Drive at the speed limit

OldSpeclkledHen · 01/09/2018 18:37

I am sick to bloody death of drivers who refuse to drive upto the speed limit.

Ffs if it's 60mph speed limit - drive at fucking 60 -NOT 30 🤬🤬

Three times I have been out driving since last night, EVERY fucking time on 3 different journeys I have been stuck behind some freaking twat who cannot drive upto the speed limit, or overtake a fucking cyclist (but that's another rant)

I am by no means a girl racer, but FFS get out of my fucking way.

Aaaaaand breathe.

@atscoob ooh maybe we could have a race, although by sounds of it, you drive that slow it'll take you about a week to get here haha....anyway its clear you don't want to accept being in the wrong. So bla bla bla....just hope if you got a big black car behind you its not me driving...and if it is, try going a bit bloody faster!!

ItsScoob · 03/09/2018 05:46

"just hope if you got a big black car behind you its not me driving"

Why? What would happen if you were behind me?

Christ, I hope these "4 children" are living with their father(s) or imaginary.

Sisgal · 03/09/2018 06:09

Wowsers Shock why you so bitter?? (It's ok you don't really need to answer cos I don't actually give a fuck)

AlexaAmbidextra · 03/09/2018 06:39

Redcarbluecar
Alas it’s not yet a crime to ‘not be in a rush or to pootle along country roads. I sometimes quite like to admire the scenery.

No, you didn’t actually say you ‘pootled’. But you implied you did by saying you quite like to admire the scenery. I responded that by admiring the scenery you are not concentrating on driving. I have not changed my opinion.

ItsScoob · 03/09/2018 06:45

Not bitter. Just angry because intelligent and thoughtful adults like me have to share a road with ignorant and dangerous losers like you.

I feel vulnerable on my bicycle and this can translate to anger.

I feel less vulnerable on my motorbike as I can catch up with dangerous drivers and help them 'remember' how to drive properly.

Why haven't you answered my question? Why should I hope it's not you in a black car behind me? You're an anonymous internet user. If you can't be billy-bi-balls here, where will you? Explain your threat.

Sparklingwinemakesmehappy · 03/09/2018 06:46

Years ago I found myself unexpectedly on benefits.

The cost of driving over 30mph made the fuel in my tank drop significantly. For that period in my life I drove at around 30mph, occasionally up to 45mph on motorway or duel carriageway.

I simply couldn't afford not to. It makes a huge difference. I could get nearly a third more miles out of a tank of fuel.

Could this be the reason?

VickieCherry · 03/09/2018 06:56

@Sisgal It is absolutely not always safe to drive at 60mph on 60 roads. Have you never been in the countryside? Jesus. Five minutes from my house is a road that's 60mph. I've never driven it above 45.

The 60 limit is there because it's a variable speed road. If you drive fast on tight bends and narrow lanes you are going to kill yourself (and likely someone else).

@Vicki cherry never said it was safe to drive 60 on a 60 all of the time. I clearly state that due to weather conditions etc then obviously you need to adjust driving style. But like I said, the limit IS 60 so stop having a go at people who feel comfortable and have the skills to drive at 60 on a 60. It's scary so many of you fail to see the danger at driving 30 in a 60. It's not a hard concept to get your head around Hmm

VickieCherry · 03/09/2018 07:20

If 30 is appropriate for the conditions I'll drive at 30. It's not about having the 'skills', it's about recognising the potential danger.

I'm sure most of us have been overtaken by some idiot who thinks they have the 'skills' to drive too fast for difficult conditions.

Did you know that several studies have shown that driving when angry is more likely to cause an accident than drink-driving

*I feel less vulnerable on my motorbike as I can catch up with dangerous drivers and help them 'remember' how to drive properly.**

Which hypocritical (Yet blissfully lacking in self awareness to recognise such) posted the above gems after berating someone else about getting angry.

What a load of wanky shit

ItsScoob · 03/09/2018 07:35

you clearly have reading issues. However, you don't drive a bicycle.

Does this help at all, love?

bourbonbiccy · 03/09/2018 09:00

MereDintofPandiculation by this logic, we should totally disregard all speed limits and just drive to the limit we personally deem safe by the conditions on that day ??

