Drive at the speed limit

OldSpeclkledHen · 01/09/2018 18:37

I am sick to bloody death of drivers who refuse to drive upto the speed limit.

Ffs if it's 60mph speed limit - drive at fucking 60 -NOT 30 🤬🤬

Three times I have been out driving since last night, EVERY fucking time on 3 different journeys I have been stuck behind some freaking twat who cannot drive upto the speed limit, or overtake a fucking cyclist (but that's another rant)

I am by no means a girl racer, but FFS get out of my fucking way.

Aaaaaand breathe.

Where does it say in highway code to check mirrors every 10 seconds?

No idea about frequency, but when I learned to drive I was expected to know the colour of the car behind me at all times.

I also check mirrors when stopped at lights and crossings.

yoghurtbinger · 03/09/2018 15:25

Agree with DG - you should be aware of what's around you and in your mirrors at all times.

OldSpeclkledHen · 03/09/2018 18:31

Well after my little rant on Saturday, all became clear when I started my period today 🙄🙄

PMT witches 🙄

You would 100% fail your test for driving onto a pavement. Yet people do this every day - the pavements are clogged up with cars. You would fail for speeding as well.

Why all the anger for someone going a bit slow? Why are there never any threads about people who go 10 mph over the limit?

Sisgal · 03/09/2018 18:50

Because people think it's ok to drive at 30 miles under the speed limit. It's DANGEROUS. Do all you slow people drive at 35 on a motorway???

oldsockeater · 03/09/2018 18:59

People in cars are just so impatient.

Recent experiences: Paused at a junction in my car to allow some pedestrians to finish crossing (already in the road so would have run them over if I'd kept going). Person behind starts hooting frantically. That's happened twice in the last month.

Stopped on my bike to let a mother duck and some ducklings across (again they were halfway across when I came round the corner so I would have run them over). Cue driver behind hooting and shouting abuse. (Road with a 20 mph)

Stopped on my bike to let a wheelchair user cross at a zebra crossing. Driver behind overtook me, went through the zebra and almost hit the wheelchair user who was in the road by then (don't think he even saw the person crossing, just saw a stopped bike and though MUST OVERTAKE)

Stopped on my bike at a red light. It had been red for about 10 s when a car overtook and went straight through (don't think he even saw the traffic light, just saw a stopped bike and though MUST OVERTAKE)

Crossed at a zebra crossing on foot - got abuse from a driver who came hurtling round the corner far too fast and struggled to stop in time.

In my car, I indicate right to pull into my drive. The car has a poor turning circle and I need to pull out to the left a bit to make the turn. Several times people have tried to overtake on the right even though I am indicating right, then hooted at me when I start to turn. This is also a 20 mph zone. The first couple of times I thought my indicators weren't working. They were.

As a cyclist, close passes due to impatience happen on a daily basis.

As a driver, slow driving can sometimes be a little annoying - but it doesn't come close to all the dangerous things that impatient drivers do. They always seem to think they know best, not imagining that there is a perfectly good reason why someone is slowing down/stopping

Congrats it must be harding living life as a Saint 👏

WhyIsntGeorgeCalledPeterOrPaul · 03/09/2018 19:27

Why?

VeniVidiWeeWee · 03/09/2018 19:33

why

Try joining a motorway at 40 and see how safe you feel.

TittyGolightly · 03/09/2018 19:39

An utter twat caused a queue of about 5 cars join the motorway at 35mph yesterday. I uploaded the dash cam footage to the police because they should be banned for life.

QuestionableMouse · 03/09/2018 19:42

@sirmione16 because even in my large and very comfortable car, speed bumps hurt me. Plus there's less risk of damaging the car. Sorry.

yamadori · 03/09/2018 19:43

It isn't ok to drive at 30 miles an hour below the speed limit.
Nor is it ok to get enraged and aggressively tailgate someone who is doing it.

QuestionableMouse · 03/09/2018 19:44

@WhyIsntGeorgeCalledPeterOrPaul closing speed, especially on the motorway.

