Car parking costs at work out of control

Notmorewashing · 29/08/2018 20:20

Parking at work now costs us £3.10 per day. If we park in free public carpark it adds 45mins to journey time. Would you just pay up to save a bit more time on commute and kids dinner rush Hell??

OP posts:

I'd definitely pay £3.10 to shorten my commute by 45 mins

kaytee87 · 29/08/2018 20:33

But it's the petrol that's high, not the parking.

How many miles are you commuting? Could you do car share? Could you use public transport? Could you cycle?

NapQueen · 29/08/2018 20:33

Id pay the parking and take the extra time.

MissCharleyP · 29/08/2018 20:33

I work at an airport. I park (for free) and travel in by public transport. It does add about half an hour to either end of my day though. My colleague parked in the terminal car park the other day and it was £40. I’d snatch anyone’s hand off for £3.10 to save some time.

purplemunkey · 29/08/2018 20:34

Sounds cheap to me. I've just moved out of London where my daily travel/oyster cost was £12.50. I drive to work now and luckily park nearby for free but I'd happily pay £3.10 to park on site.

Yura · 29/08/2018 20:35

Depends where you are! I pay £20 a day for my train ticket, and i’m kind of average (central London office)

Holidayshopping · 29/08/2018 20:35

DH pays £17.50 a day to commute to work-I’d suck it up tbh. I certainly wouldn’t want to add 45 minutes to my journey.

Iltavilli · 29/08/2018 20:38

I pay £19 a day on public transport, reduced to £14 if I plan in advance and split my ticket (train). Work offer no parking at all, subsidised or otherwise. Not on a huge salary either - a little over £30k.

SilverHairedCat · 29/08/2018 20:38

So perhaps the parking costs aren't the problem, but the petrol costs are?

How long is your commute? Why are the petrol costs so high? Do you drive a car with poor MPG? Would you consider switching to two wheels?

I use my motorbike a lot more for commuting these days - I don't pay for the toll bridge, parking is free in city car parks and the petrol costs are significantly lower than the car.

londonrach · 29/08/2018 20:41

Wow thats cheap. Dh pays £6 per day work car park. I work nhs and its £8 per day. Wish i had parking that cheap.

c3pu · 29/08/2018 20:42

Get a fold up bike to put in the boot of your car, might be able to reduce the 45 minutes extra?

hidinginthenightgarden · 29/08/2018 20:43

I think people are being unfair saying it is cheap. For you maybe but obviously not OP. It will add up to over £3k for over a year. If you are only earning 20k a year that is a massive chunk!

AutoFilled · 29/08/2018 20:43

£3.10 sounds really cheap. We can claim expenses on parking, but it's over £8 a day, but I always leave around 3pm. I think it's over £10 for a full day.

shallen · 29/08/2018 20:44

Ours is anywhere from £7 per day to £14 depending on where you park, or to find street parking I have to walk almost a mile from where I park to my office! Absolute piss take.

ElainaElephant · 29/08/2018 20:44

Could you car share from the public car park?

oldsockeater · 29/08/2018 20:47

3 pounds is cheap. Cycle from the free parking? 45 min walk will take 10 mins to cycle.
If you are paying 7 for fuel you must be driving about 35 miles each way. So cycling all the way is not feasible. But could you use folding bike plus train? I doubt it would work out cheaper though.

Bestseller · 29/08/2018 20:47

Hiding, it's about £700pa assuming 5 days a week and a standard holiday allowance. Significant amount but it is cheap compared to what most people who work in a city/town centre have to pay. People here rent their driveways to people who work in the high street and can get up to £120 per month.

IAmAllAstonishment · 29/08/2018 20:47

Wow- no offence but everyone at my office would kill for £3.10 parking. WITH staff discount ours is £7.50 a day!

PlatypusPie · 29/08/2018 20:48

Out of control - I thought £3.10 was a typo ! That’s not expensive for 45 minutes of convenience especially as you must have a long drive to cost £7 in petrol.

DeadBod · 29/08/2018 20:49

Nothing to add but crikey, these travel costs are expensive Shock

TheMatteEffect · 29/08/2018 20:50

3.10 for contributing to global warming is insanely cheap.

Get a bike?

kaytee87 · 29/08/2018 20:51

Parking isn't charged on a percentage or your wage though and it is cheap compared to what a lot of people say.

Knittedfairies · 29/08/2018 20:51

I think £3.10 for a day’s parking is reasonable, but £7 for fuel isn’t!

LakieLady · 29/08/2018 20:52

To park anywhere near my doctor's it's £3 an hour, and that's in a small Sussex town.

£3.10 a day sounds like a bargain to me, although I get free parking at work because I'm an essential car user. If I wasn't, I'd be paying at least £2 pd AND having a minimum 10 minute walk to the office.

kaytee87 · 29/08/2018 20:53

£3.10 per working day doesn't add up to anywhere near £3k per year Confused
