We have booked and paid to go to London for a concert tomorrow night.
Leaving at 6.30 pm tonight
She rang a hour ago saying she was ill with sickness bug and can't go.
It's too late to find anyone else to go.
So I'm loosing out on £90 train
£150 hotel and £79 concert ticket :-(
Do I go alone?
I know I won't enjoy it alone tho
Tomorrow was meant to be shopping then concert ..coming home on Saturday
Gutted

Go alone! You’ll be so wrapped up in the show you won’t be chatting to your friends during it, so I don’t think you’ll miss her that much.

Do you know LONDON well? Let us know if you need any recommendations on things to do.

I love doing London alone and have two trips planned in September, all by myself!

pippy002 · 30/08/2018 15:56

I think that's why I'm scared a bit as it's London
Tubes etc !! Getting back to hotel late at night.

Definitely go alone! I can understand your reluctance - I would have been the same as you when I was younger - now I’ve given up caring what others think and would just go!

I know it wasn’t what you were planning for the weekend, and it is disappointing to not have your friend with you to share the fun, but try and put the original plans out of your head and view the weekend through fresh eyes. View it as a chance to escape for a weekend and do whatever YOU want without having to even think about anyone else’s needs or preferences. Enjoy the “me” time. (For want of a better cliché!)

You can arrange something different with your friend another time - detach from that for now and just enjoy this weekend for what it (now) is.

almightygirl · 30/08/2018 15:56

It’s a shame about your friend but I would definitely go!! Enjoy the hotel, visit all the places in London you want to go to, treat yourself!

pippy002 · 30/08/2018 15:56

Last time I was in London was 2004!!

YABU unless you thing she is making the story up just to get out of going.
Go on your own and have a good time.

legoqueen · 30/08/2018 15:56

Go for sure - theatre on your own is lovely - call box office to see if they can re-sell the ticket for you. Poor friend - it's such a fun show!

pippy002 · 30/08/2018 15:57

I'm mid 30s now so should have more get up and go in me!!

Nesssie · 30/08/2018 15:57

A concert I wouldn't personally go alone, but a show with reserved seats? Definitely go! It'll be dark and everyone will be watching the stage, not you.
At least go to London and if you don't feel like going to the show, just make the most of a hotel room to yourself! Use all the bubble bath and lay in bed watching tv all day.

CottonSock · 30/08/2018 15:57

I once had to travel to Europe alone as my sister lost her passport. Not ideal but I had fun.

pippy002 · 30/08/2018 15:58

She's deffo telling the truth she was really excited
I'm not even annoyed at her really just annoyed at the universe for constantly crapping on me ha ha

Smellyrose · 30/08/2018 15:58

Just saw your post about anxiety - i’m Sure we can get a nice easy itinerary for you!

Where (in general) are you staying? If you’re worried about the tube can you afford to get taxis?

OneStepSideways · 30/08/2018 15:58

So horribly disappointing! I wouldn't go either, I don't like staying in hotels or navigating alone.

But on the bright side, at least she came down with it before you left! Imagine if it had started on the train or in the hotel and you'd caught it too!)

PrimalLass · 30/08/2018 15:58

Go. You might be able to sell her ticket. Try the usual sites.

SissySpacekAteMyHamster · 30/08/2018 15:58

I've seen Wicked. Very good and you'll be fine on your own. I'd be a bit nervous at a concert on my own but a theatre isn't so scary.

amusedbush · 30/08/2018 15:58

I wouldn't go to a gig by myself but the theatre? Absolutely! It sounds like a wonderful break to do alone.

lalalonglegs · 30/08/2018 15:59

I'm a Londoner - despite all the shrill headlines, it's a really safe city and, contrary to what you are told, people will help you with directions and so on. I'm pretty sure that Wicked is at a theatre close to Victoria station which means that, given the bus and tube routes through Victoria, you will find it super-easy to find and to get back to the hotel from.

Think how proud you will feel of yourself after you have been and enjoyed yourself.

almightygirl · 30/08/2018 15:59

Just seen your update. I live in London and it’s fine, even late at night. I understand - I was nervous when I first moved here but honestly, you’ll be ok!

pippy002 · 30/08/2018 16:00

I'm staying at Henry v11 hotel
Leinster gardens (near Queensway tube and Bayswater tube.

OP posts:
Pangur2 · 30/08/2018 16:00

Wicked is directly outside one of the Victoria train station exits so you won't get lost. What station (train or tube) is your hotel near?

BlueNeighbourhood · 30/08/2018 16:00

I've wandered around London on my own plenty of times whilst waiting for DP to finish work and come see me and it's so much fun. Remember there are lots of people like you in the same position and just go for the enjoyment and to capture some of the atmosphere, especially in places like Piccadilly Circus.

I've been to a play on my own and thoroughly enjoyed it, nobody asking me questions all the way through! I stay in hotels in London often on my own for work and have no trouble getting the tube to places - where you'll be visiting will only be a few stations apart.

Get yourself there and shopping in Harrods and Selfridges, or explore the markets and get an experience of real London. I promise, it's nowhere near as bad as is made out on tv and I'm a Northerner!

Havaina · 30/08/2018 16:00

I promise no one in the theatre will notice that you are on your own. You'll be sat next to someone!

And the hotel are used to solo travellers.

You'll be absolutely fine.

Make sure you get your friend's ticket and train money and half the cost of hotel room if you were sharing.

MaMaMaMySharona · 30/08/2018 16:01

I would absolutely go on my own and I am not one for doing things on my own usually. I saw Wicked earlier this year and thought it was brilliant, plus no one will even notice you're on your own as it will be packed!

It is a right pain that this has happened and I completely understand your unease at doing it, but I completely agree with other posters - a fabulous opportunity to have some fun and be a tourist.

Wicked is right next to Victoria Station and you will be leaving with hundreds of other people when the show ends - how far do you have to travel to your hotel?

AlexanderHamilton · 30/08/2018 16:01

Wicked? I'll come (wish I could but I've seen it, its great and you shoudl definately go alone.

She can;t travel and go in a theatre with a sickness bug.

The tube at night is really easy. London is buzzing at theatre finish time. The Apollo Victoria is right across the road from Victoria rail/tube station, couldn't be easier. I can reccomend a really nice Italian restaurant called Il Posto right opposite.

Is your hotel in Central London or the outskirts?

waterrat · 30/08/2018 16:01

It will be very busy and brightly lit everywhere you go - honestly - the tube will be heaving with people - you won't feel scared!