TittyGolightly · 03/09/2018 19:46

I want one of these.

Drive at the speed limit
WhyIsntGeorgeCalledPeterOrPaul · 03/09/2018 21:40

Try joining a motorway at 40 and see how safe you feel.

Well, joining a motorway is quite a different situation to what the OP originally described.

If I sped up to join the motorway and then slowed down to 40 and stayed in the leftmost lane, would it be dangerous, or just a nuisance?

WhyIsntGeorgeCalledPeterOrPaul · 03/09/2018 21:46

closing speed, especially on the motorway

Yeah, I guess that could be a problem. I don't really know just how quickly you would approach a car doing 40mph if you were doing 70. Don't some big lorries go at around 50?

And it's probably less of an issue on single-lane country roads I think (which is what this discussion is actually about). I mean, I come across tractors and other large vehicles going much slower than 30mph on those roads pretty regularly, and people seem to cope without running into the back of them.

TittyGolightly · 03/09/2018 21:49

Yeah, I guess that could be a problem. I don't really know just how quickly you would approach a car doing 40mph if you were doing 70.

Christ. That’s pretty basic maths.

Don't some big lorries go at around 50?

They’re limited to 59mph usually (speed limit for them is 60mph).

So if you’re doing 40, you’re going to push them all into the middle lane to get around you, leaving everyone doing 70 into the outside lane.

It’s dangerous and selfish and you should rightly be booked if you do it.

Lizzie48 · 03/09/2018 21:55

That's so true, @TittyGolightly driving at 40mph on the motorway is just not on. Just don't go on the motorway if you're going to drive that slowly.

PurpleAndTurquoise · 03/09/2018 22:01

Does the speed limit on A and B roads apply to motor bikes? It doesn't round my way. My local A roads are 60mph (unless lower restrictions apply) but if I do 60mph the motorbikes roar up behind me and speed past (solid white line or not - they don't care). They are very intimidating and I would say round my way 99/100 motorcycle riders speed above the limit. I guess this is why they are known as donor cycles by medics.
Thank you to the lovely (but very small minority) of motor cyclists who don't speed or intimidate).

lexer · 03/09/2018 22:31

@Jeanclaudejackety...are you okay?

VinoISVeritas · 03/09/2018 22:51

Christ, there are people on here who shouldn’t be anywhere near behind the wheel of a car!
If you go waaay under the speed limit, you are causing an obstruction.
Which causes people to get frustrated and do things they normally wouldn’t do.
That is what is enforced.
If you go waaaay over the speed limit, the theory is that you are a danger to others and haven’t got as much time to react as you would if obeying the limit.
That’s also what’s enforced.
What should, IMO, happen is that the driving test should get the hell of a lot harder, and you should have to be able to prove your ability to manoeuvre at speed/in poor road conditions/when confronted with an aggressive/overly slow driver/unexpected obstruction; all of which should be tested in a controlled environment.
And yes, I’m well aware that this will never happen.

WhyIsntGeorgeCalledPeterOrPaul · 03/09/2018 22:55

Christ. That’s pretty basic maths.

Christ you have difficulty understanding the context of a conversation.

WhyIsntGeorgeCalledPeterOrPaul · 03/09/2018 22:56

If you go waaay under the speed limit, you are causing an obstruction.
Which causes people to get frustrated and do things they normally wouldn’t do.

So it would be the other people driving dangerously then, not the slow driver.

WhyIsntGeorgeCalledPeterOrPaul · 03/09/2018 22:58

So if you’re doing 40, you’re going to push them all into the middle lane to get around you, leaving everyone doing 70 into the outside lane

Well, my question was is it dangerous, or just a nuisance? And what you've described sounds a lot like the latter and not much like the former.

VinoISVeritas · 03/09/2018 22:59

You’re absolutely right.
In the same way that having a heart makes it your fault if you have a heart attack.
The frustration/rage/aggression is a human response.
Police do know this and want to keep the traffic flowing.
I don’t particularly care whether that’s Right or Wrong.
That’s real life.
