19:13

10degreestostarboard I'm welcome? Really?!

I worked for twenty years, I had a well-paid job and paid plenty of tax. I paid in gladly on the understanding that this was a fair society with a safety net. I didn't expect to need it myself.

In my hour of need that safety net has not been there. But feel free to laugh and sneer at me why don't you.

Nizuc · 08/09/2018 19:15

Max, you started it. Don't get all upset when someone posts something you don't like.

maxthemartian · 08/09/2018 19:21

I hope you never need to claim PIP Nizuc. I had no idea how callous people could be. It's been quite a learning curve.

10degreestostarboard · 08/09/2018 19:24

Max

No one is saying people shouldn’t get help when they need it but the premise of this thread is a Nazi comparison

That is so wrong I don’t know where to start

Nizuc · 08/09/2018 19:29

Sadly I do claim PIP!

BlueTyger · 08/09/2018 19:43

only on MN would people make such an offensive comparison.

BlueTyger · 08/09/2018 19:44

I think if you were a target under the Nazis, whether jew, communist or disabled, it would be a different experience from having your benefits reduced (mine have and I am disabled fyi).

idiots just post on MN these days, or was it ever thus?

Heatherjayne1972 · 08/09/2018 20:06

The way disabled people are treated is a disgrace
But it is/ was in the conservative manifesto at the last election
They intend to dismantle the benefit system ( and nhs) completely. If you’re disabled you either work and support yourself or your family supports you ( according to them)
If you can’t support yourself you are considered a drain on society

If you voted Tory I hope you’re ashamed of yourself

Nizuc · 08/09/2018 20:08

If you voted Tory I hope you’re ashamed of yourself

not that old chestnut again.

Firesuit · 08/09/2018 20:15

You lot must be new to the internet. It's a rule of internet political discussion that the first person to make a comparison with Nazis loses.

So OP lost the argument in her opening post, in fact in the subject, before she even got to the post itself.

malificent7 · 08/09/2018 20:27

Never heard that rule.
So it's not just me then.
Question is...what is the electorate going to do about it?

OP posts:
ginghambox · 08/09/2018 20:30

what is the electorate going to do about it?
Vote the Tory's back in what other option is there?

10degreestostarboard · 08/09/2018 20:39

Heather Jayne

Who would you rather we voted for?

Labour? Fine unless you are Jewish or white/ English...

PickAChew · 08/09/2018 20:41

10degrees while telling your little stories, you are omitting Polly who hasn't a clue why she's been given a piece of paper, so chucks it on the floor, Magnus who can't even lift his hand to take the fiver off you and Jane, who is grateful for the fiver so puts it in a drawer because maybe one day she'll be able to leave the house and do something with it.

PeaceRaven · 08/09/2018 20:42

As firesuit said the Op lost the argument on the first post.

And Heatherjane, yes I did and no I am not. Politics is a funny old game and no ‘one’ party will have mandates aligned 100% with your own views.

10degreestostarboard · 08/09/2018 20:52

Pick a chew

Glad you appreciate my little stories

But you miss the point which is that total equality will result in a society which doesn’t try to push any boundaries ever - because there is no incentive to do so if all government does is put you back to where you started

There are winners and losers in life - twas always thus. The key is not to draw the line in too extreme a direction

RebelRogue · 08/09/2018 21:09

Hard to be a winner when you can't even be in the race...

Flashingbeacon · 08/09/2018 21:19

Lots of winners on the back of losers. Take a % of people out the race and it’s easier. Make it harder for everyone else and it’s easier. No can achieve in a vacuum.
