When you get seaweed from the chinese...

It isn't seaweed.

It's CABBAGE!!!

Must have had it over 100 times from the chinese and I never knew.

I can't have been the only one?!

I like it even more with fresh lemon squeezed in!

DarlingNikita · 06/09/2018 11:40

I know this now but didn't until I was in my 30s. In my defence I don't eat a lot of Chinese food.

I'm shocked about prawn toast. I'm going to ask the boss of my local about it next time I'm getting some. We're very friendly but I wonder if that will test the boundaries of our relationship Grin

ToadOfSadness · 06/09/2018 11:45

"Spring green" a variety of cabbage, as is "savoy" and "kale".

I know this, however the word cabbage always makes me think of the 'white' or sweetheart cabbage, whereas to buy kale, Savoy or greens I would be actually buying kale,Savoy or a bag of greens, or even Cavalero Nero if I can find it. Now that would make nice seaweed, without the sugary stuff. I like fried cabbage, any type.

Mamadothehump · 06/09/2018 12:01

"They sell "prawn balls" too at mine - and last time I looked prawns don't have any."

Prawn balls are deep fried prawns in batter in a ball shape...

I think she is taking the pisseth!!!

Hertha · 06/09/2018 20:45

I once took the piss out of DH for asking what was in prawn toast, and now you're telling me it is PORK!
So far as I can tell it’s made with prawn...

RedBallpointPens · 06/09/2018 22:41

Sorry toad, I'm a bit of a cabbage geek and also a teacher so feel the need to educate people on varieties of cabbage at every opportunity! I once had an argument with a uni roommate that cabbage don't grow in winter - based on her Tesco experience! She never accepted my offer to work on the farm over the christmas holidays.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 06/09/2018 22:53

In other shock Chinese crispy seaweed news, the delicious orangey coloured stuff that comes on the top of it is made of scallops. My vegetarian friend told me this and I didn't believe her! But I asked the restaurant and it is indeed true

It is true,
I used to buy it , then noticed the 'New and Improved' recipe wasn't vegetarian, there was Fish Dust on it

Obviously the peasants revolted and the Status Quo was restored.

I was very excited to buy some dried seaweed from Costco. I would have to think a long time before I can think of anything more disgusting. I had to shave my own taste buds off to recover Shock.

AdaColeman · 06/09/2018 22:57

Prawn toast is chopped prawns with egg to bind it, spread on bread, maybe some spring onion, but no pork!

PoisonousSmurf · 07/09/2018 10:29

Get some laverbread if you're desperate for seaweed.

Alexaaaa · 07/09/2018 10:47

I've made Prawn toasts, its definitely prawns.
Like in a paste on top of the bread, then sprinkled with sesame seeds and fried.

madja · 07/09/2018 11:02

peaches
The Japanese also use tamari soy sauce, which is different to the Chinese. It's much milder and not brewed with wheat. It's usually on the free from isle in any supermarket.

MadisonAvenue · 07/09/2018 12:20

Mamadothehump I was coming to point that out too Grin

I never knew this!
I've never ordered seaweed from a Chinese though but I do buy bags of it, like bags of crisps, for my son from a Chinese supermarket. I'll definitely be looking at the list of ingredients next time to see if it's cabbage!
That's assuming that the ingredients will be in English.

Didn't know about prawn toast either.

delphguelph · 07/09/2018 12:20

Wwhhaaatttt

starray · 07/09/2018 12:54

I thought it was spring greens, not cabbage

Lizzy1980 · 07/09/2018 19:35

Yep. It's good old fashioned, overpriced cabbage.
I'm vegan so I eat seaweed regularly as it's very nutritious and a good source of B12. It tastes very fishy and has a much stronger flavour than the cabbage you get in Chinese restaurants. I did think it was seaweed too years ago but since I've started eating the real thing the difference is pretty clear.

crosstalk · 07/09/2018 21:05

Knew it 20 years ago .. but couldn't spread it on Mumsnet

Love proper seaweed. Japanese dried in all its forms, even the stuff you use to make a proper dashi stock . Laver bread, yum. Trouble is if everyone gets in on the act, our seas and coastlines will be stripped and all the useful creatures that eat/hide in it and also feed sea birds will be gone

Stick to cabbage, chaps.

Lizzy1980 · 07/09/2018 22:11

Our coastline is roughly the same size as Japan's. They eat more seaweed than any other nation and still have it in abundance. Much of the seaweed sold for consumption (animal and human) and biofuel is now grown vertically on ropes in the sea almost like an artificial vertical reef. It's farmed alongside shellfish which cleanse and filter the water whilst using the kelp for shelter.
If this practice continues to expand a network of these ocean farms covering just 1% of the ocean could produce enough shellfish, sea-veg and sustainably reared fish to feed the world.
I can't recommend seaweed highly enough as a health food and as it absorbs so much nitrogen, carbon dioxide and phosphorous it does a wonderful job of cleansing our oceans.
On that note I've just ordered a Chinese and yes, I'm having crispy cabbage Smile