Lizzie48 · 03/09/2018 09:18

Obviously not totally, bourbonbiccy on a main road in a built up area, it could on a quiet day be safe to drive above 30, but you could easily end up with 3 points on your license and £100 poorer (not to mention the increase in your insurance premiums).

But of course you should drive at a safe speed, not just slavishly stick to the speed limit when it's clearly unsafe to do so. I was taught when a learner that what matters is keeping up with the flow of traffic.

My FIL was killed in a car accident. He pulled out into the road to turn around in the car park opposite. But he failed to notice that there was a car coming and this car crashed into him. The other driver wasn't speeding, so my FIL was technically at fault (something which my MIL has always refused to accept). But arguably, the other driver should have been more careful, as he was going round a bend where there were cars parked, and you should always be on the lookout for something like that happening.

So yes, of course the priority is to drive at a safe speed, which in many cases is below the speed limit.

VeniVidiWeeWee · 03/09/2018 10:09

itscoob

You`re right. You don't drive a bicycle. But nor do you drive a CBR 600 as you stated in your earlier post.

On a lighter note...

Drive at the speed limit

If it was on the same road are you sure there hasn’t been a speed limit change recently that you are not aware of?

That’s happened a few times round my bit, 40 roads reduced to 30 and then back to 40. One road has gone from 50 to 30 but isn’t well signposted as a change so loads of people still belt along at 50, visibility annoyed at the people doing 30. Both of these roads still show in sat navs as the old speed limit.

There is also a national speed limit road near me that has a bad bend, followed by another bad bend straight after. You would be pretty stupid to take that st 60 (and the people that do frequently end up crashing through the fence and into the field at the side).

Pissedoffdotcom · 03/09/2018 12:12

Jesus i hope some of you don't live near me. There is no amount of skill or experience that will get you round some of our bends at 60, i don't give a shit what you drive or how cocky you are. And i've seen plenty of accidents on all of them to know.

Pissedoffdotcom · 03/09/2018 12:19

And we had a local campaign to change the designated speed limit because clearly some idiots think because a road is NSL they should just open up & go. A campaign which our local police officers backed before they were obliterated out of our village thanks to cutbacks because even they openly stated the road bends are too severe to attempt at 60. Just because a road says NSL doesn't mean it has actually been assessed safe to do that speed

DGRossetti · 03/09/2018 12:24

Birmingham Council are mid way through an exercise to reduce speed limits on non-main roads to 20 mph. Almost every road near me is 20, apart from the A456 (30 leading to 40) and the A38 (30).

Even if they wanted to, the speed merchants simply can't get past a line of little ducks cars all doing 20. What a shame.

LakieLady · 03/09/2018 13:19

He didn't read the traffic well. I was fine. He overtook me - fine but what about the oncoming bus? The biker took chances.

Did he hit the bus? If not, I'd say he was a skilled rider on a fast bike who knew exactly what his, and his bike's, capabilities were.

People who aren't used to motorbikes don't realise how well they handle when ridden by someone who's a good rider. They are really nimble when ridden well (DP can manoeuvre a 337kg bike through a slalom even at walking pace).

Drivers are notoriously bad at judging the speed of motorbikes, which is believed to be because a motorcycle image is so much narrower than a car's the eye/brain doesn't receive enough data to accurately evaluate speed. They are also notoriously bad at checking their blind spots. I have been riding pillion many times when it has been obvious, even from the back seat, that a driver has no idea we're behind them, even with loud racing pipes fitted, DRLs and high-vis clothing.

Of course there are stupid, incompetent and reckless motorcyclists on the road. Most of them don't tend to be motorcyclists for very long. But drivers often demonstrate atrocious bike-awareness.

I can honestly say that in 43 years of driving, I have never had a bike "appear from nowhere". I have never had an accident or even a near miss involving a bike. But I am very bike-aware, having ridden on the back of them pretty regularly for most of my life.

LakieLady · 03/09/2018 13:25

Where does it say in highway code to check mirrors every 10 seconds?

The (ex-police) driving instructor who taught me told me that I should look in my mirrors every 7 seconds. I passed my test in 1975 though, so that may have changed.
