Drive at the speed limit

OldSpeclkledHen · 01/09/2018 18:37

I am sick to bloody death of drivers who refuse to drive upto the speed limit.

Ffs if it's 60mph speed limit - drive at fucking 60 -NOT 30 🤬🤬

Three times I have been out driving since last night, EVERY fucking time on 3 different journeys I have been stuck behind some freaking twat who cannot drive upto the speed limit, or overtake a fucking cyclist (but that's another rant)

I am by no means a girl racer, but FFS get out of my fucking way.

Aaaaaand breathe.

OP posts:

There is a road local to my parents that goes 30 / 60 / 30 - the number of people that do 40 straight through winds me right up!

5krunning · 01/09/2018 19:01

I agree with you OP with the only exception being country roads.
On country roads where it's 60, I often do around 40 because I'd rather drive on twisty lanes at a decent speed that I'm comfortable at rather than risk going any faster and feeling out of my depth.
Some people do take the piss though going way below the limit on a dry, uncomplicated road!!
I remember watching an episode of Police Interceptors where a man was doing 30 on a dual carriageway and got pulled over! He was warned to speed up or potentially cause a collision.

Fattymcfaterson · 01/09/2018 19:01

I always get the people that go 40 everywhere, 40 in the 60 then still 40 on the 30.
They are literally paying no attention!

Guavaf1sh · 01/09/2018 19:03

YANBU. The most annoying posts I see here are people who say ‘I drove for hours slow and safely through the countryside and everyone behind me was very annoyed and kept on beeping how rude’ and when you suggest pulling over to let the others pass they say no why should they besides in an hour of driving there was never an opportunity. Dangerous people like that need extra driving lessons.

Whatififall · 01/09/2018 19:05

Same. I was on the M1 today, excellent visibility, early morning (around 8am) so pretty quiet and I had to slow down for the old man doing 40mph! There was absolutely no need for that speed.

wowfudge · 01/09/2018 19:05

I find that a lot of those drivers who drive considerably under the speed limit on roads with a 50 or 60mph limit fail to reduce their speed when the limit drops to 30. They drive at a constant 40mph. Infuriating.

My commute to work is largely on rural roads with a 50 limit and so many people drive dangerously slowly or right up your arse. They also drive with their foot permanently on the brake instead of changing down to an appropriate gear for the road.

It can be challenging and nerve wracking. Just yesterday on my way home from work some idiot two cars behind me was bullying the driver behind me by driving far too close and kept moving out to the centre of the road as though he was going to overtake - there was neither room nor the opportunity.

TopBitchoftheWitches · 01/09/2018 19:08

We have single track country lanes where I live, they are national speed limit so 60mph, if you did that down those lanes you'd soon be dead.

redcarbluecar · 01/09/2018 19:10

30mph in a 60 limit is quite weird but there’s no obligation to drive up to 60 - people drive more slowly for all sorts of reasons. We’re responsible for our own speed and safety not other people’s. Slow driving can be annoying but tough- you chose to drive, you chose to share the road with others, and they won’t always do exactly what you want. If that’s a problem, other modes of travel are available. Impatient driving is far more dangerous than slow.

Aprilshowersinaugust · 01/09/2018 19:10

I joke to dh that it's drivers saving on brake pads!

Lizzie48 · 01/09/2018 19:10

I agree that it's annoying, especially when there's no possibility of overtaking. And I agree that this kind of driver can very easily cause accidents when drivers behind get impatient to get past them. But I don't think it's worth getting so angry about it in the overall scheme of things. The main thing is to get back safely. (My FIL died in a car accident.)

JynxaSmoochum · 01/09/2018 19:12

There's a NSL road near me, modern road, good width, well cambered on the bends. The vast majority drive on it at 50-60 mph.
Then there's the ones barely scraping 35 mph... who inevitably put their feet down on the accelerator for the final stretch of 40 mph Confused

SirGawain · 01/09/2018 19:13

I am sick to bloody death of drivers who refuse to drive upto the speed limit.
It's a limit not a target. Many country roads near me have the national speed limit, (60mph), but it would be suicidal to drive a anywhere near that speed. The nearest main road to me is 30mph but some stretches are not safe above 20mph.

redcarbluecar · 01/09/2018 19:15

If there’s an accident caused by an impatient driver trying to get past a slow driver, the impatient driver has caused the accident. They could regulate their speed until it’s safe to pass.

