We have booked and paid to go to London for a concert tomorrow night.
Leaving at 6.30 pm tonight
She rang a hour ago saying she was ill with sickness bug and can't go.
It's too late to find anyone else to go.
So I'm loosing out on £90 train
£150 hotel and £79 concert ticket :-(
Do I go alone?
I know I won't enjoy it alone tho
Tomorrow was meant to be shopping then concert ..coming home on Saturday
Gutted

Have you asked anyone? I would put a shout out on FB and see if any other friends wanted to come. Maybe there's a nice Mumsnetter that would go.

herworldoutsideit · 30/08/2018 16:03

Well if you think you need more get up and go in you, now is your perfect opportunity to grow it in yourself! Seize the day!

Your friend has a sickness bug, we all know how awful they are and she really can't go. Unless you want to be vomited on by her on the train (this happened to a friend on mine who was travelling with a friend with a sickness bug. Someone else was trapped in a van with someone who shat themselves whilst travelling with a sickness bug.
You really, really don't want her to travel with you) and then have to go out by yourself anyway as she can't leave the hotel room.

it's worse for your friend, she has missed out on the trip and is trapped near the bog for the weekend. You can go and enjoy yourself and develop your independence and confidence. You can so do this.
Go OP!

noraclavicle · 30/08/2018 16:04

Do an impromptu 2 person MN meetup! Put a call out & I’m sure a lovely Mumsnetter will join you for the theatre Smile

Clairetree1 · 30/08/2018 16:04

Are you mad at your flaky friend? I'd be furious. If I were in her shoes I'd rather dose myself up on cold and flu capsules and get on with it than let down a friend so badly!

don't be ridiculous. What possible use would cold and flu capsules be with norovirus or similar? not to mention it would be criminally selfish to go into a crowded theatre with something so infectious.

SandAndSea · 30/08/2018 16:04

OP, over twenty years ago I took myself off on a weekend away. It wasn't all easy but I STILL look back on it now and am so pleased I did it.

You could plan your route out properly - it'll help you to feel more confident. You could even book a cab in advance to meet you outside the theatre (make them say your name before you get in).

Just some thoughts. Do whatever feels best to you.

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 30/08/2018 16:07

I’d just go alone, not really her fault she’s ill

AlexanderHamilton · 30/08/2018 16:07

Bayswater too will be fine getting back to the hotel.

Get the tube to Queensway direct from Victoria rather than faff about trying to change onto Bayswater. Most of your walk will be alongside Hyde Park on the main road.

letsdolunch321 · 30/08/2018 16:07

Go on your own I had a little look st the hotel, looks very swanky.

Take a bottle of water when you travel to sip if you feel overcome. Transport staff are very accomodating in helping if you need reassurance.

What an acheivement it will be and two fingers up to the feeling of ‘the universe crapping on you’

myrtleWilson · 30/08/2018 16:09

Go! You'll be so proud of yourself... I think the tube journey should be straightforward - Victoria (on D&C line) straight round to Bayswater so no need to change....
How long will it take you on the train tonight - do you need ideas for something to do tonight in London... Jubilee Gardens near the South Bank was very busy and relaxed a couple of weekends a go!

PoisonousSmurf · 30/08/2018 16:10

Go alone! Why are people so scared to do things by themselves? It's sad.

RubiksQueen · 30/08/2018 16:10

Definitely go!! Nobody will care that you're on your own I promise.

Get a good book, and just plan to go and do whatever you like, have a lovely wander, have dinner and read book (I do this all the time when I am on tour) and see the show. Getting back will be fine, there's lots of tubes and at that time of night it's just everyone getting out of shows.

You can do this :)

lalafafa · 30/08/2018 16:12

just checked, an UBER would be between £7-10 from the theater to your hotel.
There's loads of tickets left for tonight, you could tout them outside, £40-£50 if they're good seats.
Go, no one will realise you're on your own.

AlexanderHamilton · 30/08/2018 16:12

The walk from Bayswater is a little shorter but slightly more convoluted than from Queensway for someone who doesn't know the area from what I can see.

Kescilly · 30/08/2018 16:12

Seconding the MN 2 person meetup. This sounds like a great outing!

RibbonAurora · 30/08/2018 16:13

Hell yeah, you should go alone! What everyone else said, London is really easy to navigate and no one notices anyone on their own in a theatre - their eyes will be glued to the stage! Go on OP, live a little, you won't regret it.

MinaPaws · 30/08/2018 16:13

Go to the concert! This happened to me last autumn and I couldn't find a single person to take the ticket. Ended up going alone and it was one of the best gigs I've ever been to. So glad I didn't miss it. You can have a great time in London with no one but yourself to please and answer to - wake up when you please, go where you like, stop for coffee when you want. It's safe.

glueandstick · 30/08/2018 16:13

If you need someone to use the tickets I’ll come and meet you😃 I love a good trunk around London. Will even deliver you safely to your hotel.

Pibplob · 30/08/2018 16:13

Definitely ask your friends. Put it out on Facebook too. Even if they can’t come to London in 4 hours they could meet you there later? Or tomorrow for the concert? You may not have to do it all on your own.

LittleMissYorkshireLass · 30/08/2018 16:14

I think you should go to London, I suffer terribly with anxiety and went away for a few days last year by myself after my ex left and when he had the kids for a few days. I had an amazing time even though I was so nervous!

You don't even need to decidenow if you are going to the show, just go to London and see how you feel.

Good luck Flowers

Sleepyslops · 30/08/2018 16:15

Put it on Facebook. Someone may be able to go. I would if I got the chance. Shows in London are AMAZING.

SuperSharpShooter82 · 30/08/2018 16:15

Definitely go! Have an adventure! You'll regret it more if you don't go, wondering 'what if'!

twilightcafe · 30/08/2018 16:15

Leinster Gardens is close to Bayswater and Queensway tube stations. Queensway is also the 'high street' and is busy all the time. Loads of places to eat, too.
There is lovely cafe/restaurant called Halepi on Leinster Terrace which serves lovely breakfasts.

NailsNeedDoing · 30/08/2018 16:15

London is a lot safer than it can look to outsiders, it will be full of people where you're going and you won't find yourself wanting around in the dark alone where you're headed to.

If you can possibly find the courage, then do it! Think how empowered you'll feel. Wicked is a great show, there's no way you won't enjoy it, and genuinely, no one would bat an eyelid at you being there on your own because so many people do it. Assuming you have a smartphone, you can use google maps to get you anywhere you need to walk, but it's easier than you think and there's loads of signposts.

You could even keep posting on this thread if it will help your nerves while you're doing the journey and finding your way around, I'm sure lots of people here will be happy to keep encouraging you.

TinselAngel · 30/08/2018 16:17

I went to see Wicked in the West End on my own a few weeks ago (I was in London for Work and had a free evening). It's really easy to find from the Tube.

I'm a country bumpkin but always think London is probably the easiest city to navigate- the tube is so straight forward- particularly these days when you can get an app on your phone.

You should definitely still go, you'll have a great time and it's a brilliant show.

twilightcafe · 30/08/2018 16:19

You won't even need to change Tube trains. Bayswater to Victoria is on the Circle line and takes 12 minutes, according to the Transport for London website.
