When you get seaweed from the chinese...

It isn't seaweed.

It's CABBAGE!!!

Must have had it over 100 times from the chinese and I never knew.

I can't have been the only one?!

I thought it was seaweed too 🙄 why do they say it is if it isn't? 🙈

Maryann1975 · 05/09/2018 20:00

I found this out a year or so ago. I was really upset because one of my grandparents hated cabbage and so do I. It was a bit of a joke between us, but I promised them that I would never eat the cabbage. They have since died. I then found out I had been enjoying Chinese ‘seaweed’ and every time I have it, I feel bad that I haven’t kept my promise. But it is so delicious I can’t not eat it! The internal struggle to resist is awful!

Because they don't care whose heart they break, Princess

They

Just

Don't

Care!

Catsandbootsandbootsandcats · 05/09/2018 20:03

I didn't know that.

I've only had it once, and enjoyed it. But I love cabbage so that would be why.

It's a scandal I tell you!

sadeyedladyofthelowlandsea · 05/09/2018 20:03

I gleefully remember the time someone on twitter did one of those massively irritating 'Disgusted @tesco call it 'seaweed' when, if you look at the ingredients, it's actually just cabbage' tweets... and then refused to accept the assurance from about 400 people (including Tesco customer services) that yes... that's what we all know as crispy seaweed. 'NOT IN ANY CHINESE TAKEAWAYS I'VE EVER HAD @tesco I'LL BE SHOPPING @ASDA FROM NOW ON YOU LIARS' I think even Asda replied saying 'nope, still cabbage here too!'

Is it just sugar and salt they sprinkle though? It seems somehow more

LaContessaDiPlump · 05/09/2018 20:04

I never knew that! I once innocently commented that you never saw a fresh prune though.

Apparently they are called 'plums'.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 05/09/2018 20:05

"Plums" Grin

bridgetreilly · 05/09/2018 20:05

I knew that. To be fair, in China, I think they do use seaweed, but here it's cabbage.

InsomniacAnonymous · 05/09/2018 20:06

I feel the urge to induce further shooketh-osity by revealing that when you have wasabi outside Japan it's usually white horseradish + green colouring or spinach and sometimes mustard too.

SecretWitch · 05/09/2018 20:07

Wasabi is horesradish??? Now I’m shooketh!!

redfairy · 05/09/2018 20:07

I'm 51. How have I gone through life eating fooking fried cabbage as a Saturday night treat?

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 05/09/2018 20:08

Seaweed, there's a bake off challenge waiting to happen.

MorningsEleven · 05/09/2018 20:10

Apparently they are called 'plums'

You've made my day!

Canyerjustfixthis · 05/09/2018 20:10

Sprinkled with crushed peanut in these parts - yummy Smile

SchadenfreudePersonified · 05/09/2018 20:12

Wasabi is horesradish??? Now I’m shooketh!!

Me too!

I've never been so shookethed . . . I may need lie down . . .

I mean . . . . horseradish!

buttermilkwaffles · 05/09/2018 20:12

Also, there is no crab in crab sticks - surprised by how many people don't know that though.

iklboo · 05/09/2018 20:14

Proper wasabi is wasabi. But it's very expensive.

Most wasabi we get over here is horseradish dyed green.

The difference is really obvious if you ever get the proper thing.

YearOfYouRemember · 05/09/2018 20:15

I thought seaweed was seaweed. I stopped buying it from Sainsbury's as they pack it in a non recyclable black tray.

Yerroblemom1923 · 05/09/2018 20:20

What is "shooketh"????

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 05/09/2018 20:21

I'm not even going to ask what Birds Nest Soup is......

YearOfYouRemember · 05/09/2018 20:21

"They sell "prawn balls" too at mine - and last time I looked prawns don't have any."

Hmm.

Prawn balls are deep fried prawns in batter in a ball shape...

Moominfan · 05/09/2018 20:23

I didn't know my mind has been blown

Badtasteflump · 05/09/2018 20:24

I stopped buying it when I realised - a fiver for a portion if seaweed seems fair enough, but for a blob of cabbage it's a piss take. And it's usually doused in msg which gives me squiffy guts.

I make my own now - when I can be bothered. Spread some chopped kale on a baking sheet, squidge around in some oil, salt and garlic powder then bake until crispy. Yummy and costs about £1 for a mountain of the stuff.