SirGawain · 01/09/2018 19:16

Which car do you drive OP, BMW, Mercedes or Audi?

maxthemartian · 01/09/2018 19:16

There's roads round me where you'd kill yourself, or a horse and rider, or a cyclist, if you tried to do sixty. NSL roads in theory.

I actually think that they should have lower limits in many cases. There's a reason they're a lot more dangerous than both motorways and urban roads.

ManicStreetTeacher · 01/09/2018 19:18

Speed LIMIT, not speed target.
Safer for the shit drivers to drive to their capabilities than to be forced to speed up by someone driving up their arse.

Aridane · 01/09/2018 19:18

I think OP needs an anger management course!

ragged · 01/09/2018 19:19

I dunno. I drove at 30 in a 60 the other day. I pulled out of a national trust driveway onto main road. I knew the 30 zone was close & I couldn't remember if I was in it already. I looked for repeaters & then saw the sign for the start of the 30 zone. So I did 30 unnecessarily for 1/4 mile or so.

I get irked by always40 drivers, too, but honestly, it's not good for your blood pressure to get so het up about something you can't control.

Hufflefloof · 01/09/2018 19:19

We have a 50mph road near us where everyone seems to slow down to 30mph for the speed cameras! There’s a huge 50 sign right there Angry

VforVienetta · 01/09/2018 19:21

I can see both sides.

Some truly twattish people drive ridiculously slowly on open roads (say 35mph) then don’t slow down through villages, so they’re then speeding significantly over the limit! Utter twats.

BUT.
I won’t overtake a cyclist unless there is room for me to give them the proper amount of room (ie i fully cross the white line), and my shitty engine has poor acceleration so i need a lot of room/visibility to do that.

A bizarre amount of people assume that just because their shiny new car can go 0-60 in 5 seconds and brake on a penny, that mine can too. Ha. The poor bastards are stuck for ages behind me on a hill, and there’s precious little i can do about it.
I won’t put someone else’s convenience above my braking distance or a cyclists’s safety.

—but assuming none of this applies of course you’re right!—

user1471450935 · 01/09/2018 19:23

OP, I suggest you should go on speed awareness course and an anger management course.
Many slower driver's fall into 2 camps.
The old, like my amazing MIL, 76. Safe driver, but now knows her reaction times are slower, so goes slower. She is therefore safer for her and other road users.
The second group are new driver's, why because they either have black boxes, which limit their speed because they lose points or can lose their insurance for being to fast. If they are driving in new areas unsure of the speed limit they tend to stick to 30 to 35, as they know they are safe. Or if not on black box, 2 speeding fines ie 6 points and they are back to resitting both tests again.
According to my speed awareness course, yes catch speeding, the two most dangerous drivers are speeders and tailgaters, who lost their temper. Think the OP fails into the second catergory.
After losing my Brother at 20 to speeding, and seeing the aftermath of cars colliding with a tractor, when they couldn't stop, I would advise you chill out.
Ten minutes on your journey, or a life time in a wooden box?

maxthemartian · 01/09/2018 19:23

Also I really wish people would wait a bit before overtaking cyclists. Bored shitless of having to practically go into the hedge because someone couldn't wait a few seconds and decided to use my side of the road.
Plus not giving the cyclist remotely enough room.

FruitCider · 01/09/2018 19:25

Vfor that sounds reasonable, if I'm stuck behind a car with a 1l engine going up a hill with a cyclist in front I wouldn't expect them to attempt overtaking!

Eliza9917 · 01/09/2018 19:26

YANBU.

People around here don't seem to be able to get above 20mph ffs. I regularly tell dp we have to move because I can't take it anymore. They all drive at 10 under the limit if not 20mph.

gggrrrargh · 01/09/2018 19:27

I get you are frustrated at slower drivers, but please never be frustrated about someone not overtaking a cyclist as quickly as you would like. The car driver needs to be certain there is enough visibility of the road ahead and enough space in their own view that keep the cyclist safe, they are not choosing their overtaking moment for the purpose of saving the driver behind them 90 seconds.
